Purpose:
The purpose of this ECA is to prevent/correct system failures when a down level version of the PC Card Enabler II option is attached to the ThinkPad.

The repair policy for this ECA is "Fix On Fail".
This ECA is to be implemented World Wide.

Package identification:
Option Packaging for New Level Options:
The latest level of the Option Package will identify the PC Card Enabler II card that should be used with this system. If you have the older level it must be replaced with the Latest Option Level part number described below.

** The latest level options have P/N 05K4820 with a build date March 1999 and the Sequence Number PD2003 on the outside of the single carton.

** The older level options have P/N 05K4820 with a build date older than January 1999 and the Sequence Number of PD2002 on the outside of the single carton.

Any model of 2645 M/T experiencing a hang at boot time when connected to a PC Card Enabler II (Option P/N 05K4820). This only occurs with the Card Enabler II with the FRU P/N 05K4821. The hang can be intermittent .

The FRU P/N is located on the label on the bottom of the Card Enabler II.

Failure Mode:
The LCD will become totally black or all black with the cursor in the top left corner not blinking.

Note:
The hang happens BEFORE the operating system loads (example: prior to the words "Starting Windows 95" etc).

There is no hang when the system unit is booted stand alone (off of the SelectaBase 600 with Card Enabler II).

Detail:
Short Term Work-around:
The user can power on and off till the unit becomes operational (no damage to the system unit will occur). Normally 2-3 power off/on's will allow the unit to be used.

Note: The user should wait 5 seconds after they power off the machine before they power on the machine again.

Repair Action:
Replace Card Enabler II FRU PN 05K4851 with the new CRU PN 02K8982. This part is a Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) part and can be ordered directly from IBM.

Notes:
This ECA will expire 05/31/00. Order all FRU parts locally, and record Time & Materials to service code 33, ECA002 and OTHER OFFICE 990.

This ECA is Non-Billable as long as it is Active.

IBM PSS CE's should record all time and parts to Service Code 33, (2645) ECA002, Other Office 990.
