If you cannot get the updated software from either one, please contact your IBM representative.

1.2. System program update (Flash BIOS update):
Before you install Windows 95, you are strongly recommended to get the following version of ThinkPad System Program Service Diskette and to update your flash BIOS. Otherwise, Windows 95 may not run as explained in this document. You need to follow the instructions provided by the system program service diskette very carefully to update your flash BIOS program. Your system could be damaged by incorrect operations during this system program update.

<Important!>
You need to update the flash BIOS prior to install Windows 95 on your ThinkPad. In case you have already installed Windows 95 and update the flash BIOS later, you may need to run "Add hardware Wizard" of Windows 95 once again. If some problem still persists, it is recommended to reinstall Windows 95 after the flash BIOS update.

1.3. Backing up your software and data:
IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled operating systems, device drivers and applications. In addition, IBM recommends that you back up all data files to disk before installing Windows 95.

1.4. Removing preinstalled software:
Removing OS/2 Warp:
If you purchase a SelectaSystem model and are using OS/2 Warp version 3, Windows 95 cannot be installed with OS/2 Warp dual boot configuration in the SelectaSystem. Therefore, if you wish to install Windows 95, OS/2 Warp should be removed from your system along with all the preinstalled OS/2 applications. "Uninstall OS/2" icon is available for you in "OS/2 Warp" program group folder on your Windows desktop screen of SelectaSystem configuration.

If you wish to continue using OS/2 Warp with Windows 95, you need to use OS/2 Warp Boot Manager. For more information, refer to Windows 95 SETUP.TXT file. It can be found on the Windows 95 disk 1 or the Windows 95 CD-ROM.

Removing ThinkPad Welcome Screen:
If you plan to install, or have already installed Windows 95 over the following ThinkPad systems with factory preinstalled software, you may encounter "Windows 95 Explorer Fault".

If you have this problem, or to avoid this problem, please take the following steps.

Edit your WIN.INI file located under C:\WINDOWS subdirectory. For example, type "E C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI" and press ENTER from DOS command prompt.

In [windows] section, find the "load=" statement. Remove STRTSCR.EXE from the "load=" statement as follows.

<Example>

Your original WIN.INI
[windows]
:
load=C:\SCREENS\STRTSCR.EXE C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE
:

Remove STRTSCR.EXE
[windows]
:
load=C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE
:

After you remove STRTSCR.EXE, you will no longer see the ThinkPad Welcome screen. If you have already removed this
screen, nothing will be changed by removing STRTSCR.EXE. ThinkPad 701C/CS System Specific Instructions

2.0 Install and setup Windows 95 on ThinkPad:
Before you proceed:
The Windows 95 device drivers for ThinkPad 701C are included in Windows 95. When you install Windows 95 operating system on ThinkPad 701C, the device drivers are installed automatically.

Display settings:
The video adapter should be configured to "Chips and Tech. Accelerator". The Monitor should be configured to "Standard Display Type: Laptop Display Panel (640X480). The 701c will support color palettes up to High Color (16 bit) , the 701cs will support up to 256 colors. These setting can be found under the display Icon in the Windows 95 Control Panel.

Audio Settings:
The audio adapter in the Thinkpad 701 is an "ESS ES688 AudioDrive", The latest drivers for this adapter are located on the Thinkpad 701 Audio Features for Windows 95 diskette, available from the WWW/BBS and use the following instructions:

Installing the software:
1. Put the driver diskette into the A: diskette drive.
2. From the Control Panel open Add New Hardware.
3. At the Hardware types menu select Sound, video and games controllers.
Click the Have Disk button.
4. From the Select Device Models table, select ESS ES688 AudioDrive.

Modem:
The Thinkpad 701 modem should be configured as "IBM Thinkpad 701 Internal Modem" The modem supports Baud rates up to 19200.

3.0 PCMCIA Device driver:
Windows 95 comes with the integrated PCMCIA support. To use the Windows 95 PCMCIA support functions, refer to the Windows 95 documentation or on-line help.

