Ambra - Re-installing the original software systems with the Boca Research Sound adapter

Question:
How do I restore all the software on my Ambra with a Boca Research Sound adapter?

Answer:
Follow the steps below.

*** ATTENTION ***
If you follow the steps below, you will lose all your data and program files. The hard drive will no longer contain any personal information. If you have important files you wish to keep, please save them before going any further.

To do the operation, you will need the following disks:

The Windows 95 start-up disk
The Windows 95 CD
The Windows 95 Certificate of Authenticity
The Windows 95 driver diskette

Here are the steps to reload the software.

  1. Insert the Windows 95 start-up disk and start the machine.
  2. When you see the A:\> prompt insert the Windows 95 CD.
  3. At the prompt type: FORMAT C:/U and press enter.
  4. When the format is done it will ask for a volume label. Press the ENTER key for no volume label.
  5. Now type D: or the appropriate letter for your CD-ROM drive and press ENTER.
  6. Then type SETUP and press Enter. This will start the Windows 95 installation.
  7. It will ask you to perform a routine check on the system. Press ENTER to accept.
  8. On the next window click the NEXT button.
  9. Click YES to accept the license agreement.
  10. Again, click on NEXT.
  11. Accept the directory chosen by clicking on NEXT.
  12. Select the Typical Installation and click NEXT.
  13. Windows will then ask you for the Product Identification Number, this is on the top of the bar-code on the green certificate of authenticity, which is with the Windows 95 manual. Once you have entered the number click on NEXT.
  14. Windows will then ask you to enter your name. Do so and click on NEXT.
  15. From the resulting windows click on NEXT.
  16. At the next window click on NEXT.
  17. Windows will then ask you what you want to install. Choose INSTALL THE MOST COMMON COMPONENTS and click on NEXT.
  18. It will then ask you to create a start-up disk, answer NO and then click on NEXT.
  19. At the next window, click on NEXT.
  20. Windows will now want to finish the set-up, so remove the Windows 95 start-up disk and click on FINISH.
  21. When Windows starts select the appropriate time zone and press ENTER.
  22. Windows will then ask you to install your printer. Click on CANCEL.
  23. When done Windows will ask you to restart. Click on OK to restart.

Now for the sound card.

  1. Insert the Windows 95 driver disk into drive A.
  2. Click on Start, Settings, then on Control Panel.
  3. Click on Add New Hardware.
  4. When asked, 'Do you want Windows to search for your new hardware?', click on NO.
  5. Select Multifunction Adapters.
  6. Click on NEXT.
  7. Select Have Disk then on OK.
  8. Select Boca Research Sound Expression 14.4 SE1440.
  9. Click on NEXT.
  10. Click on FINISH.
  11. Remove the Windows 95 driver disk.
  12. When asked, 'Do you want to restart your Computer now?', click on YES.

Now for the modem.

  1. After the machine has reboot, insert the Windows 95 driver disk into drive A.
  2. Click on Start, Settings and Control Panel.
  3. Click on Add New Hardware.
  4. When asked 'Do you want Windows to search for your new hardware?', click on No.
  5. Select Modem.
  6. Click on NEXT.
  7. Click Don't Detect My Modem, then click on Next.
  8. Click on NEXT.
  9. Select Have Disk then OK.
  10. Select Boca Research Sound Expression 14.4 SE1440.
  11. Click on NEXT.
  12. Select COM4.
  13. Click on NEXT.
  14. Click on FINISH.

Lastly, the CD-ROM drivers.

  1. Insert the Windows 95 start-up disk.
  2. Click on Start, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt.
  3. At C:\WINDOWS\> prompt, type "CD\" and press Enter.
  4. At C:\> type "MD DEV" and press Enter.
  5. Now at the C:\> prompt type "CD DEV" and press Enter.
  6. At C:\DEV\> type "COPY A:\AMBRA\OAKV111.SYS C:\DEV."

Now, edit the autoexec.bat and config.sys files.

A. Config.sys

  1. Click on Start, Programs then select MS-DOS Prompt.
  2. At C:\WINDOWS\> type "CD\" and press ENTER.
  3. At C:\> type "EDIT CONFIG.SYS" and press ENTER.
  4. Make sure the following lines are there, if not add them.

  1. DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
    DEVICE=C:\SE1440\CSACDMOD1.EXE
    DEVICEHIGH=C:\DEV\OAKV111.SYS /D:MSCD001
    DOS=HIGH,UMB


    1. Press the ALT-F keys (F for File) then press the X key to exit. Now press Enter on the YES to SAVE and Exit screen.
    2. B. Autoexec.bat
    3. Type EDIT autoexec.bat and press ENTER.
    4. Make sure that the following lines are there, if not add them in..

      SET BLASTER= A220 I5 D1
      PATH= C:\SE1440;C:\;C:\WINDOWS;C:\QTW\BIN\;
      SET LIB=C:\QTW\LIB;
      SET INCLUDE=C:\QTW\INC;
      C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /L:D /M:12


      1. Press the ALT-F keys (F for File) then press the X key to exit. Now press Enter on the YES to SAVE and Exit screen.
      2. Type EXIT and press Enter to return to Windows.
      3. Click on Start, Shutdown and select Restart the Computer and click on YES. When Windows restarts, you are done.
