It will not affect any device drivers. 1.1 To use this diskette, perform the following steps: a). Make sure BIOS version 1.04, or later, is installed. b). Insert this diskette into the diskette drive and restart the system. If your system does not boot from the diskette, use POST/BIOS setup to configure the diskette drive as a boot device. Please refer to the Server Library that was included with your system for additional information. c). After your system boots, the main option menu will appear on the screen. The main option menu contains two options. Type the number of the menu item that you want to perform and press Enter. d). When you are finished using the utility, select "Exit" menu item from the main menu and press Enter. e). When prompted, remove the diskette from the diskette drive and press Enter to restart your system. 1.2 Limitations If there is an error in loading the Integrated System Management Processor software, retry loading the software by repeating the instructions in section 1.1. 1.3 Enhancements 1.4. Level of Recommendations and Prerequisites for the update: - BIOS version 1.04, or later, must be installed prior to installing this ISMP firmware update. - A full tape backup should be completed and verified prior to running this, or any other system upgrade. - RAID configuration should be saved to a diskette: see the "Hardware Maintenance Manual" for more details. 1.5 Dependencies: - none 2.0 Change History ______________________________________ Integrated System Management Version 1.05 - Increased Cooling fan minimum speeds to compensate for higher cooling requirements on nocona processors and 2 gig dimms. - Increase thermal thresholds for nocona processors. Integrated System Management Version 1.04 - Removed CPU mismatch detection, BIOS 1.04 now does it - Corrected DC good fault defect Integrated System Management Version 1.03 - Corrected CPU stepping level mismatch detection Integrated System Management Version 1.02 - CPU LEDs do not turn off after I-Error failure - Correct problems with Diags System Management test - VRM failure leds do not disappear on reboot if VRM has not been replaced - System recovers from Soft Shutdown Integrated System Management Version 1.01 - removed recovery alerts over ASF when system boots Integrated System Management Version 1.00 - Original Release 3.0 Installing and Setup Instructions ______________________________________ To install the firmware on this diskette, perform the following steps: 3.1 Make sure BIOS version 1.04, or later, is installed. 3.2 Make sure your system is powered down. 3.3 Insert the diskette in the diskette drive. 3.4 Power on your system to boot from diskette drive. If your system does not boot from the diskette, use POST/BIOS setup utility to configure the diskette drive as a boot device. 3.5 From the main option menu, select "Update System Management Processor". 3.6 When the update completes, remove the diskette from the drive and press Enter to restart the system. 4.0 Unattended Mode _______________________ This update utility does not support unattended installations but there are other ways to incorporate unattended installations of this code. Check 'Advanced users' section immediately below. Check the UpdateXpress CD for availability of unattended installs of this firmware. (The UpdateXpress CD is downloadable from http://www.ibm.com (use the search function to find " UpdateXpress"). 4.1 Advanced users: The contents of this diskette can be used to support unattended installations. Note: Using this utility in an unattended mode will unconditionally flash the server with the firmware from this update. The server will be flashed regardless of whether the currently installed firmware is older or newer than the firmware on this update. To perform an unattended installation, copy flash2.exe and all of the .BIN files from this diskette to a single directory on your drive. Boot the server to DOS and change the directory to the directory where you have copied these files. At the DOS prompt type: flash2 /u /e 5.0 WEB Sites and Support Phone Number __________________________________________ 5.1 IBM Support Web Site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/support 5.2 IBM eserver xSeries Web Site: http://www.ibm.com/eserver/xseries 5.3 If you have any questions about this update, or problems applying the update, go to the following Help Center World Telephone Numbers and URL: http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/YAST-3P2QYL.html. 6.0. Appendix A: Package Specific Installation Instruction This update is packaged as a self-extracting Package for the web (PFW). To unpack, this update requires that your TEMP environment variable be set to a path with read/write access. You must be logged in as an administrator. The command-line syntax for Package-For-The-Web Firmware update package is: Package.exe [-s] [-a [-s] | [-r] | [-c] | [-x directory] | [-xd] | [-w] | [-?] ] [-s] This initial -s tells the Package-For-The-Web software to install silently and will not prompt if files need to be over-written in the %temp% directory. [-a] Tells the Package-For-The-Web software to pass all subsequent commands to the install package (i.e. the update). [-s] The second -s option indicates to run the update silently and unattended. For firmware updates the update is scheduled to run on the next reboot. An immediate reboot can be forced with the -r option. [-r] Schedule the update (can be used with or without the -s option, either way it has the same meaning) and reboot immediately. [-c] Cancel any scheduled firmware update and record results of this operation in the log file. Only one firmware packages can be scheduled at one time, if a firmware update needs to be applied instead of the currently scheduled firmware update package, the user needs to cancel the current (run with the -c option on any firmware package) package and subsequently run the applicable firmware package. [-x directory] Use with firmware updates to extract the update to directory named directory. Since the Package-For-The-Web extracts itself to subdirectory in the %TEMP% directory, a relative directory will be relative to that location. Normally the user will want to specify an absolute directory. [-xd] Use with firmware updates to extract floppy diskette(s). The floppy diskette(s) can subsequently be used to boot and apply the update in the customary "apply update from floppy diskette" fashion. This option is not available for all firmware updates, such as Tape Drive and Hard Disk updates. [-w] The PowerQuest Virtual Boot Environment requires 2 free sectors on the first track before it can schedule a firmware update. Use this option only if scheduling an update failed because 2 free sectors were not found in the first track. This option will wipe or clear the non boot and the non partition information sectors on the first track. These sectors are normally not used. Before clearing the sectors a copy of the complete first track is saved in the %temp% directory from which the update runs. [-?] Display information about the command line switches. Only the apply-update-silently (-s) option is necessarily unattended, that is the other command line options such as display help (-?) may require the user to "hit any key" to continue. If Windows packages are run without any command line options, a GUI is displayed. This GUI offers all the options available at the command line, except that the -w option is not available.
