TP 365,750,755,760 - POST 8603/8611 and keyboard resets
Applicable to: World-Wide
Abstract :
ThinkPad Machine Types: 9545/46/47 & 2625; POST 8603 or 8611 and Keyboard Resets
Symptom :
Full size and space saver external Trackpoint keyboards can cause an 8603 or 8611 POST error during boot or cause a keyboard reset to occur during normal operation. The Reset will cause the NUM, CAPS, and Scroll Lock LEDs to flash on then off. The intermittent condition can occur on all models of the 9546 9547 (760) model systems, 9545 (755) systems and on the 2625 365X model systems.
Problem Isolation Aids :
Ensure the software work around or the hardware cable kit listed in the fix section of this tip is installed before replacing any other FRU parts.
Fix :
A partial work around is now available.
The file for DOS / Windows / Windows 95 is called YPTF$034.EXE
To obtain a copy of this Diskette, DoubleClick here : -
The OS/2 file is called YPTF$035.EXE.

The work around corrects the keyboard reset, but will not correct the intermittent POST error.
NOTE: The software work around is not effective when hot or warm docking is used.
Setting the internal trackpoint to OFF with ThinkPad features will prevent either error condition, but the internal trackpoint will not operate.
A hardware fix will is also available. It will consist of a TrackPoint keyboard adapter cable. The kit is FRU P/N 83H6472.
ThinkPad 760 and 365X Systems:
Plug the Adapter Cable, FRU P/N83H6472, into the keyboard cable connector with the mouse symbol. Plug the other end of the Adapter Cable into the Docking station or Port Replicator mouse port connector (Figure 1). If a ThinkPad is being used as stand-alone, plug the other end of the Adapter Cable into the keyboard / mouse connector cable's mouse port in (Figure 2).
ThinkPad 755 Systems:
Plug the Adapter Cable, FRU P/N 83H6472, into the keyboard cable connector with the keyboard symbol. Plug the other end of the Adapter Cable into the Docking station or Port Replicator keyboard port connector (Figure 1). If a ThinkPad is being used stand-alone, plug the other end of the Adapter Cable into the keyboard / mouse connector cable's keyboard port in (Figure 2).
