IBM PC, IntelliStation, ValuePoint - How to run CHKDSK in DOS/Windows

Applicable to: World-Wide

How to run checkdisk in DOS/Windows 3.1, 3.11:

1. If you are in Windows, exit completely (do not go to an MS-DOS prompt.) Click on "File", "Exit". You should get a prompt "This will end your Windows session"; click on "OK". This should take you to a C:\ prompt.

or:

If you are running DOS 6.0 or above, boot the computer from the hard drive; when you see "Starting PC DOS" or "Starting MS-DOS", hit F5. You will get a message telling you that this will bypass your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.

2. Type "chkdsk" and press enter. If you have more than one drive, you may check each drive by typing "chkdsk c:", "chkdsk d:" and so on.

NOTE: If you wish to have CHKDSK repair lost allocation units on the hard drive, type "chkdsk/f". The /f switch relays the command to fix errors that are found. If you use this switch, you will get an option to save lost allocation units if any are found. There is usually no need to save these as files. If you are running Microsoft DOS you will also receive an option to verify running SCANDISK instead of CHKDSK. The CHKDSK screen should resemble the figure below:

If CHKDSK finds a large number (more than 1000) bad sectors, this could indicate a hardware problem. SCANDISK is a more thorough testing procedure than CHKDSK but takes longer to perform.
