Ambra - Re-installing the original software for systems with the WaveStar 32 (ESS 1688 Audiodrive) sound card

How do I restore all the software on my Ambra with a WaveStar 32 (ESS 1688 Audiodrive) sound card?

Answer:
Follow the steps below.

*** ATTENTION ***
If you follow the steps below, you will lose all your data and program files. The hard drive will no longer contain any personal information. If you have important files you wish to keep, please save them before going any further.


You will need the following items to reload this computer:

The Windows 95 start-up disk
The Windows 95 CD
The Windows 95 Certificate of Authenticity
The driver disk for the modem labeled Creatix Polymedia
The driver disk for the sound card labeled Wavestar32
The driver disk labeled video drivers for OS/2, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95

Here are the steps to reload the software.

  1. Insert the Windows 95 start-up disk and start the machine.
  2. When at the A:\> prompt insert the Windows 95 CD.
  3. At the prompt A:\> prompt type: "FORMAT C: /U" and press Enter.
  4. When the format is done it will ask for a volume label, just press Enter.
  5. Now type "D:" or the appropriate letter for your CD-ROM drive and press Enter.
  6. Then type "SETUP" and press Enter. This will start the Windows 95 installation.
  7. It will ask you to perform a routine check on the system. Press Enter to accept.
  8. On the next window click the Next button.
  9. Click on Yes to accept the license agreement.
  10. From the next window, click the Next button.
  11. Accept the directory chosen by clicking on Next.
  12. Select Typical Installation and click Next.
  13. Windows will then ask you for the product identification number. This is on the top of the bar-code on the green Certificate of Authenticity which is with the Windows 95 manual. Once the number has been entered click on Next.
  14. Windows will then ask you to enter your name, once done click on Next.
  15. From the resulting windows click on Next.
  16. At the next window click Next.
  17. Windows will then ask you what you want to install, choose Install the Most Common Components and click the Next button.
  18. It will then ask you for a start-up disk, answer NO and then click on Next.
  19. At the next window, click on Next.
  20. Windows will now want to finish the set-up, so remove the Windows 95 start-up disk and click on Finish.
  21. When Windows starts, set the time zone.
  22. Windows will then ask you to install your printer.
  23. When done Windows will ask you to restart, click OK to restart.


Now to install the modem.

  1. Insert the disk labeled Creatix Polymedia.
  2. Then click on Start, Settings and Control Panel.
  3. In the Control Panel, double-click on the ADD NEW HARDWARE icon.
  4. Click on Next.
  5. At the next window choose NO and then click on Next.
  6. From the list of hardware choose Modem and click on Next.
  7. Then put a checkmark in the box next to 'Don't Detect My Modem, I will select from a list' and then click on Next.
  8. From the next window click on Have Disk then click on OK.
  9. From the list of modems select the second to last one in the list. It should say: Sierra 28.8 PnP Data, Fax Voice Speakerphone Sq 3465. Click on Next.
  10. From the list of ports click on Communications Port COM 2 and click Next.
  11. Then fill in the information for the phone number and location and click on Next.
  12. Then click on Finish.
  13. In the Control Panel click on the System icon.
  14. Then click on the tab called Device Manager.
  15. Then click on the plus sign to the left of modem. Now highlight the Sierra 28.8 PnP Data, fax, voice speakerphone SQ3465 and click on Properties.
  16. Then click on the Resources Tab.
  17. Remove the check mark from Use Automatic Settings.
  18. Set the basic configuration to 'Basic Configuration 0004'.
  19. Click on Interrupt Request to highlight it and then click on change setting. Click on one of the 2 arrows to change the interrupt request to 09. Now click on OK.
  20. From the resulting window click on YES and you will be back in the Device Manager.
  21. Close the Device Manager and you will be back in the Control Panel.


Now for the sound card.

  1. From the Control Panel double-click on the Add New Hardware icon and click on Next.
  2. At the next window click on NO, then click on Next.
  3. From the list of hardware, click on Sound Video and Game Controllers and click on Next.
  4. Then click on Have Disk followed by OK.
  5. From the list choose ESS 1688 Audiodrive and click on OK.
  6. Click on Next.
  7. At the next window click on Finish.
  8. When Windows asks to restart, answer NO.
  9. In the Control Panel double-click on the System icon.
  10. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  11. Click on the plus sign to the left of Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
  12. Highlight ESS 1688 Audiodrive, then click on properties.
  13. Click on the Resources tab.
  14. Click on Change Settings. The first Input/Output should be set to 0220-022F. Change the settings by moving the arrows accordingly and click on OK when done.
  15. Highlight the second Input/Output range and click on Change Settings. Change these settings to 0388-038B by clicking on the arrows and click on OK when done.
  16. Highlight the third Input/Output and change the settings to 0300-0301. Click on OK.
  17. Highlight the Interrupt Request and click on Change Settings, set it to number 10 and click on OK.
  18. Highlight the Direct Memory Access and click on Change Settings. Change it to 01 and click on OK.
  19. Click on OK.
  20. At the Device Manager screen click on OK.
  21. Click on Start, Shutdown and select Restart the Computer and click on YES.
  22. When you are back in Windows you will have sound and the modem installed.


The video drivers

  1. Insert the disk labeled Video Drivers for OS/2, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.
  2. In the Control Panel double-click on the display icon.
  3. Then click on the Settings tab.
  4. Next click on Change Display Type.
  5. Under Adapter Type click on Change.
  6. Click on Have Disk.
  7. In the Copy Manufacturers Files From box type "A:\WIN95" then click OK.
  8. From the resulting window click on OK.
  9. Click on Close and then click on Apply.
  10. Remove the disk from the computer.
  11. Then click on YES to restart the computer.
  12. When the computer restarts, you are done.
