Aptiva/IBM IntelliStation/IBM PC - Understanding OS/2 Error Messages

Applicable to: United States

This document is for Aptiva and IBM PC/IBM IntelliStation machines that are using OS/2:
There are two types of OS/2 error messages, SYSxxxx and REXxxxx. They are usually seven characters long with a three-character alphabetic prefix and a four-character numeric suffix. You can obtain help on these error messages by typing HELP SYSxxxx or HELP REXxxxx at an OS/2 command line (where xxxx represents some numeric value). The help contains an explanation for possible causes and one or more corrective actions to take.

Trap errors correspond to SYS errors beginning with Trap 0000 which is equivalent to SYS1930. They range from 0000-0010 and 000A - 000F. Therefore you can obtain online help for all 17 Trap errors using the HELP command.

A Trap is the method the processor uses to inform the operating system that an unacceptable condition has been detected. Trap errors can be caused by both software and hardware. An example of what you might see on the screen is shown below:

"The system detected an internal processing error at location ##0160:fff5fbd5 - 000D: 9bd5.60000,9084"

The data registers displayed on the screen by OS/2 do not correspond to an actual failing device or address and are not valid for hardware problem determination. What is valid is the alphabetic or numeric character following three zeros and preceding a colon. In this example, we should begin troubleshooting a Trap D or SYS1943.
