PCMCIA 8X-20X CD-ROM Drive - Installation and Troubleshooting under Windows 95

Product Limitations:

1. The Game Port is supported only in a Windows 95 environment. There is no support for a joystick in DOS, Windows NT, or OS/2.

2. A digital joystick is not supported. Use an analog joystick or gamepad.

3. The joystick must be attached to the device before the system is started in Windows 95. If the joystick is attached after the system has started, shutdown and restart the system.

4. The game port does not support MIDI devices.

5. Systems with built-in game ports may conflict with the game port for the 20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive. This may require the built-in game port to be disabled.

6. The 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive is not supported with Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0. Sound and the game port will not operate in an NT environment.

7. Sound is not supported in a Win-OS2 session when using the 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive in an OS/2 Warp v3 or v4 environment.

8. Sound with the 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive is supported in a native Windows 95 environment. Sound is not supported in a DOS application within Windows 95.

9. The 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive uses the ESS1688 sound chip. This may cause conflicts with systems that have built-in sound support, which will require built-in sound support to be disabled.

10. The 20X Max Portable and Portable Stereo CD ROM Drives may fail to be recognized after the system has resumed from its suspend mode. If this occurs, you will need to remove the PC Card prior to suspending the system, and then inserting the PC Card after the system has resumed.

11. Your system may experience a hang condition on boot when using Windows 95. When the PC card from the 20X Max portable or Portable Stereo CD-ROM drives are used with a network adapter, such as a Token Ring Credit Card Adapter. A MicroSoft article has been written and is available on the MicroSoft web site under Technical Support at: http://www.microsoft.com

The article ID is Q136777. the conflict is seen when the network adapter uses a default I/O address of 220. You will need to resolve the conflict by manually configuring both devices.

Upgrading to Windows 95 from Windows 3.1:

1. If the device driver of the 20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD-ROM drive has not yet been installed, run INSTALL.EXE from the option diskette. This is to install the CD ROM driver from DOS. Once installation has completed, reboot your system for changes to take effect.

2. Insert the Windows 95 Upgrade CD-ROM into your 20X Max Portable CD ROM drive.

3. Start Windows 3.1.

4. Go to File Manager.

5. Click on the CD ROM icon for the 20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD ROM drive.

6. Run SETUP.EXE from the CD-ROM. This will begin the installation of Windows 95.

7. When the installation of Windows 95 is completed, restart your system.

8. Click on PC Card (PCMCIA) in Control Panel.

9. The PC Card (PCMCIA) wizard is displayed. Do the following:
a. Select No; then click on Next.

b. Select No in the PC Card (PCMCIA) wizard window; then click on Next.

c. Click on Finish.

d. Click on Yes in the System Settings Change window.

e. Restart your system. Windows 95 will now be installed with 32 Bit support for PCMCIA/PC Cards.

Installing 20X Max Portable CD ROM Support in Windows 95:
1. Attach the interface cable from the CD-ROM drive to the PC Card. Insert the PC Card into the computer PC Card slot. The PC Card included with the 20X Max Portable CD-ROM will require a PCMCIA type II slot. Turn on the system and the CD-ROM drive.

2. When Windows 95 recognizes that the new PC Card has been installed, the 'New Hardware' window will be displayed.

3. Insert the diskette provided with the IBM 8X Min/20X Max Portable CD-ROM into the floppy disk drive and click on 'next'. Follow the on screen instructions. The diskette will be required to complete the installation.

4. When the Windows 95 hardware installation program asks for the location of the device drivers for the IBM 8X/20X PCMCIA CD-ROM, type in the drive letter for the computer's floppy disk drive (typically A:\) in place of any default location, such as C:\windows\options\cabs. Click on finish to complete the installation.

5. After Windows 95 has copied the device drivers, it will state that the computer must be restarted to complete the installation. Remove the diskette from the floppy drive and restart the computer.

6. When Windows 95 restarts, the 'new hardware' window will appear again. Repeat steps 3 through 5 to install the IBM 8X/20X CD-ROM joystick port.