If you want to use ThinkPad PC Card Director (or EasyPlaying), you still can use ThinkPad DOS PCMCIA device drivers. To install ThinkPad PCMCIA device drivers, follow the instructions of "Installing the PCMCIA drivers - Installing for DOS" in the ThinkPad User's Guide.

It is recommended to use the Windows 95 PCMCIA drivers. The PCMCIA controller should be configured as "Cirrus Logic PCIC compatible PCMCIA controller"

<Important!>
The Windows 95 installation program doesn't enable its own 32bit PCMCIA support automatically. If you already have a ThinkPad system with ThinkPad DOS/Windows PCMCIA software and install Windows 95 on the system, the Windows 95 installation program keeps the ThinkPad PCMCIA support software and you can keep using it. However, the Windows 95 plug and play functions of its own PCMCIA support cannot be used with ThinkPad PCMCIA support software. For more detail about PCMCIA support software setup, refer to "Section 11.4. PCMCIA support
software setup.

4.0 Known limitations with Windows 95:
-Auto suspend not working when docked. If you dock the ThinkPad 701, the auto suspend timer doesn't work due to a Adaptec SCSI driver limitation in Windows 95.

-PCMCIA power management limitations:
Windows 95 doesn't turn off PC cards before suspend. This would cause shorter suspend time due to power drain. To turn off PC cards during suspend, do one of the following.
- With ThinkPad 701C System Disk version 3M or later: Press Fn+F11 followed immediately by Fn+Enter to set a flag forcing BIOS to suspend the PCMCIA even if there is a powered card in the slot (with PCMCIA power setting = Auto in
Configuration Utility). This should work for modem cards.
- Use IBM PC Card Director PCMCIA software

5.0 System independent information:
Suspend command on Start menu:
The "Suspend" command should be visible in the "Start" menu above "Shut Down" command. If Windows 95 that you have doesn't enable this "Suspend" command, please take the following steps to correct the problem.

<Enable APM functions>
1. Click "My Computer"
2. Click "Control Panel"
3. Click "System"
4. Click on "Device Manager" tab
5. Select "System Devices", "Advanced Power Management", "Settings"
6. Verify that "Enable Power management support" is selected
7. Click "OK"

<Make suspend command visible>
1. Click "My Computer"
2. Click "Control Panel"
3. Click "Power"
4. Select either "Always" or "Only when undocked" (depending on a type of ThinkPad you have) in "Show Suspend command on Start menu" box.

Hibernation and Compression
If a user has compressed their hard disk they will receive an error at boot time saying there is an error with the hibernation file. This will happen if the user did not leave enough uncompressed space to store the hibernation file. The hibernation file cannot be kept on a compress hard disk. This is due to the fact that the compressed drive cannot be read until the drivers required are loaded. If the system is put into hibernation these drivers are not retained in RAM. Therefore the needed instructions for using the compressed hard drive are not available to the system when returning from hibernation. You can avoid this problem by leaving enough space uncompressed to hold your hibernation file. The amount to leave uncompressed is based on your total system memory + total video memory + 1 MB. That means that if you have 16MB total ram installed then you need, 16 (total ram) + 1 (1MB video ram) + 1 (other buffers)= 18MB total uncompressed space needed.

6.0 PCMCIA function limitations:
When you inserted a PC card into PCMCIA slots of ThinkPad, the suspend function has the following limitations by design.
- When the system is power by AC, ThinkPad doesn't enter full suspend and enters standby mode.
- When the system is power by battery, ThinkPad always enter suspend mode regardless of the PC card status. You may lose the connection if your PC card is a network card or modem.

The PCMCIA support software in Windows 95 has the following limitations:
- It does not support the ring indicator of PCMCIA modem cards. Therefore, you cannot use ring indications by PCMCIA modems even if it's support by cards.
- It does not support PCMCIA hard disks power down, even if it's supported by hard disks
- It does not support the system boot from PCMCIA hard disks

7.0 ISA/PCMCIA adapter card compatibility in Dock II:
You may encounter difficulty in getting ISA and PCMCIA adapter cards to function properly when the system is installed in a Dock II docking station. If this occurs, one of the following is likely the cause:

1) There can be a timing problem between the ISA bus of the Thinkpad and that of the Dock II. This can cause unpredictable operation of both ISA and PCMCIA adapters, especially if the PCMCIA adapter is in the slot of the Dock II. The timing in the Thinkpad 701 can be adjusted to match up with the Dock II when docked by performing the following operation:
You must have BIOS version 3N or later - With the Thinkpad booted standalone (out of the docking station), press the following key sequence Fn+Right Arrow then Fn+Enter (You can just hold down Fn then hit the right arrow and the Enter key in quick sequence). This will adjust the timing only when the Thinkpad is in the Dock-II. This setting will remain in effect unless the Thinkpad is initialized by rebooting with both mouse buttons depressed (which resets all configurable values in BIOS/CMOS to their default values).

2) There is another PCMCIA controller in Dock II, Windows 95 Device manager should detect this as a, "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA Controller", and show it using the resource of I/O address 03E2-03E3. If it is not present in device manager, or has a different description or resource usage it may need to be manually configured. Use the Device manager interface and/or Control Panel - Add New Hardware to accomplish this. This may be the likely cause if a PCMCIA adapter works in the Thinkpad slots, but not in the Dock II slots.

3) PCMCIA Modem no dialtone or other sounds. If you are using a Dock II with the ThinkPad 701 and insert a PCMCIA modem in the PCMCIA port of the docking station no modem sound (dialtone, handshake or other) will be heard. This is due to an unconnected circuit trace in the Dock II PCMCIA bus. There is no workaround other than to use the PCMCIA modem card in the PCMCIA port on the ThinkPad.

8.0 PCMCIA support software setup:
The Windows 95 installation program doesn't enable its own 32bit PCMCIA support software.

If you have a ThinkPad on which the ThinkPad DOS/Windows PCMCIA support software is already installed and want to use it after you install Windows 95 on the ThinkPad, you don't have to perform any specific setup. The Windows 95 installation program automatically migrates the installed ThinkPad PCMCIA support software over to Windows 95 environment.

If you have a ThinkPad on which the ThinkPad DOS/Windows PCMCIA support software is already installed but want to use Windows 95 PCMCIA support software after you install Windows 95 on the ThinkPad, follow the next steps.

1. Click "My Computer"
2. Click "Control Panel"
3. Click "PC Card"
4. Select "No" for the question "Are you using a PC card to install Windows?"; then click "Next"
5. Select "Yes" for the question "Would you like to review the change to your system files before Windows disable these
drivers?"; then click "Next"
6. Verify that the following statements are highlighted to be removed from your CONFIG.SYS.

DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\IBMDSS01.SYS
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\IBMDOSCS.SYS
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\DICRMU01.SYS
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\$ICPMDOS.SYS
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\AUTODRV.SYS C:\THINKPAD\AUTODRV.INI
DEVICE=C:\THINKPAD\SRAMDRV2.SYS

Click "Next"; Windows 95 also lets you review AUTOEXEC.BAT and SYSTEM.INI. There are no ThinkPad PCMCIA support software setup included in AUTOEXEC.BAT and SYSTEM.INI.
7. After you review all the system files, click "Finish" to complete the Windows 95 PCMCIA support setup.

If you want to use the ThinkPad PCMCIA support software after you enabled the Windows 95 PCMCIA support software, you MUST disable Windows 95 PCMCIA support again. Windows 95 disables its own PCMCIA support as default. To make sure this;

1. Click "My Computer"
2. Click "Control Panel"
3. Click "System"
4. Click on "Device Manager" tab
5. Click "+" mark on "PCMCIA socket"
6. Verify that "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller" is disabled. (Red "X" sign should be visible on the PCIC icon, and "Device Status" is "This device is disabled" when you double click the PCIC icon.) If the PCMCIA controller is already enabled ("Device Status" is "This device is working properly".), highlight "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller" by clicking
the PCIC icon; click "Remove" button; then follow the instructions to disable Windows 95 PCMCIA support.

