PS/1 - Video RAM Upgrades

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
PS/1 486 models come with 512K of video RAM and are upgradeable to 1MB. (Other models are either 512K non-upgradeable or 1MB non-upgradeable).

For systems with the TSENG ET-4000 video chip, IBM does not supply an upgrade kit, but there is a solution you would have to install on your own. To upgrade the video RAM on eligible systems, you need FOUR 20-pin 256Kb X 4 video RAM chips. These video RAM chips are not IBM proprietary, and you should be able to find them at many computer dealers.

The following Texas Instrument video RAM chips have been found to be compatible with these IBM PS/1 486 Computers. However, we (IBM) have not received an official letter from the manufacturer verifying that the hardware has been tested. Texas Instrument Reference Number:
TMS44C 256-80N

HEP 2062 IN
These video RAM chips will give you 256 colors up to 1024x768 with applications that support this resolution.

For systems that include a Cirrus Logic 542x video chipset with 512 KB of video memory and are upgradeable, a 40-pin (zig-zag inline package (ZIP) 80 nanoseconds DRAM module can be added to bring the video memory up to 1MB. This chip will give you 16 colors up to 1280x1024 with applications that support this resolution.
