PS/1 - How To Get The Mouse to Work with DOS 5.0

Applicable to: United States

The mouse driver will need to be installed in order to have mouse support with IBM DOS 5.0. Follow the procedure below to install the mouse driver.

1. From the DOS Shell, press <Shift>+<F9> to get to the DOS prompt.

2. Place the DOS 5.0 Installation Diskette #3 in the A: drive.

NOTE: C:\DOS is a representation of a DOS PROMPT... DO NOT TYPE THAT WHICH IS IN BOLD TYPE.

3. At the DOS prompt, type 'C:\DOS>EXPAND A:MOUSE.CO_ C:\DOS\MOUSE.COM' and the press <ENTER>.

NOTE: The only spaces in the above command are after the word 'Expand' and the underscore (_).

4. At the next prompt type 'C:\DOS>EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT' and then press <ENTER>.

5. The Edit screen will appear and the AUTOEXEC.BAT file will be shown. Move the cursor to the beginning of the first line and press the Enter key. This will create a empty line at the beginning of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. In the empty line add the following statement:

LH C:\DOS\MOUSE.COM

Note: the LH command will try to load the MOUSE.COM driver into upper memory. If not enough upper memory is available then the driver will automatically be loading into conventual memory.

6. Under the 'File' menu, select 'Save' to save the changes. Then, under the 'File' menu select 'Exit' to exit the Edit screen.

7. Remove the IBM 5.0 Installation Diskette #3 from the A: drive. Reboot the system by pressing <CTRL>+<ALT>+<DEL>. A statement will appear noting that the mouse driver was installed.
