Suspend/Resume

ThinkPad 755CE/CD/CX/CV/CDV

Consideration of Suspend/Resume on the ThinkPad
The Suspend/Resume feature is supported on most ThinkPad models under Windows NT once you install the ThinkPad Utility or power management driver.

However, if the system is connected to the docking station or if some PC Cards are inserted in the PCMCIA slot, the suspend operation will set the system to go into STANDBY mode when the system is used with AC mode operation. This is to avoid problems such as communication link breaks or failures when the system is operational with the network environment.

ThinkPad Features for 345C and 370C
This section applies only for ThinkPad 345C and 370C since the power management feature is not supported.

Fuel Gauge program suspend icon on 345C and 370C
On the fuel gauge screen, clicking the "suspend icon" must not be used to avoid an erroneous situation in Windows NT 3.51.
Setting the system to go into suspend mode will cause erroneous situations on Windows NT such as delay of time of day clock during suspend and erroneous power down for certain devices after resuming the system.

If you use a sound device, PCMCIA devices, and timer device for example, suspending the system will not restore the device context after resume.

There is a "hibernation" icon on the same menu but using the hibernation function is NOT recommended because of the same reasons as suspend.

Suspend/Resume options at power mode setting
If you set "Will not suspend even if LCD is closed" as an option at the Suspend/Resume options on the power mode icon menu, this option is used in the following manner in a Windows NT environment:

This option allows not only inhibiting the suspend operation if the LCD is closed, but also inhibits ANY suspend condition such as the Fn+F4 suspend key, suspend selection at battery the gauge icon menu, automatic suspend with suspend timer and low battery suspend.

To set this mode to be enabled, click this option on the menu and "save" it. Then shutdown and restart NT. When you boot NT, this mode becomes active.

WARNING:
YOU MUST MANUALLY SHUTDOWN THE SYSTEM WHEN LOW A BATTERY CONDITION OCCURS. THE SYSTEM WILL NOT GO INTO SUSPEND AUTOMATICALLY AT LOW POWER BATTERY.

Inhibiting the suspend operation
You can inhibit the automatic timer suspend operation using the "Power" mode menu on ThinkPad Features. Unless you specify the "Will not suspend even if LCD is closed" option at the suspend/resume option, it is required at least to set the following power mode in order to avoid going to suspend:

1. Set the "Power Mode" to "Customized"
2. Set the "Suspend time" to "0" (disables suspend timer)
3. Save the above option in the Power Mode menu.
4. Click "Fuel gauge" icon to open the fuel gauge program
5. Double click the "Current Power Mode" icon until power mode icon changes to "Customized" mode.
Customized power mode is now active.

Disabling automatic suspend will avoid an erroneous situation occurring in Windows NT. This is minimum thing that should be done in order to avoid automatic suspend either in AC power mode or battery power mode.

Using Windows NT 3.51 on ThinkPad 345C/370C
When you use the ThinkPad 345C or 370C, special consideration is required to run Windows NT Workstation V3.51. During and after installing Windows NT on these machines, the diskette drive does not work on these systems. To be able to use the FDD drive, you must replace the NTDETECT.COM file which will fix this problem. To replace the file, take the following steps:

Replacing NTDETECT.COM
The new NTWDETECT.COM file can be obtained from Microsoft.

1. If you install Windows NT using Windows NT Setup Boot Disk, the original NTDETECT.COM should not be used. Make the back up copy of the original disk and overwrite with new NTDETECT.COM which should be located in the root directory of the Setup Boot Disk.

2. During the installation of Windows NT, you may continue to install using Windows NT CD-ROM. In this case, the original NTDETECT.COM is copied to NT install drive even if Setup Boot Disk has new NTDETECT.COM. In this case, take the following to steps.

3. Original NTDETECT.COM is read only, hidden system file located in the root directory of the NT install drive. Use the ATTRIB command to change the file attribute to change the file attribute:
ATTRIB -r -h -s NTDETECT.COM

4. Copy the new NTDETECT.COM to overwrite.

5. Restart Windows NT.

Note:
If you copy the new NTDETECT.COM from the diskette drive, you must boot the system with DOS. If you run NT, you can not access floppy drive to do this.

Tips for MWAVE/DSP Features program
Some useful hints/limitations are fully documented in README.TXT of Windows NT MWAVE install disk1. Read this document for the details.

Currently, the following features are not provided:
- Speaker phone/answering machine
- SoundBlaster game support
- Class-1 FAX

o Suspending during MIDI/WAVE play may not recover properly after the system is resumed. Discontinue MIDI/WAVE play prior to entering Suspend Mode.

o Setting the music option playing with Pinball Game causes the game to play slowly. Avoid setting this option.

o Read FAQs about the each specific modem application/FAX application/multimedia applications for more details. These information are documented in README.TXT in Windows NT MWAVE Install Disk 1.

Known limitations with Windows NT 3.51
Currently, the following functions are not provided on Windows NT 3.51

Enhanced video functions such as video overlay and video capture features are not supported.

Suspend/Resume are not supported on ThinkPad 345C/370C. Power Management function is limited. Even if suspend/resume is supported on some other ThinkPad models, using Hibernation function is limited as follows:

If Windows NT system partition is created with NTFS, hibernation is not supported. Another limitation is if system is booted using the hibernation file, PCMCIA slot is not powered on. Shutdown and restart Windows NT to use the PCMCIA card.

Battery life may become shorter depending on the memory size, and types of things you do with Windows NT. Since Windows NT does not support advanced power management functions such as CPU power saving function or idle detection. Pay attention to the fuel gauge to monitor the battery life during the operation.

When ISA adapter cards such as network adapter cards are used with an IBM docking unit, disable unused system devices such as MWAVE modem, IR port if available IRQ for the specific ISA card is constrained. On ThinkPad 755e family, the default configuration for the system device uses many IRQs that constrains using for the ISA cards in the docking unit. Recommended to use IRQ =7 if the default configuration is required when the ISA card is used, especially with IBM Dock-II.

The number of PCMCIA devices is limited. Supported PCMCIA devices are listed on the Microsoft Windows NT Hardware Compatibility List.

To use a PCMCIA card, it must be inserted in the PCMCIA slot before Windows NT is started. Inserting or removing the card after Windows NT is started is not supported. Only cold insertion for PCMCIA cards is activated.

On ThinkPad 755CD/CDV, PCMCIA ATA storage cards are not recognized because the internal CD-ROM is used as the secondary IDE which conflicts with the resource allocated for PCMCIA IDE under Windows NT.

To avoid the conflict of the interrupt number, change the default 1st IRQ IRQ 11 to IRQ15 on PCI Device Setup menu/Docking Station Advanced Setup menu using the ThinkPad Feature Program.

Windows NT supports IBM Dock-I, IBM Dock-II, IBM SelectaDock Base model 1 and IBM SelectaDock I or II. However, hot/warm docking is not supported. To use the device in the Docking station, you must only do cold docking for the docking devices.
