Aptiva - Installing drivers for IBM 10/100 EtherJet PCI Adapter in Windows 98

Applicable to: World-Wide

Most IBM Aptiva systems which come with a Windows 98 preload are also preloaded with the latest driver, at the time, for the IBM 10/100 EtherJet PCI Adapter. So, the adapter should be automatically detected and installed without any need for the user to do anything.
If you wish to install a more recent driver from a new Drivers diskette, do the following:

1. Obtain the most recent set of drivers for the IBM 10/100 EtherJet PCI Adapter from http://www.networking.ibm.com/support. Once you have downloaded the drivers extract each file to diskette.

2. Let the system detect and install the adapter with the driver that comes with the preload package.

3. Go to Control Panel, then System, then Device Manager. Select IBM 10/100 EtherJet PCI Adapter in Network Adapters. Click on Properties of IBM 10/100 EtherJet PCI Adapter and choose Drivers Update. Have the Drivers diskette in drive A: and follow the Update path to complete the driver update process. The Update will detect the new NETIBMFE.INF and then install the new IBMFENT.SY_ driver. Note that the date shown on the Drivers window of the Adapter Properties is the date of the NETIBMFE.INF, not the date of the driver itself.

Manually Adding an Adapter in Win 98

====================================

If the New Hardware Found dialog box does not appear at startup and you cannot connect to the network, check the Device Manager list to see if the new adapter is present. If it is not, follow these steps:

1. From the Control Panel, double-click the System icon.

2. Click the Device Manager tab.

3. Double-click Other Devices (question mark icon) in the list area.

4. Double-click a PCI Ethernet Controller.

5. Click the Driver tab, then click Change Driver.

6. Select Network Adapters and click OK.

7. Click Have Disk. Insert the 10/100 EtherJet PCI Adapter disk and click OK.

8. Follow any prompts for Windows 98 installation disks and restart when prompted.

IMPORTANT: You must reboot after installing each adapter port.

To install IBMFESet software (recommended), read the section "Install IBMFESet Software" in your Install Guide.

Hints and Tips

==============

If your system contains a multiport adapter and you install Windows 98, Windows 98 may detect the ports of the adapter as 82557-based adapters. If you try to upgrade the drivers for these adapters through the Update Drivers function of the Device Manager, the adapter may no longer function after rebooting.

To resolve this problem:

1. Double-click on the System icon in the Control Panel.

2. Click the Device Manager tab.

3. Highlight each port of the multiport adapter and click Remove.

4. Shut down Windows 98, turn off the computer and unplug its power cord.

5. Remove the multiport adapter card.

6. Plug in the power cord and start Windows 98.

7. Shut down Windows 98, turn off the computer and unplug its power cord.

8. Reinstall the multiport adapter card, plug in the power cord and start Windows 98. The Windows 98 OS should detect the hardware, prompting you for the drivers disk.

IMPORTANT: You must reboot after installing each adapter port.