9.0 ThinkPad Docking control utility:
If you have installed Windows 95 over a ThinkPad on which the docking control utility program for Windows is already installed, don't use the utility. The Docking control utility provides several docking functions under Windows but is not necessary under Windows 95 any longer. All the docking capability by this utility is now provided by ThinkPad Plug-and-Play BIOS and Windows 95 Plug-and-Play support. You don't have to install or use any specific programs to enable ThinkPad docking functions under Windows 95. It is recommended to remove the following statements from Windows INI files.

WIN.INI file
[windows]
:
load=C:\THINKPAD\DOCKWIN.EXE <-remove this statement
:

SYSTEM.INI file
:
[386Enh]
:
device=IBMPNP.386 <-remove this statement
:

10.0 ThinkPad Dock II docking station:
ThinkPad Dock II docking station supports docking and undocking operations without system power off. You can dock and undock the system when it is suspended (warm docking), or you can dock and undock the system when it is powered on (hot docking). This feature is available for 755, 701, 360 and 370 systems. When you use hot / warm docking, you must disable the host adapter SCSI BIOS of Dock I docking station. You can disable the host adapter SCSI BIOS y the Dock II SCSISelect utility. Press Ctrl+A when prompted at boot time. Then select "Configure/View Host Adapter Settings" and disable the Host Adapter BIOS. You can also disable the host adapter BIOS by dip switches. For further information, refer to Chapter 5. Using the SCSI Controller" of Dock II User's Guide.

APPENDIX: Installing the IBM Auto 16/4 Token Ring PCMCIA adapter in Windows 95:
Some people have reported difficulty in installing this adapter in Windows 95. Here are the complete, proven instructions for doing so.

1) Obtain the trcc.exe file from the IBM PCCO BBS or Web Site, make the first diskette (trcc1.exe).
2) Follow the instructions in the \win95\read.me file from that disk to ensure that Windows 95 will prompt for a diskette when the card is inserted.
3) From a clean (no network card installed) configuration, boot the system to the Windows 95 desktop.
4) Insert the IBM Token Ring Adapter (16/4 Auto PCMCIA Adapter) into the slot, use the trcc1 diskette when prompted. Install the card, supplying the Win95 disks or CD if requested.
5) When the installation asks to shut down and restart, do so.
6) After the system is restarted, go directly to device manager and open the settings for the network adapter. Select the resources tab.

If necessary, choose settings manually to get to the change screen, deselect the "use automatic settings" check box

6A) Use the down arrow to choose "Settings based on Basic Configuration 0001"

((NOTE! If you do not do this now, you will not get the chance later, and in most situations it has been very difficult to change these settings again later if the settings chosen are not correct. Some of the Basic Settings selections in the "settings based on" box use as much as a 64K shared ram area, whereas others allows for a 16 or32K area. The 701 requires that the network card NOT be placed at D0000, nor at E0000, so a 64K area is asking for trouble.))

6B) Select the resources individually, these have been verified:

I/O A20-A27 (if current ESS audio support is loaded there is no problem with the audio at 220h)
IRQ 9, or 15 (I usually have the audio set at 10, SCSI if any at 11)
Memory D4000-D5FFF
Memory D8000-DFFFF

7) After the system is restarted you should be in business, again, if the basic configuration 0001 is not selected, the choice will not be made available again, you will have to remove the card from the device manager, and the network object in control panel and start over.

The only other glitch that the parallel ports MUST be set to standard parallel or EPP mode, NOT ECP.

FYI - The same instructions work on all current Thinkpads, with different resource settings in a couple of cases. Also the other machines for the most part do not have a problem with D0000 and E0000 so a 64K segment for shared ram is wasteful, but not usually a problem there.

11.0 Multi Port and Video Corruption:
When a customer connects the ThinkPad 701 to the Multi Port Windows 95 will report that there is a problem with the video hardware. The error will occur on the first reboot of Windows 95 with the Multi Port attached. Windows 95 will then show the Display Settings dialog box. Choose Cancel and allow Windows 95 to start in VGA (16 color) mode. Then go to the Control Panel and choose the Add New Hardware wizard. Allow Windows 95 to detect all devices. Windows 95 will report back that it has found a new video card and will install the driver. This is actually the same driver as was already installed. It seems that Windows 95 is detecting the additional pass through circuitry of the Multi Port. After Windows 95 installs this driver the system can be used normally.