NOTE: Ensure the diskette is removed from the floppy disk drive prior to restarting the system.

NOTE: If your drive failed to install properly, a conflict may have occurred. Go to troubleshooting steps in the user's guide to isolate conflicts and resolve the problem. Uninstall support for the 20X Max Portable CD-ROM drive using the instructions and retry the installation steps.

Installing 20X Max Portable Stereo CD-ROM Support in Windows 95:
Installation steps are identical to the above steps with the exception of the additional installation of the device drivers for the 8X/20X Stereo CD-ROM/ES1688 Audio Drive.

1. Attach the interface cable from the CD-ROM drive to the PC Card. Insert the PC Card into the computer PC Card slot. The PC Card included with the 20X Max Portable CD-ROM will require a PCMCIA type II slot. Turn on the system and the CD-ROM drive.

2. When Windows 95 recognizes that the new PC Card has been installed, the 'New Hardware' window will be displayed.

3. Insert the diskette provided with the IBM 8X Min/20X Max Portable CD-ROM into the floppy disk drive and click on 'next'. Follow the on screen instructions. The diskette will be required to complete the installation.

4. When the Windows 95 hardware installation program asks for the location of the device drivers for the IBM 8X/20X PCMCIA CD-ROM, type in the drive letter for the computer's floppy disk drive (typically A:\) in place of any default location, such as C:\windows\options\cabs. NOTE: If your drive failed to install properly, a conflict may have occurred. Go to troubleshooting steps in the user's guide to isolate conflicts and resolve the problem. Uninstall support for the 20X Max Portable CD-ROM drive using the instructions and retry the installation steps.

CD-ROM Uninstall Steps for Windows 95:
1. Attach the interface cable from the CD ROM drive to the PC Card. Insert your PC Card into the PC Card slot on your computer. The PC Card included with the 20X Max CD ROM will require a PCMCIA Type II slot. Turn on your system and the CD ROM drive.

2. Double click on My Computer and find Control Panel.

3. Double click on Control Panel and find System.

4. Double click on System and select the Device Manager Tab.

5. From Device Manager, select View Devices by Type.

6. Double click on Multifunction adapter from the System Properties list.

7. Select IBM IDE PC Card and then click on Remove. Select OK at the Confirm Device Removal prompt.

8. Click on Start from the Task Bar.

9. Go to Find and select Files or Folders.

10. From the Find All Files window, ensure that the drive where Windows 95 has been installed is found in the Look In entry. Select the Advanced Tab.

11. Select Setup Information from the Of Type list.

12. Type CD20X in the Containing Text entry. Click on Find Now. The 20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD ROM setup information files should now be listed. CD20X will be listed for both 20X CD ROM drives. CD20XJOY will be listed for the joystick and CD20XSND will be listed for sound support when using the 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive.

13. Click Edit from the menu bar and click on Select All. Press the Delete key.

14. Click Yes to delete the CD20X related files.

15. Restart Windows 95

Troubleshooting with Windows 95:

PC Card is not recognized:
a. Ensure that the drive has been correctly connected.

b. Ensure that PCMCIA support has been installed for the system, and that the PC Card slots are active.

c. Attempt to uninstall support for the 20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD ROM drive as described in Section 2.4. Once support has been removed, attempt to reinstall CD ROM support using steps from Section 3.2 or 3.3.

PC Card does not configure:
a. A resource conflict may exist that does not allow the device to configure its IRQ or I/O address. The device will support IRQ 0, 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or 15, and I/O addresses of 210, 230, 250,and 270. Resolve the conflict with your system.

b. PC Card/PCMCIA support is in 16 bit mode. Ensure that 32 Bit PC Card/PCMCIA support is enabled. To check the selection, open My Computer and double click on Control Panel and then double click on System. From System, select the Performance Tab, and then click on File System. From File System Properties, select the Troubleshooting Tab. Verify that a check mark is not present next to Disable all 32 bit protect-mode disk drivers.

