File Name: README.TXT IBM IPMI Automatic Server Restart (ASR) software for Linux Version 1.04 CONTENTS -------- 1.0 Overview 2.0 Change History 3.0 IPMI ASR Application Installation Instructions 4.0 Web Sites and Support Phone Number 5.0 Trademarks and Notices 6.0 Disclaimer 1.0 Overview ------------- Note: This README.TXT file is associated with the following RPM file: - ibmipmiasm-x.xx-y.src.rpm where x.xx is the version and y is the build of the rpm that you are installing. Note: This RPM file will build a binary RPM of the Automatic Server Restart (ASR) software on specific Intel-based IBM servers that contain an IPMI-compliant Baseboard Management Controller (BMC). Please consult IBM's support website (Section 4 below) to determine if this ASR software is supported on your server. You will also find a listing of supported operating systems on this same website. Note: 3rd party IPMI drivers or ASR software will interfere with the operation of this ASR software package. 2.0 Change History ------------------- version 1.04 - WAP105A fixed a problem that caused ASR to fail to build on older distributions of Linux version 1.03 - WAP104A fixed a problem that caused ASR to fail to start from the initscript on RHEL4 version 1.02 - WAP103A removed GPL statement from the file description version 1.01 - WAP102A removed detecting the presence of device driver; fixed a security issue; updated the readme instructions for installing ASR app version 1.00 - WAP101A Initial release 3.0 IPMI ASR Application Installation Instructions -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.1 Installing the ibmipmiasr RPM Before installing this RPM, please make sure your server has the correct IPMI device driver installed and the correct IBM Mapping Layer Software installed before attempting to install this ASR package. Please consult IBM's support website (Section 4 below) to determine which IPMI driver and Mapping Layer software to install on your server. The system that the source rpm file is to be run on must have Linux development/build capability and be properly configured for your hardware. The following steps must be executed in order to build and install the IPMI ASR software. NOTE: If this is an upgrade to an existing version of Automatic Server Restart software, then the previously installed ASR software package must first be removed. Depending upon your system's configuration, you may see messages about missing files when running the "rpm -e" commands. You may safely ignore those messages. Type the following command at a shell prompt to remove the old software source and binaries: rpm -e ibmipmiasr To install the rpm issue the following commands: rpmbuild --rebuild ibmipmiasr-x.xx-y.src.rpm cd /usr/src/[PACKAGE DIR]/RPMS/[ARCH] rpm -ivh ibmsp6a-x.xx-y.[ARCH].rpm where x.xx is the version and y is the build of the rpm that you are installing, [PACKAGE DIR] is the distribution-specific name of the RPM build directory (usually "redhat" or "packages"), and [ARCH] is the architecture of the kernel in use ( i386, i586 or x86_64). For example, to install the rpm on an x86_64 SuSE OS, issue the following commands: rpmbuild --rebuild ibmipmiasr-x.xx-y.src.rpm cd /usr/src/packages/RPMS/x86_64 rpm -ivh ibmipmiasr-x.xx-y.x86_64.rpm NOTE: After the installation is complete, please check the file /var/log/messsage. This ASR application should work properly if you see the message like "..IBM IPMI ASR application loaded" in the /var/log/message file. 3.2 Un-installing the ibmipmiasr RPM. To uninstall the binary rpm, execute the following command: rpm -e ibmipmiasr RPM will unload the ASR application, and remove all ibmipmiasr-related files from your system. It is recommended that you uninstall the application with the -e option (as shown above) before installing a new version, rather than upgrading with RPM's upgrade (-U) switch. 3.3 Utility Programs. There are two useful utility programs installed by the RPM, but you must have root privilege to run these utilities. ibmipmiasrup is a small script that loads ibmipmiasr.o. Note that this module will not load if your system does not have the supported hardware. ibmasrdown unloads the modules. 4.0 WEB Sites and Support Phone Number --------------------------------------- 4.1 IBM Support Web Site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/support 4.2 IBM Marketing eServer xSeries Web Site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/eserver/xseries 4.3 If you have any questions about this update, or problems applying the update go to the following Help Center World Telephone Numbers URL: http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/YAST-3P2QYL.html 5.0 Trademarks and Notices --------------------------- The following terms are trademarks of the Red Hat Corporation in the United States or other countries or both: Red Hat The following terms are trademarks of SuSE, Inc. in the United States and SuSE AG in Germany or other countries: SuSE The following terms are trademarks of Linus Torvalds in the United States or other countries or both: Linux 6.0 Disclaimer --------------- 6.1 THIS DOCUMENT IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND.
