Record number: H163793 Device: D/T6561 Model: M Hit count: UHC00000 Success count: USC0000 Publication code: PC50 Tip key: Date created: O98/05/28 Date last altered: A98/05/28 Owning B.U.: USA Abstract: INTERMITTENT "NO POWER" CONDITION IN 4X4 DESKTOP SYSTEMS SYMPTOM: IBM PC300GL and IBM PC300PL systems may exhibit an inter- mittent "no power" condition in systems manufactured with a Western Digital 2.5GB or 4.2GB hard file and a Delta power supply. PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS: The intermittent failure to power on may be seen by the user as a complete lack of power to the system unit. The power-on LED does not turn on, nor does the hardfile LED. When the system enters into this condition, the AC line cord must be removed, then reinserted to the AC receptacle to reattempt a power-on cycle. The failure symptom may become a solid failure if a second Western Digital 2.5GB or 4.2GB hardfile is added to the system configuration. This tip applies to the following Series and Machine Types: IBM PC300GL Series 6561 Systems IBM PC300PL Series 6562 Systems IBM PC300PL Series 6862 Systems The failure symptom is not likely to occur in any of the systems listed above if: a) The system contains an ISA adapter of any type. b) The system contains a PCI adapter of any type. c) The system has PCI Ethernet capability integrated into the system board. Tower versions of the PC300GL (6591) and PC300PL (6592/6892) are not affected. FIX: In systems that meet the above criteria, replace the power supply with the appropriate FRU part number: IBM PC300GL Series 6561 systems P/N01K9846 IBM PC300PL Series 6562 systems P/N12J5991 IBM PC300PL Series 6862 systems P/N01K9846 NOTE: Power supplies manufactured by Astec and API under these part numbers DO NOT exhibit this "no power" condition when used with Western Digital hardfiles. As a temporary method of recovering from the "no power" condition, the user can remove the AC line cord and re-plug it to re-attempt the power-on cycle. Once the system powers on, it will function normally. SAS KEYWORDS: PSY2PWR CDT CDTPWR D/T6561 D/T6562 D/T6862 DEAD SYSTEM 6561 6562 6862 UNCLASSIFIED
