Please refer to the IBM Support Web Site at http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/ for the current versions of JS20 product documentation and any late breaking product news. Supported Blade Center and / or JS20 Blade code updates (in addition to this Firmware) can also be downloaded from the IBM web site. 3. The following documents provide information on the JS20 Blade Product: - Blade Center JS20 8842 Installation and User's Guide - Blade Center JS20 8842 Installation and User's Guide, Supplement (latest version) - Blade Center JS20 8842 Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide The Installation and User's Guide Supplement has information on new features and functions provided with GA1 Update 2. A revised Hardware Maintenance Manual and Troubleshooting Guide has also been provided with this update. As noted in item 2, these documents are available for download at the IBM Support Web Site. 4. Version 1.0 BQ8T16A of the Integrated Systems Management Processor (i.e. H8 Service Processor) should be installed and used with this version of Firmware (FW04310120). Unpredictable results may be experienced if a different version of the H8 service processor is installed. This version of the SP is available from the IBM Support Web Site (refer to item 2). 5. FW Installation, Flash Update, Commit and Reject Instructions for the Linux Operating System are as follows: 1). Flashing is performed by a standard Linux Utility. If you have not installed the ppc64 Linux utilities, please install them from the following WEB Link: https://techsupport.services.ibm.com/server/Linux_on_pSeries/ServiceAids.html The "update_flash" utility is used to flash Firmware. 2). Obtain the current Firmware image file from http://www.ibm.com/pc/support 3). Perform Update Firmware using the Linux command: update_flash -f This will flash the Firmware image to the TEMP side and reboot the system. 4). After the system reboots successfully and once you are satisfied with the functionality of the new image, you MUST commit the update using the following Linux command: update_flash -c This will copy the image from the TEMP to the PERM side -- TEMP - Normal Boot, PERM - Backup boot bank OR, If you booted to the PERM side for some unexpected reason and you desire to replace the image on the TEMP side, you may reject the new Firmware image on the TEMP side. You must have booted from the PERM side to perform this function. With the reject option, the FW image on the PERM side is copied to the TEMP side. Please refer to the "Recovering the System Firmware Code" Section of the Blade Center JS20 8842 Installation and User's Guide for additional details. Perform the following command to reject the TEMP side image: update_flash -r 6. If you are migrating from the GA1 Update 1 version of Firmware (version bFW0419000, version date 05/04/2004) to the this GA1 Update 2 release with the Linux OS, error code 25A80001 will be displayed during reboot after the new FW image is flashed (refer to the preceding item 5, step 3). This message code is informational. It indicates that NVRAM has been reinitialized when the new version of firmware was installed. This is expected behavior. This is not an error. 7. FW Installation, Flash Update, Commit and Reject Instructions for the AIX Operating System are as follows: 1). Please refer to the Blade Center JS20 8842 Hardware Maintenance and Troubleshooting Guide. Specifics for installing and flashing firmware are defined in the "Update and Manage System Flash" sections of this document. 2). Please refer to the "Recovering the Primary Image" Section of the Blade Center JS20 8842 Hardware Maintenance and Troubleshooting Guide for additional details. Perform the following command to reject the TEMP side image: update_flash -r 8. Firmware version and boot information can be displayed with the Linux SUSE OS. After performing a flash update of the Firmware, the firmware version number and date of the image you booted (either TEMP or PERM side image) are displayed in the BIOS category at the Management Module (MM). A Linux command can also be used to display an indicator to highlight the side you booted from and firmware version information for both the TEMP and PERM sides. 1).To display firmware version information, enter the following Linux command: lsprop /proc/device-tree/openprom/*bank* (include the "*" characters) As an example, this will return: /proc/device-tree/openprom/ibm,fw-bank "T" /proc/device-tree/openprom/ibm,fw-temp-bank "FW04310120, 17:16:09, 07/26/2004" /proc/device-tree/openprom/ibm,fw-perm-bank "FW04310120, 17:16:09, 07/26/2004"" The value for ibm,fw-bank indicates what side you booted from (T for TEMP, P for PERM). The value for ibm,fw-temp-bank denotes the firmware version, date and time stamp of firmware on the TEMP side. The value for ibm,fw-perm-bank indicates the firmware version, date and time stamp of firmware on the PERM side. 9. Firmware version and boot information can be displayed with the AIX OS. After performing a flash update of the Firmware, the firmware version number and date of the image you booted are displayed in the BIOS category at the Management Module (MM). AIX commands and process steps can be performed to display firmware boot and version information for both the TEMP and PERM sides and information for the currently executing version of firmware. To display firmware version information, perform the following AIX commands and steps: 1). From the root directory, determine the directory path of the the command dmpdt_chrp which dumps the device tree. Enter the following: find . -name dmpdt_chrp -print As an example, the system may return ./usr/bib/boot/bin 2). Display the device tree and copy it to a file, for example dmpdt_chrp_out. Enter the following: (directory path)/dmpdt_chrp | tee dmpdt_chrp_out 3). Open the file with an editor (e.g. vi) and search for "openprom". As an example, this will return: /openprom name 6f70656e 70726f6d 00 [openprom........] ibm,fw-vernum_encoded 46573034 33313031 323000 [FW04310120......] model 49424d2c 46573034 33313031 323000 [IBM,FW04310120..] ....... ibm,fw-bank 5400 [T...............] ibm,fw-temp-bank 46573034 33313031 32302c20 31373a31 [FW04310120, 17:1] 363a3039 2c203037 2f32362f 32303034 [6:09, 07/26/2004] 00 [................] ibm,fw-perm-bank 46573034 33313031 32302c20 31373a31 [FW04310120, 17:1] 363a3039 2c203037 2f32362f 32303034 [6:09, 07/26/2004] In this example,ibm,fw-vernum_encoded value [FW04310120......] is the version of firmware that is being executed by the system. The value for ibm,fw-bank indicates what side you booted from (T for TEMP, P for PERM). The value for ibm,fw-temp-bank indicates the firmware version, date and time stamp of firmware on the TEMP side. The value for ibm,fw-perm-bank identifies the firmware version, date and time stamp of firmware on the PERM side. 10.
