IBM IntelliStation/IBM PC - What is DHCP, RIPL?

Applicable to: World-Wide

This document provides defintions of two terms used in Lan Client Control Manager:

DHCP:

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) in Lan Client Control Manager is used to allow clients to be maintained by a server running LCCM from a different LAN segment or over internal routers. LCCM uses a NetBIOS over TCP/IP scheme to allow the utility to work over a segmented network.

RIPL:

RIPL is a remote station protocol that sends a packet to the network that is picked up by a server. The server then sends the client an image that then becomes the client's operating system. In LCCM, RIPL is used to allow LCCM to provide maintenance to a client by the client sending this RIPL packet.

RIPL's limitation is that it cannot route to other networks. It must stay on the same LAN.
