Do not rely on serial number only for the above drives. Drives outside this initial estimated range might be affected. Serial Numbers were an attempt to scope issue and to track drives affected.

The 94G3xxx series of Ultrastar 2GB and 4GB SCSI hard drives may exhibit a problem of stiction when a system using the drive is left running for long periods of time (such as 30 consecutive days, which implies potential server models will be involved.) Certain drives will be involved with part numbers and serial numbers to follow.

To avoid stiction, customer should power down drive once a day, and not leave the drive running for long periods of time (more than several weeks without powering down). Problem may occur when customer then wants to restart the drive after drive has been running for several weeks, and the drive does not spin up on POR. This will cause a SCSI error to be displayed in most cases. If the drive spins when power is applied, the drive is not affected. A parts exchange of the drive may not solve the long-term problem as well.

1) Collect data - when drive was purchased and serial# of the drive.
2) To avoid stiction on affected drives, recommend:

a) Turn the system off once a day, do not let system run for 30 consecutive days w/o powerdown.

b) If drive does not spin with power applied, turn system off and remove drive from system. Attempt to rotate the drive in a clockwise direction 90 degrees at a time repeatedly. This may free the heads. More inertia will have a better chance in freeing the drive heads. Do not drop the drive or touch drive electronics, as drive is sensitive to G forces and electrostatic discharge. Attempt to twist the drive 3 times and then install to see if drive is able to spin.

c) If above steps fail to free stuck drive, power system off or issue SCSI STOP command. Attempt to POR the drive. Do not let the drive remain idle for more than a minute.

If the drive has become stuck, attempt to bring the drive back on line where the customer may then backup the data. Drives in Boulder stock should not exhibit this problem, and should not require anti-stiction recommendations.

The best fix to the stiction problem is a new motor that was cut in with EC 486500. The EC is on the HDA. The EC was cut in on 7/21/95. FRU stock is being checked and purged for drives that do not meet this EC level.

EC 486500 is the most significant change relative to actual field performance for fly stiction (a spindle motor ec), 486506 relates to the application of Anti-Wetting Agent (AWA) to the heads to prevent collection and 486509 is a change to the servo module.