PC Card Configures but no CD ROM Icon Appears:
a. Ensure that the drive has been correctly connected.

b. A resource conflict may exist that does not allow the device to configure its IRQ or I/O address. The device will support IRQ 0, 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or 15, and I/O addresses of 210, 230, 250, and 270. Resolve the conflict with your system.

c. Incomplete installation occurred when attempting to install support for the 20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive. You will not be able to use the uninstall steps covered in Section 2.4.

No Sound:
1. Disable System unit Sound Support when Using the 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive
a. Double click on My Computer and find Control Panel.

b. Double click Control Panel and find System.

c. Double click on System and select the Device Manager Tab.

d. Ensure that View Devices by Type is selected.

e. Double click on Sound, Video and Game Controllers from the System Properties list. Select the sound device used by the system unit, and then click on Properties.

f. Disable the device from the hardware profile listing by unchecking the box where the device should be used, or checking the box to disable the device depending upon the version of Windows 95 that is being used.

g. Click on OK from the Properties Window, and then click on OK from the System Properties Window. Shutdown and restart the system.

2. Verify Volume Control is turned to adequate level.

Note: Your system unit user's guide may contain additional information on disabling the sound from your system.

Joystick Port:
Digital joysticks are not supported with the joystick port. An analog joystick is supported in Windows 95, but the joystick must be connected to the joystick port before the system is started. If the joystick is added after the system has been started, shutdown and reboot the system. Joystick support should have been added when installing support for the 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive.

Some systems may have a game port which conflicts with the port used by the 20X Max Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive. To disable the system game port from Windows 95:
a. Double click on My Computer and find Control Panel.

b. Double click on Control Panel and find System.

c. Double click on System and select the Device Manager Tab.

d. Ensure that View Devices by Type is selected.

e. Double click on Sound, Video and Game Controllers from the System Properties list. Select the Gameport Joystick from the list, and then click on Properties. Ensure that the General Tab has been selected.

f. Disable the device from the hardware profile listing by unchecking the box where the device should be used, or checking the box to disable the device depending upon the version of Windows 95 that is being used.

g. Click on OK from the Properties Window, and then click on OK from the System Properties Window. Shutdown and restart the system.

h. If a driver shipped with the joystick, disable or uninstall the joystick driver shipped with the device. Shutdown and restart your system.

Note: Your joystick user's guide may contain additional information on disabling the joystick drive in Windows 95.

20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive not recognized with Suspend/Resume Mode:
If the drive fails to be recognized after resuming, you will need to remove the PC Card for the 20X Max CD ROM Drives prior to suspending. Insert the PC Card after resuming.

Reinstalling Windows 95 Using the 20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive:
Your system may have included a Windows 95 CD-ROM. To reinstall Windows 95 from the 20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD ROM Drive, you will need to modify the Startup Diskette.

To create a Startup Diskette:
1. Double click on My Computer and find Control Panel.

2. Double click on Control Panel and find Add/Remove Programs.

3. Double click on Add/Remove Programs, and select the Startup Disk Tab.

4. Click on Create Disk and follow the on-screen instructions.

To modify the Startup Diskette:
1. Copy DOS Card and Socket Services to the Windows 95 Startup Diskette. Use Explorer or DOS COPY command.

2. Open CONFIG.SYS from the Startup Diskette with an editor program and add the statements for Card and Socket Services.

3. Copy PCMCD20X.SYS from the 20X Max Portable or Portable Stereo CD ROM diskette to the root directory of the Windows 95 Startup Diskette. Use Explorer or DOS COPY command.

4. Open CONFIG.SYS on the Startup Diskette with an editor program and add DEVICE=PCMCD20X.SYS /D:PCMCD001. Save your CONFIG.SYS.

5. Open AUTOEXEC.BAT from the Startup Diskette with an editor program. Add LASTDRIVE=Z. Also, add MSCDEX /D:PCMCD001. Save your AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Note: Refer to your documentation that was included with your system unit. Card and Socket Services for DOS may vary from system to system. The above steps will allow the 20X Max Portable and Portable Stereo CD ROM Drives to be accessible from a DOS command prompt.
