If the EXP100 ESM firmware in your setup is of 953x or earlier, you must schedule downtime to upgrade the EXP100 ESM firmware from 953x to 9554 followed by the controller firmware upgrade to support the 9554 ESM firmware first. Then, the ESM firmware can be upgraded to 9565 version. Please refer to the latest version of the IBM System Storage DS4000/FAStT EXP100 Expansion Unit Installation, User's and Maintenance Guide for an overview of different released EXP100 ESM firmware versions and their capability with each other. Note: If the EXP100 ESM firmware is 953x or earlier, all IOs to the FAStT storage server must be stopped while the ESM firmware is downloaded to the EXP100 ESMs. In addition, clustering services such as Microsoft MSCS must also be stopped if the cluster disks and quorum disks are defined using the logical drives in the EXP100 enclosures whose ESMs are being updated with new firmware. Furthermore, the DS4000/FAStT controller firmware must be at version 05.41.1x.xx in order to upgrade the EXP100 ESM firmware from version 953x and earlier to version 9554. Once the ESM firmware has been upgraded to version 9554, it will not be possible to downgrade it back to version 953A and earlier. In addition, the FAStT100 storage server will not be able to upgrade the EXP100 ESM firmware from version 953x and earlier to version 955x or later. DO NOT upgrade your EXP100 ESM firmware until you read the upgrade instructions provided in Appendix A of the IBM System Storage DS4000/FAStT EXP100 Expansion Unit Installation, User's and Maintenance Guide (P/N GC26-7694-01). ======================================================================= 1.2 Enhancements ----------------- This ESM firmware version 9565 must be used in conjunction with the controller firmware version 06.12.16.00 or higher (DS4100 - all models, DS4300 - Standard and Turbo models, DS4400 - all models and DS4500 - all models) or 06.15.20.xx (DS4800 - all models) to provide support the new 400G SATA drive options and CRUs (P/Ns 39M4570 and 39M4575, respectively) in addition to the new 250G SATA drive CRUs (P/N 40K6837.) This new 250G SATA drive CRU is functionally equivalent to the previously-released CRUs (P/N 90P1349). ====================================================================== 1.3 Level Recommendation and Prerequisites for the update ----------------------------------------------------------- Prerequisites: ---------------- This version of the ESM firmware requires the existing EXP100 ESM firmware be at version 9554 or higher. It can not be used to upgrade EXP100 ESMs with ESM firmware version 953x or earlier. The ESM firmware must be upgraded to version 9554 first before it can be upgraded to version 9565. (Also see section 1.1 Limitations above.) ESM firmware release level is as follows ------------------------------------------- - 9565 1. esm9565.dl Note: This version of the ESM firmware requires the existing EXP100 ESM firmware be at version 9554 or higher. It can not be used to upgrade EXP100 ESMs with ESM firmware version 953x or earlier. Refer to the IBM System Storage™ Disk Storage Systems Technical Support web site for the latest released code levels. http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/support/disk/ ======================================================================= 2.0 Installation and Setup Instructions ----------------------------------------- ======================================================================= 2.1 Installation ----------------- IMPORTANT: 1. If the current version of the EXP100 ESM firmware is 953X or earlier. all IOs to the DS4000/FAStT storage server must be stopped while the ESM firmware is downloaded to the EXP100 ESMs. In addition, clustering services such as Microsoft MSCS must also be stopped if the cluster disks and quorum disks are defined using the logical drives in the EXP100 enclosures whose ESMs are being updated with new firmware. 2. If the current version of the EXP100 ESM firmware is 953X or earlier, DO NOT upgrade ESM firmware until you read the upgrade instructions provided in Appendix A of the IBM System Storage DS4000/FAStT EXP100 Expansion Unit Installation and User's Guide (P/N GC26-7694-01). You must upgrade to the ESM firmware version 9554 first before you can upgrade the ESMs to firmware version 9565. DS4000/FAStT EXP100 drive expansion ESM firmware is downloaded via a menu option in the DS4000/FAStT Storage Manager 9 Client program. Please refer to the IBM DS4000/FAStT Storage Manager version 9.1x Installation and Support Guides appropriate to your operating systems for instructions to install and start the DS4000/FAStT Storage Manager 9 Client program. To download drive expansion ESM firmware, do the following: a. Open the Subsystem Management window. b. Click Advanced => Download => Environmental(ESM) Card Firmware. Follow the online instructions to download the ESM firmware (esm9565.dl) file. If you select only one EXP100 enclosure for ESM firmware download at a time, you can download ESM firmware while the server conducts I/O activity. However, IBM recommends that you suspend all I/O activity to perform firmware upgrades. You must suspend all I/O activity while ESM firmware downloads if you select multiple enclosures for downloading ESM firmware in the Select Enclosure to download window. Note: When you specify the file name of the ESM firmware file to download, you might need to select All Files in the Files of type pull-down menu to display the correct file name for the ESM firmware file. If you do, then a warning window opens. Click OK when the warning window opens to continue. Note: After the ESM firmware is updated, consider checking the IBM System Storage™ Disk Storage Systems Technical Support web site for the latest released SATA hard drive firmware and the FAStT storage server controller firmware and NVSRAM files. 3. If the installed controller firmware version is the same as the one posted in the DS4000 support web site, you must reload the controller firmware package to the controller to properly activate the ESM firmware. If the installed controller firmware version is earlier than the one posted in the DS4000 support web site, you must install the newer controller firmware version to enable the new features/functions that are in this ESM firmware version. ======================================================================= 2.2 Helpful Hints ------------------ 1. The ideal configuration for SATA drives is one drive in each EXP per array, one logical drive per array and one OS disk partition per logical drive. This configuration minimizes the random head movements that increase stress on the SATA drives. As the number of drive locations to which the heads have to move increases, application performance and drive reliability may be impacted. If more logical drives are configured , but not all of them used simultaneously, some of the randomness can be avoided. SATA drives are best used for long sequential reads and writes. 2. It is recommended to have at least 1 hot-spare defined per EXP100 enclosure. ======================================================================= 3.0 Configuration Information ----------------------------- 3.1 Configuration Settings -------------------------- N/A ======================================================================= 3.2 Unsupported configurations ------------------------------ N/A ======================================================================= 4.0 Unattended Mode --------------------- N/A ======================================================================= 5.0 WEB Sites and Support Phone Number ---------------------------------------- 5.1 IBM System Storage™ Disk Storage Systems Technical Support web site: http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/support/disk/ 5.2 IBM System Storage™ Marketing Web Site: http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/disk 5.3 If you have any questions about this update, or problem applying the update go to the following HelpCenter World Telephone Numbers URL: http://www.ibm.com/planetwide IMPORTANT: You should download the latest version of the DS4000 Storage Manager host software, the DS4000 storage subsystem controller firmware, the DS4000 drive expansion enclosure ESM firmware and the drive firmware at the time of the initial installation and when product updates become available.
