IBM PC300GL (Type 6272, 6282) - Windows NT reverts to VGA if new monitor with incompatible mode detected
Applicable to: World-Wide
SYMPTOM:
If a monitor is replaced on a 6272/6282 running Windows NT 3.51 or Windows NT 4.0 with a different monitor that does not support the current monitor settings, Windows NT will revert to the VGA driver. In this case, the following message will be displayed:
Invalid Display Settings
The currently selected display resolution is invalid.
The default display resolution has been temporarily used by the system.
Use the Display option in the Windows NT Control Panel to select your preferred display resolution.
RESOLUTION:
1. After an "Invalid Display Settings" screen, you will see Windows NT Display Setting screen automatically. Then set your preferred display resolution, color palettes, and refresh frequency
2. Click on Test to run test mode once to try the new settings
3. Exit Display Settings, and shut down Windows NT
4. Restart Windows NT
EXPLANATION:
When the monitor is found during DDC detection, the invalid modes are removed from the list of supported modes. Then Windows NT searches through the list of supported modes, and if it does not find that mode (eg. 1024x768 @85Hz), it will then default back to 640x480, 256-colors.
