TP General - Installing the IBM PCMCIA Token Ring Card

Applicable to: World-Wide

Installing the IBM PCMCIA Token-Ring card under Windows 95

1. Many ThinkPads have the I/O setting for audio set to 220. This setting will be in conflict with the Token-Ring adapter. Change the Audio or Sound Blaster I/O address from 220 to 240. On most ThinkPads this is done via the ThinkPad Features Utility. Consult your User' s Guide for specific instructions for your system.

2. Download the latest version of TRPCC2.EXE from the IBM Networking Web site at: http://www.networking.ibm.com/nes/nestoken.htm. After downloading the file to your hard drive, insert a blank 3.5" diskette into the floppy drive. Go to an MS-DOS prompt, change to the directory containing the TRPCC2.EXE and type TRPCC2. This will create a new Token-Ring adapter diskette.

3. Go to Control Panel, then choose Network. Select the Token-Ring adapter, click Remove, then click OK. Under Control Panel, select System, then Device Manager. Double-click on Network Adapters, remove the protocols, then choose the Token-Ring adapter, click Remove, then click OK. Do Not restart yet. Do a Shut down of Windows 95, not just a restart. Physically remove the PCMCIA Token-Ring adapter from the slot.

4. With the adapter out of the socket, restart the machine. Go to an MS-DOS prompt. Insert the TRPCC2 diskette, go to A:\, then type FIXWIN95. This will execute a fix to allow Win95 to configure the Token-Ring adapter correctly. Copy the NETIBM4.INF from A:\ to C:\WINDOWS\INF. Delete IBMTOK.VXD from C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. When finished, remove the diskette and do a shut down of Windows 95.

5. Restart the machine. After Windows 95 is up, re-insert the Token-Ring adapter in the socket. Make sure the cable is attached to both the adapter and the network. Windows 95 should find the new hardware and prompt you for the Mfg. supplied diskette. Insert the TRPCC2 diskette, go to A:\ and click OK. Add Windows 95 diskettes / CD-ROM or point to the ".CAB" files as directed. Remove any diskettes from the floppy drive and allow the system to restart.

6. When Windows 95 comes back up go to Control Panel, select System, then Device Manager. Double-click on Network Adapters, select the Token-Ring adapter, then click Properties. If the Input-Output range is A20-A27 then go back to Step 3. If the Input-Output range is A20-A23 then proceed, if it shows A24-A27 change it to A20-A23.

7. Valid memory ranges for this card are within "000C8000 - 000DFFFF". If you need to change the memory ranges, un-check Use automatic settings. Select each memory range and click on Change setting. Set the memory ranges to "000C????-000C????" or "000D????-000D????", where "????" is between 0000 and FFFF. If the second memory range will only accept a full 64Kb block, (000D0000-000DFFFF) then go back to Step 3.

Example:

Memory Range

000DA000-000DBFFF

8Kb

Memory Range

000DC000-000DFFFF

16Kb

You may also need to set the Interrupt Request to a known available IRQ, usually 9 or 11.

8. When Windows 95 is up, right-click on Network Neighborhood & go to properties. Double-click on the IBM Auto 16/4 Token-Ring Credit Card Adapter then choose the Advanced tab. Highlight Network Data Rate and change the selection from Automatically Detect to match the speed of your Token-Ring, either 16 Mbps or 4 Mbps, then choose OK & allow Windows 95 to restart.

NOTE: If you see a message "The resources this adapter is using do not match any known configuration", but the adapter is still connected to the network, just ignore the message. If the adapter is not connected to the network, go back to Step 3.
