IBM IntelliStation/IBM PC - Restoring the Master Boot Record in OS/2 Warp 3.0

Applicable to: World-Wide

How to restore MBR and boot files in OS/2 Warp 3:
You will need the set of three utility diskettes that should be made from a working system. You can also use the Warp installation diskettes if you have them (see instructions for restoring using the Installation Diskettes, below.)

If you do not have the three utility diskettes, they may be obtained in any of the following ways:

1. From an OS/2 desktop, Double-Click on OS/2 System, System Setup, Create Utility Diskettes. Double-Click the icon and follow the instructions from there to create the three utility diskettes.

2. Click on each of the following links to obtain the utility disk image files:

Warput01.exe
Warput02.exe
Warput03.exe

Running the executable files will create each of the three diskettes. Have 3 blank diskettes available.

3. You can call the IBM HelpCenter and order the diskettes to be made. There will be a charge for handling and administrative costs.

To Restore Master Boot Record and Boot Files in OS/2 Warp 3 using the Utility Diskettes:

1. Boot with Utility Diskette #1.

2. When prompted, insert Utility Diskette #2. This will boot you to an [a:\] prompt.

3. To restore the Master Boot Record: insert Utility Disk #3, and at the [a:\] prompt, type "Fdisk /newmbr" and press the "enter" key.

4. When the process has completed, you will see a message, "The new MBR has successfully been written."

5. To restore boot files in OS/2: Insert Utility Diskette #3. At the [a:] prompt type "sysinstx c:" and press the "enter" key.

6. When the process has completed, you will see a message, "The type of file system for the disk is FAT. The system files have been transferred." (If you have formatted HPFS, the message will indicate this.)

7. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the system.

To Restore Master Boot Record and Boot Files in OS/2 Warp 3 using the Installation Diskettes:

1. Boot with the Installation Diskette.

2. When prompted, insert Diskette #1. This will bring you to a screen titled "Installing Operating System/2" with choices for Easy and Advanced Installation.

3. Do not choose either one. Hit the F3 key for Command Prompt. This will bring you to an [a:\] prompt.

4. To restore the Master Boot Record: insert Diskette #1, and at the [a:\] prompt, type "Fdisk /newmbr" and press the "enter" key.

4. When the process has completed, you will see a message, "The new MBR has successfully been written."

5. To restore boot files in OS/2: Insert the Installation Diskette. At the [a:] prompt type "sysinstx c:" and press the "enter" key.

6. When the process has completed, you will see a message, "The type of file system for the disk is FAT. The system files have been transferred." (If you have formatted HPFS, the message will indicate this.)
