Overview 1.1 New Features Supported with this Release: - 2GB DIMM support for the new 8842-42(x) and 8842-4T(x) JS20 Blades. - Power management in a NEBS operating environment for the new 8842-4Tx JS20 Blade. New Message Provided with this Release: - If a customer attempts to activate SMS menus (not supported with Js20), the following message will be displayed during the boot process: "SMS menus are not supported on JS20" This version of Firmware can be used with all models of the JS20 Blade. The 8842-42(X) Js20 Blade is installed in a BladeCenter. The 8842-4T(X) Js20 Blade is installed in a BladeCenter - T (Telco). 1.2 Key Dependency: Version BQ8T22A of the Integrated Systems Management Processor (i.e. H8 Service Processor) should be installed and used with this version of Firmware (FW05131140 or 2b405_131). Unpredictable results may be experienced if a different version of the H8 service processor is installed. This version of the SP is available from the IBM Support Web Site (refer to item 3). 2. Change History 07/08/2005: GA2 Update 2 Release (FW Version: FW05131140 or 2b405_131,Image Name: JS2FW508C.IMG) Provides support for the following new features: - 2GB DIMMs with the new 8842-42(x) and 8842-4T(x) Js20 Blade models - Power management in a NEBS operating environment for the new 8842-4T(x) Js20 Blade. 11/18/2004: GA2 Update 1 Release (FW Version: FW04430130 or 2b304_430, Image Name: JS2FW443A.IMG) Provides a code fix for the "update -c" commit function. Without this update, a customer may experience a fail when committing a Firmware image from the TEMP to PERM side. 10/29/2004: GA2 Release (FW Version: FW04390130 or 2b304_390, Image Name: JS2FW439A.IMG) Provides support for the new JS20+ blade and a fix for Fibre Channel boot support. Please note, at a minimum, Version v0104030301 (release date: 2004/10/18) of Fibre Channel adapter firmware is required for Fibre Channel boot support. Please refer to item 8 in this README for additional information on the Fibre Channel boot support fix. 08/27/2004: GA1 Update 2 Release (FW Version: FW04310120 or 2b204_310, Image Name: JS1FW430C.IMG) Provides support for AIX 5.2H and Fibre Channel Boot with the IBM eServer Blade Center JS20 Fibre Channel Expansion Card (Option PN 73P6112). 06/24/2004: GA1 Update 1 Release (FW Version: bFW0419000, Image Name: JS1FW419A.IMG) Included fixes and changes for: E21C boot error, VPD, DIMM LED False indicator, and minor error logging improvements. 06/04/2004: Initial GA1 Release (FW Version: bFW4013000, Image Name: JS1FW408F.IMG) 3. Supported Blade Center and / or JS20 Blade code updates (in addition to this Firmware) can also be downloaded from the IBM web site. 4. The following documents provide information on the JS20 Blade Product: - Blade Center JS20 Type 8842 Installation and User's Guide - BladeCenter JS20 Type 8842 Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide - Technical Update (August 2004) - IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20 The Technical Update provides information on fibre channel boot support available with GA1 Update 2. 5. Version BQ8T22A of the Integrated Systems Management Processor (i.e. H8 Service Processor) should be installed and used with this version of Firmware (FW05131140 or 2b405_131). Unpredictable results may be experienced if a different version of the H8 service processor is installed. This version of the SP is available from the IBM Support Web Site (refer to item 3). 6. Firmware installation, flash update, commit, recovery and verification instructions are defined in Chapter 7 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual. - Linux customers should refer to the "Update and manage system flash using Linux service aids" section for detail procedures / steps to be performed. - AIX customers should refer to the "Update and manage system flash using AIX diagnostics" section for detail procedures / steps to be performed. 7. Firmware version numbers for this release can be displayed from the Management Module, with a Linux Operating System command and from the AIX Diagnostics GUI. - The FW version number that will be displayed by the Management Module under the BIOS category is 2b405_131. - The FW version number that will be returned by a Linux OS command is FW05131140. - The FW version number that will be displayed by the AIX Diagnostic GUI is 2b405_131. Please refer to the preceding item #6 for documentation pointers on how to perform Linux and AIX steps to determine FW version information. 8. System Management Services (SMS) menus are not supported with Js20. The following message will be displayed if a customer attempts to activate SMS during the boot process: "SMS menus are not supported on JS20" 9. If you are migrating from the GA1 Update 1 version of Firmware (version bFW0419000, version date 05/04/2004) to the this GA2 release with the Linux OS, error code 25A80001 will be displayed during reboot after the new FW image is flashed. This message code is informational. It indicates that NVRAM has been reinitialized when the new version of firmware was installed. This is expected behavior. This is not an error. 10. If you are booting with the IBM eServer Blade Center JS20 Fibre Channel Expansion Card (Option PN 73P6112), you must also have version v0105030301 (release date: 2004/10/19) or a later version of fcode installed on the adapter. At a minimum, version v0105030301 of adapter firmware is a co-requirement for boot support. The latest version of adapter firmware is available from the IBM Support Web Site (refer to item 3). 11.
