TP General - Changing the screen resolution and refresh rates in Windows 95/98

Applicable to: World-Wide

To change the resolution that Windows 95/98 is running in follow the procedure outlined below. Please note that these steps were done using Windows 95 OSR2. The instructions will vary slightly depending on which version of Windows 95 you are currently running at or if you are running Windows 98.

1. Find a blank area on your desktop and click on it with your right mouse button.
2. Select Properties. This launches the Windows 95 Display Properties window.

3. Drag the Desktop Area bar (1) to the right until the desired resolution shows.
4. Select Apply.

To change the refresh rate select (2) Advanced and you will see the following (information such as adapter type, driver information etc. may be different depending on the model ThinkPad you are using):

Note: Depending on which Monitor you have selected you may only have Adapter default and Optimal as a choice for refresh rate. If you do then you must make another Monitor selection. If your required refresh rate is available then Highlight that choice and select OK. If your monitor selection allows you to choose the desired refresh rate proceed to step 8. If not proceed to the next step.

5. If you need to change Monitor setting then select the Monitor tap and select Change.

Note: you may need to experiment with several choices to find a Monitor setting that will allow you to set the desired resolution and refresh rate.

6. Select OK and you then be placed back at the Display property screen.
7. Select OK once more.
8. At the Compatibility Warning window select the Apply the settings without restarting radio button, then select OK, then Yes.

Note that you must select Yes or No within 10 seconds or Windows will automatically change the settings back to the original resolution (1024 x 768).

Note that if the systems begins to flicker or colors change abnormally the system must be rebooted..

9. Select OK at the Display Properties window.
