Applicable to: World-Wide
How to run checkdisk in OS/2 Warp 3:
Important note: You must boot from diskette in order for the process to work correctly.
From the Warp Utility Diskettes:
Note: If you do not have the three utility diskettes, they may be obtained in any of the following ways:
From an OS/2 desktop, double-click on OS/2 System, System Setup, Create Utility Diskettes. Double-click the icon and follow the instructions from there to create the three utility diskettes.
OR
Click on the following links to obtain the utility diskette images:
Warput01.exe
Warput02.exe
Warput03.exe
Running the executable files will will create each of the three diskettes. Have three blank diskettes available.
OR
You can call the IBM HelpCenter and order the diskettes to be made. There will be a charge for handling and administrative costs.
To run CHKDSK from the Warp Utility diskettes:
1. Boot on Warp Utilty Diskette 1 and insert Diskette 2 when prompted. This will boot you to an [A:\] prompt.
2. Insert Diskette #3 and at the [A:\] prompt type "chkdsk c:". If you have more than one drive, you may check each drive by typing "chkdsk c:", "chkdsk d:", and so on.
3. In order to repair any errors, you must use the /f, or "fix" switch. The /f switch relays the command to also fix errors that are found. If you use this switch, you will get an option to save lost allocation units if any are found. There is usually no need to save these as files. The syntax will be "chkdsk/f c:".
To run CHKDSK from the Warp Installation Diskettes:
1. Boot on the Warp installation diskette.
2. When prompted, insert Diskette #1. This will bring you to a screen titled "Installing Operating System/2" with choices for Easy and Advanced Installation.
3. Do not choose either one. Press the F3 key for Command Prompt. This will bring you to an [A:\] prompt.
Do step 4 only if you installed Warp from CD-ROM. If you installed from diskette, skip to step 5.
4. You will need a blank diskette. Put the diskette in the diskette drive. You will then copy a file from your CD-ROM drive. In this example, the CD_ROM drive is drive d: so you would type "copy d:\os2image\disk_2\chkdsk.com a:" This will copy the chkdsk command to the diskette. If your hard drive is formatted HPFS, you will also need to copy UHPFS.DLL. Type "copy d:\os2image\disk_2\uhpfs.dll a:". You can use this diskette for diskette #3 in the next step.
5. Insert Diskette #3 and at the [A:\] prompt type "chkdsk c:". If you have more than one drive, you may check each drive by typing "chkdsk c:", "chkdsk d:", and so on.
In order to repair any errors, you must use the /f, or "fix" switch. The /f switch relays the command to also fix errors that are found. If you use this switch, you will get an option to save lost allocation units if any are found. There is usually no need to save these as files. The syntax will be "chkdsk/f c:".
