Achiever PC 3000 - Re-installing the original software

Question:
How do I re-install the original software on my PC 3000?

Answer:
Follow the steps below.

*** ATTENTION ***
If you follow the steps below, you will lose all your data and program files. The hard drive will no longer contain any personal information. If you have important files you wish to keep, please save them before going any further.

For this operation you will need:

* The windows 95 start-up disk
* The windows 95 CD
* The 6 multimedia modem installations disks

A. Installing Windows 95

  1. Insert the Windows 95 start-up disk into the A drive and then start the computer.
  2. At the A:\> prompt insert the Windows 95 CD.
  3. Type the word "FDISK" and press Enter.
  4. Choose "Option 3" and press Enter.
  5. Choose "Option 1" and press Enter.
  6. When you see the warning just press the Enter key.
  7. FDISK will then ask you for the volume label. The volume label is the word listed under the title "VOLUME LABEL" onscreen.
  8. Type the volume label and then press Enter.
  9. When it asks you if you are sure, press "Y" and then press Enter.
  10. Press the "Esc" key to continue.
  11. Choose "Option 1" and press Enter.
  12. From the second menu choose "Option 1" and again press Enter.
  13. When it asks you if you wish to use the maximum available space answer "YES" and press Enter.
  14. Now, restart the computer.
  15. At the A:\> prompt type "FORMAT C:" and press Enter. Note: Omit the " " marks when you type this in.
  16. When asked for a volume label just press Enter.
  17. At the A:\> prompt type "D:" and press Enter.
  18. At the D:\> prompt type "SETUP" and press Enter.
  19. Press the Enter key to continue.
  20. At this point the mouse will work and you can click on "Continue".
  21. Click on "YES" to accept the software agreement.
  22. Click on "NEXT" to start collecting information about the hardware installed in your computer.
  23. Click on "NEXT" to install Windows 95 into the default directory.
  24. Click on "NEXT" for a typical installation.
  25. Enter the software registration number found on the cover page of your Windows 95 guide and click on "NEXT".
  26. Enter your name and company (company optional), then click on "NEXT ".
  27. Click on "NEXT", windows will then analyse your computer for the installed options.
  28. Click "NEXT" to install the most common components.
  29. Click on "NO I DO NOT WANT A START-UP DISK", then click on "NEXT ".
  30. Click on "NEXT" to start copying the files to your hard drive.
  31. Remove the start-up disk from the A:\ drive.
  32. Click on "FINISH" to restart the computer.
  33. Click on "OK" when prompted to insert the Windows 95 CD.
  34. Click on "CANCEL" to continue.
  35. Click on the down arrow in the date and time properties to select the appropriate time zone.
  36. Click on "CLOSE" , then click on "NEXT".
  37. Click on "CANCEL" in the ADD PRINTER WIZARD. You will install your printer with the specific disks it came with.
  38. Click on "OK" to restart the computer.

B. Installing the sound card.

  1. Insert the diskette labelled, "Multimedia Modem Windows disk 1" into the floppy drive.
  2. Click on "Start", choose "Settings" and select "Control Panel".
  3. Select "ADD/Remove Programs".
  4. Select "Install".
  5. Click on "NEXT".
  6. Click on "FINISH".
  7. At the installation window run the complete installation.
  8. When asked for the various disks, insert them accordingly.
  9. When prompted to restart the computer, do not do so, simply exit the installation
  10. Click on "Start", choose "Shutdown", and select "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode". Click on "Yes". Make sure to remove the disk from the floppy drive.
  11. At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt, type "CD.." and press Enter.
  12. Type "CD DSP2\SOLO" and press Enter.
  13. Type "Config" and press Enter.
  14. The first message you will see is just to ensure that the board is installed. Press Enter to accept.
  15. Use the down arrow to highlight "Setup" and press Enter.
  16. Make sure the following values are displayed:

  1. DSP BASE I/O 0XCE30
    DSP DMA 7
    DSP IRQ 10
    SB BASE I/O 0X220
    SB DMA 1
    SB IRQ 7
    MIDI IRQ 9
    MIDI BASE I/O 0X330
    COM PORT 3
    COM IRQ 5
    CD-ROM IRQ NONE
    CD-ROM BASE I/O 0X0 (OR DISABLED)
    JOYSTICK ENABLED


    1. If anything else is displayed, use the down arrow key to select the item you need to change. Press Enter to open the list of choices. Select the correct setting and press Enter to change the value.
    2. Once this has been completed, use the down arrow key to highlight "OK" and press Enter to accept.
    3. Move down and highlight "TEST" and press Enter. It should then run 6 tests and pass them all.
    4. When the testing stops, press Enter again.
    5. Then, with the down arrow, move to highlight "EXIT" and press Enter.
    6. Press Enter to update the config.sys and other files.
    7. Press Enter again to exit the program.
    8. Once back at the C:\DSP2\SOLO> prompt, restart the computer.
    9. You will now have sound.
    10. C. Installing the modem.
    11. Once back in Windows click on "Start", choose "Programs" and select "Multimedia modem".
    12. Click on "MWAVE MODEM".
    13. At this point you will have a small window with 2 lights in green, the 2 lights in green should be MR and HS.
    14. Leave this window on the screen.
    15. Then click on "Start", choose "Settings" and select "Control Panel".
    16. Double click on the "Add New Hardware" icon.
    17. Click on "Next" at the first window, the second window and at the third window.
    18. Allow the autodetection process to find the hardware.
    19. When it has finished, click on the Details button and the hardware installed should be a "communication port".
    20. Click on "Finish".
    21. You will now be back at the Control Panel. Double click on the "Add New Hardware" icon again.
    22. Click on Next at the first window, Next at the second window and Next at the third window
    23. When finished you should get the Details button again. Click on it and you should see "28.8 Mwave Data Fax".
    24. Click on "Finish" and then click on "Next".
    25. Close the Control Panel to complete the installation.

    D. Installing the CD ROM in MS-DOS.

    1. Click on "Start" and select "Run". At the command line type "SYSEDIT" and click on OK.
    2. You will then see several files. The first one we need to edit is the Autoexec.bat file. We must add in the following line:

    1. DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /M:12 /L:D


      1. Once the line has been added close that window.
      2. When windows asks if you want to save the changes, answer "YES".
      3. You will then see the Config.sys file. Find a free line and add in the following:
      4. C:\DEV\OAKV111.SYS /D:MSCD001 /N:1


        1. Once the line has been added, close the config.sys file.
        2. Again it will ask you if you want to save the changes. Answer "YES".
        3. Close all the other files until you get back the Windows desktop.
        4. Click on "Start", select "Programs" and choose "MS-DOS prompt".
        5. At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt, type "CD.." then press Enter.
        6. You will then be at the C:\> prompt. Type in "MD DEV" then press Enter.
        7. Insert the Windows 95 Start-up disk.
        8. Type in "A:" and press Enter.
        9. Type "CD AMBRA" and press Enter.
        10. Type "COPY *.* C:\DEV" and press Enter.
        11. Type "Exit" and press Enter.
        12. Remove the Start-up disk.
        13. Click on "Start", select "Shutdown", and choose "Restart the Computer" to complete the installation.
