IBM IntelliStation/IBM PC - Real mode NDIS drivers do not load in Windows 95/98

Applicable to: World-Wide

PROBLEM:
Real Mode NDIS drivers do not load when DOS is started from the Start menu in Windows 95 or Windows 98

PERMANENT SOLUTION:
(This assumes that NDIS drivers are not specified in either the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file associated with the Exit To Dos.PIF file or its equivalent.)

  1. Verify that the DOS NDIS driver is copied to the system directory, usually C:\Windows. (Check your network adapter card documentation for information about the DOS NDIS driver.)
  2. Check the Netcard key in the Registry and verify that its value is the DOS NDIS driver file name. The path to the Netcard key is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Network \Real Mode Net \ Netcard

To edit the value of the Netcard key, double click it and, in the box that appears, type in the name of the DOS NDIS driver. Please use proper precautions when editing the Registry!

EXPLANATION:
When starting DOS from Windows 95 or Windows 98, the system checks the Netcard key in the Registry for the DOS NDIS driver.
