NVIDIA NV44 BIOS Releases NV44 Product Family: BIOS Release Notes provides information about NVIDIA video BIOS releases for the Quadro NVS 285. This chapter points to the latest Quadro NVS 285 information and discusses NVIDIA BIOS release numbering, VGA and VESA support. 1.1 NVIDIA BIOS Release Numbers Current BIOSrelease numbers contain five version numbers grouped in the following format: C.cc.mm.ee.oo Where C—Major is the core version The major core version indicates the core version from which the BIOS is generated. A change in this number indicates a major architectural change to the BIOS. NVIDIA has these major core versions: • 1 (NV03, NV3T) • 2 (NV04, NV05, NV10, NV15) • 3 (NV05, NV10, NV11, NV15, NV20) • 4 (NV17, NV18, NV25, NV28, NV3x) • 5 (NV4x) cc—Chip version The chip version indicates the chipset familyand has one of these values: • 04 (RIVA TNT) • 05 (TNT2and Vanta families) • 10 (GeForce 256, Quadro) • 11 (GeForce2 MX, GeForce2 Go, Quadro2 MXR) • 15 (GeForce2 Ultra, GeForce2 Pro, Quadro2 Pro, GeForce2 Ti) • 17 (GeForce4 MX 4xx, Quadro4 5xxXGL, Quadro4 xxxNVS) • 18 (GeForce4 MX 440) • 1A (nForce) • 1F (nForce2) • 20 (GeForce3, GeForce3 Ti xxx, Quadro DCC) • 25 (GeForce4 Ti 4xxx, Quadro4 7xxXGL, Quadro4 9xxXGL) • 28 (GeForce4 Ti 42xx, GeForce4 Ti 48xx) • 30 (GeForce FX 5800) • 31 (GeForce FX 5600) • 34 (GeForce FX 5200) • 35 (GeForce FX 5900) • 36 (GeForce FX 5700) • 38 (GeForce FX 5950 Ultra) • 40/42 (GeForce 6800) • 41 (Quadro FX 1400) • 43 (GeForce 6600) • 44/44A (GeForce 6200) • 45 (Quadro FX 3400) mm—Minor version The meaning of the minor version is determined by the major core version. • Core 5 and later - The minor version categorizes the release status of the BIOS. This value should be 02, which indicates an officially released NVIDIA BIOS. ee—Engineering version The engineering version indicates minor changes to the BIOS, such as register tweaks and minor bug fixes. oo—OEM version OEM version numbers have been assigned to BIOS releases since TNT2 to track customizations for OEMs and to provide unique numbers for OEM bills of materials (BOMs). 1.2 BIOS VGA Support and VESA Modes The latest NVIDIA BIOS releases support the IBM VGA standard 7-bit modes and VESA modes. VGA Modes - The supported VGA modes: Mode Colors Resolution Memory 00/01 16 40x25 Text (As 0+/1+ 400 line modes) 02/03 16 80x25 Text (As 2+/3+ 400 line modes) 04/05 4 320x200 2-bit Planar 06 2 640x200 1-bit Planar 07 Mono 80x25 Text 0D 16 320x200 4-bit Planar 0E 16 640x200 4-bit Planar 0F Mono 640x350 1-bit Planar (Uses white text) 10 16 640x350 4-bit Planar 11 2 640x480 2-bit Planar 12 16 640x480 4- 13 256 320x200 8- VESA Modes VESA Colors Resolution Memory 100h 256 640x400 8-bit Packed 101h 256 640x480 8-bit Packed 102h 16 800x600 4-bit Planar 103h 256 800x600 8-bit Packed 104h 16 1024x768 4-bit Planar 105h 256 1024x768 8-bit Packed 106h 16 1280x1024 4-bit Planar 107h 256 1280x1024 8-bit Packed 108h 16 80x60 Text 109h 16 132x25 Text 10Ah 16 132x43 Text 10Bh 16 132x50 Text 10Ch 16 132x60 Text 10Eh 64K 320x200 16-bit Packed 10Fh 1.6M 320x200 32-bit Packed 111h 64K 640x480 16-bit Packed 112h 1.6M 640x480 32-bit Packed 114h 64K 800x600 16-bit Packed 115h 1.6M 800x600 32-bit Packed 117h 64K 1024x768 16-bit Packed 118h 1.6M 1024x768 32-bit Packed 11Ah 64K 1280x1024 16-bit Packed 130h 256 320x200 8-bit Packed 131h 256 320x400 8-bit Packed 132h 64K 320x400 16-bit Packed 133h 1.6M 320x400 32-bit Packed 134h 256 320x240 8-bit Packed 135h 64K 320x240 16-bit Packed 136h 1.6M 320x240 32-bit Packed 13Dh 64K 640x400 16-bit Packed 13Eh 1.6M 640x400 32-bit Packed 145h 256 1600x1200 8-bit Packed 146h 64K 1600x1200 16-bit Packed 1.3 Known NV44 BIOS Limitations This section describes problems that either cannot or will not be fixed by NVIDIA. Usually, the source of the problem is beyond the control of NVIDIA. The list of problems follows: • “AMIDiag 6.0 VESA Video Memory Test Failure” Running the VESA Video Memory Test in AMIDiagnostic 6.0 generates the following error message: “VESAvideo memory test failed.” This occurs because AMIDiagnostic is using the total video memory to calculate the number of 64KB pages to test. Instead, the program should use GetVesaModeInfo() to find the number of available pages to test. The number of available pages is less than the calculated total because a portion of the video memory is write protected. • “Vesatest Reports Mode 03H Does Not Work” on page 5 Vesatest reports that the 0000h and 0002h modes of function 03H fail, regardless of the output device. This is caused by the Vesatest application looking for old IBM-compatible mode tables, which are not supported in the BIOS for Core 4 products, such as NV17. 2. BIOS Releases for the Quadro NVS 285 Version 5.44.02.32.03 - Revised to correct SSDIDs of the Quadro NVS 285 Version 5.44.02.32.15 - Revised to have the control panel show local frame buffer memory on card of 64MB, not turbo cache virtual memory of 256MB.
