TP General - How to insure Advanced Power Management for DOS/Windows 3.1x, Windows 95 and OS/2 is installed correctly

This document contains instructions on how to enable/disable APM .

Verify that APM has been installed correctly:
DOS:
You will want to verify the power.exe is loaded in the CONFIG.SYS.
-Turn on the ThinkPad and start DOS. *NOTE: If Windows starts automatically click file+exit+yes to exit to DOS.
-Type: e config.sys and press Enter. *NOTE: If you have Microsoft DOS you will have to type edit CONFIG.SYS and press Enter.
-Look through the file for the line: Device=c:\dos\power.exe
-If it is there, then you are fine. If not, then add the line at the end of the file.

For Windows 3.1x:
- Turn on the ThinkPad and start Windows
- Click on File+Exit and then click Yes to exit Windows to the DOS prompt
- Type cd\windows and press Enter
- Type SETUP and press Enter
- Verify next to Computer you have "MS-DOS System with APM"

If you need to change it, do this:
- Arrow up until the Computer field is highlighted and press Enter
- Arrow down near the bottom and highlight "MS-DOS System with APM"
- Press Enter and then Enter to Accept the configuration shown above
- If the Installation ask for a diskette then put it in. If it is already loaded press Enter to keep Driver.
- The install will complete and leave you at the c:\windows prompt
- Turn off the ThinkPad and then restart it.

For Windows 95:
- Turn on the ThinkPad and start Windows 95
- Click on Start+Settings+Control Panel
- Double-click on the System icon
- Click on Device Manager
- Arrow Down the Categories and double-click on System Devices
- Double-click Advanced Power Management support (the first one)
- Click on the Settings Tab
- Make sure that Enable power management support is checked
- If changes are made you will need to restart the ThinkPad (Start+Shutdown+Restart the computer+Yes)

For OS/2 Warp:
- Turn on the ThinkPad and start OS/2
- Double-click on the OS/2 System icon
- Double-click on the Command Prompts icon
- Double-click on the OS/2 Window icon
- Type cd\ and press Enter
- Type e CONFIG.SYS and press Enter
- Search for the line: Device=c:\os2\boot\apm.sys
- If it is there, your are fine. If it is not there, then add it.

NOTES:
If you are having trouble with standby, suspend, or hibernation kicking in unwarrantedly then check your settings in:

ThinkPad Features in the ThinkPad group (365X/XD,380,385,560,760,770):
- Click on the battery icon and then the faucet icon.

Power program in the ThinkPad group (355,360,750,755):
- Click on the customize button.

Configuration Utility (Fn+F1 for the 701):
- Modify Page 1 of 4.

Phoenix Utility (Ctrl+Alt+F11 at a DOS prompt for the 365C/CS/CSD/CD/E/ED):
- Modify Page 2 of 2.
