IBM Automatic Server Restart (ASR) Support Software Package version 5.27.02B THIS VERSION CONTAINS DIGITALLY SIGNED DRIVERS. PLEASE REFER TO IBM'S WEB SITE FOR THE XSERIES SERVERS THAT THESE DRIVERS SUPPORT. (http://www.pc.ibm.com/support) CONTENTS -------- 1.0 Overview 2.0 Change History 3.0 Install, Uninstall and Setup Instructions 4.0 Configuration Information 5.0 Unattended Mode 6.0 Web Sites and Support Phone Number 7.0 Trademarks and Notices 8.0 Disclaimer 1.0 Overview ------------- 1.1 About this code This package contains support software for IBM Automatic Server Restart (ASR) hardware on specific models of xSeries servers. Installing this software package will enable the server to automatically restart itself if the Windows operating system ever crashes or unexpectedly hangs. (If this ASR feature is not desired then this software package should not be installed. Please see the Dependencies section below for additional information.) 1.2 Limitations The ASR software will only run on xSeries servers that do not have the Remote Supervisor Adaptor (RSA) or the Remote Supervisor Adaptor II (RSA II) installed. However, no harm occurs if this ASR package is installed on servers equipped with the RSA or the RSA II because the ASR software detects the presence of the RSA or RSA II and goes to sleep so as not to interfere with the operation of a similar RSA and RSA II feature called the OS Watchdog. Installing this ASR software package, whether or not the servers are equipped with the RSA or the RSA II, will also remove the yellow bang that might otherwise appear for the ASR hardware. See the Dependencies section below for additional information. 1.3 Enhancements - N/A 1.4 Level of Recommendations and Prerequisites for the Update: - N/A 1.5 Dependencies: On some xSeries server models the Windows operating systems will detect the ASR hardware and try to locate a matching device driver. If this ASR package is not installed, Windows Device Manager may mark the ASR hardware with a yellow bang (!) to indicate it is inoperable. There is no harm in this and the server will continue to operate normally but without the ASR feature running, however Windows will issue a warning prompt during each reboot. 2.0 Change History ------------------- Version 5.27.02B Updated the included SMBus signed driver package and ASR system service to a newer version that runs at a higher priority. This update is used for ASR support on xSeries servers that contain an Integrated System Management Processor. Version 5.27.01C Updated the included SMBus driver package to a version that contains digitally signed drivers. This driver is used for ASR support on xSeries servers that contain an Integrated System Management Processor. Added installation instruction notes when installing this package on xSeries server models that contain the Integrated System Management Processor (ISMP). Added information on uninstalling the ASR software package. Version 5.27 Added support for future xSeries servers. Version 5.26 Added support for future xSeries servers. Version 5.24.01 Fixed a problem in the installation code that prevented the update of the SMBus driver. The drivers are unchanged from the previous release, only the installation code changed. Version 5.24 Fixed a problem in the driver that could cause Windows to crash while it is shutting down. Version 5.23 Changed the README.TXT version number to match the internal version of the system management device driver so that all verbal, written and software references that identify the driver version will be consistent. Version 1.02 Fixed problems with driver installation to allow this package to be used by IBM Update Xpress. 3.0 Install, Uninstall and Setup Instructions ---------------------------------------- 3.1 To install ASR driver under Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000, execute the following command: xxxxxxxx.EXE where xxxxxxxx.EXE refers to the filename of the ASR package as it appears on the IBM download website. xxxxxxxx is usually a part number. Follow the directions that appear on the screen. NOTE: If the Windows Hardware Wizard starts itself before, or during the installation of ASR device drivers, because it has detected the System Management hardware, then close the Hardware Wizard by clicking the "Cancel" button. The actions of the Hardware Wizard are not needed. NOTE: For xSeries servers x200 and x300: If IBM Director version 4.1 is installed after this ASR package, then this ASR package will need to be reinstalled following IBM Director version 4.1 installation. NOTE: xSeries servers with the Integrated System Management Processor (ISMP) will need Microsoft Windows Installer to install the ASR function. Windows Installer can be installed manually before launching this ASR package, or the server can be hooked up to an active internet connection and the ASR installation routine will automatically download Windows Installer and then proceed with the ASR installation. Note that the ASR installation will proceed if the installation of the Window Installer is cancelled. In this case, ASR will not function and needs to be reinstalled. 3.2 You can uninstall the ASR driver under Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000, but Windows will likely prompt during reboot for the location of the ASR driver files. See the Dependencies section (1.5) for additional details. On xSeries servers that do NOT have the Integrated System Management Processor (ISMP), the following steps will temporarily or permanently uninstall the ASR driver. To uninstall the ASR driver for the current boot of the operating system, open Windows Device Manager and under System devices right-click the IBM Automatic Server Restart device and choose Uninstall. Follow any additional directions that appear, The ASR driver will be automatically reinstalled on the next server reboot. To permanently uninstall the ASR driver, you also need to delete the ASR driver file from the location where the ASR driver package was downloaded and launched from. By default this is the location defined by the Temp environment variable. Locate and delete ibmasrw.sys. The next time the server is rebooted, Windows will not find the ASR driver file and will prompt for its location. Cancel the prompt and the server will finish booting. You will need to cancel this prompt each time the server is rebooted. On xSeries servers with the ISMP, the ASR function is driven through a service rather than a stand-alone device driver. To stop the ASR service on ISMP-based xSeries servers: * Launch Windows Services. * Right-click the IBM Automatic Server Restart Executable entry and select Properties. * Under the General tab, change the Startup type to Disabled and click OK. * Reboot the server. 4.0 Configuration Information ------------------------------- - N/A 5.0 Unattended Mode --------------------- To install ASR drivers under Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 in unattended mode, execute the ASR package with parameters as shown: xxxxxxxx.EXE -s -a -Q where: xxxxxxxx.EXE Refers to the filename of the ASR package as it appears on the IBM download website. xxxxxxxx is usually a part number. -s Indicates a silent installation in which no user prompts are displayed. -a -Q There are several packages bundled with this ASR software package and the -a -Q combination passes the silent mode instruction to the internal routines. 6.0 WEB Sites and Support Phone Number --------------------------------------- 6.1 IBM Support Web Site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/support 6.2 IBM Marketing eServer xSeries Web Site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/eserver/xseries 6.3 If you have any questions about this update, or problems applying the update go to the following Help Center World Telephone Numbers URL: http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/YAST-3P2QYL.html 7.0 Trademarks and Notices --------------------------- The following terms are trademarks of the Microsoft Corporation in the United States or other countries or both: Windows Windows 2000 Windows Server 2003 8.0 Disclaimer --------------------------- 8.1 THIS DOCUMENT IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND.
