PowerChute Business Edition Agent provides UPS status monitoring and, in the event of an extended power outage, system shutdown capabilities for your UPS-protected computers. This software must be installed on each computer that is directly attached to one of the UPS Models. PowerChute Business Edition Server is used to configure and monitor the PowerChute Business Edition Agents. The PowerChute Server gathers information from the PowerChute Agents and provides centralized event tracking, event notification and a single point of contact for the PowerChute Console. This software must be installed on one of the networked computers. PowerChute Business Edition Console connects to the PowerChute Business Edition Server to provide the user interface for managing and configuring the UPS-protected systems. Install the PowerChute Console on any workstation, desktop, or laptop (running a supported operating system). 1.2 Known Issues on PowerChute Business Edition Agent for Linux (1) Issue: The product does not perform properly with an APC Back-UPS or an APC UPS using Simple Signaling. Solution: PowerChute Business Edition requires the 940-0020B cable for UPS communications using Simple Signaling. If you were using the 940-0023A cable with a previous PowerChute product, you must replace it with the 940-0020B cable when you use PowerChute Business Edition. (2) Issue: PowerChute Business Edition does not install on a system which is using the SJIS locale. Solution: The SJIS locale is not supported by PowerChute Business Edition. The only Japanese locale supported by PowerChute is eucJ. (3) Issue: SNMP Communication cannot be configured. Solution: SNMP communication is not available on PowerChute Business Edition Agent for Linux. (4) Issue: PowerChute Business Edition Agents running on Linux may not be able to send broadcast messages to Windows systems. If you are using Japanese-language systems, messages sent from Linux to Windows may not be readable. Solution: These problems are the result of incompatibilities between Windows and Linux, and cannot be resolved through PowerChute. (5) Issue: When the PowerChute Business Edition daemon is stopped, the "Monitoring Stopped" event is not recorded in the PowerChute Business Edition event log. Solution: This is a known issue which will be corrected in a future release of PowerChute. (6) Issue: During the PowerChute Business Edition Agent install using the graphical.bin install file on a RedHat 7.3 Japanese system, dialog boxes display incorrect characters and text. Solution: Install the PowerChute Business Edition Agent using the RPM file. (7) Issue: When the --prefix option is used to install the RPM on RedHat 8.x, the PowerChute Business Edition Agent does not install to the directory specified. Solution: There is a known issue with RPM version 4.1x which ships with RedHat 8.0 where the --prefix option does not operate correctly. If this version of RPM is installed, the PowerChute Business Edition Agent will install to the default directory, /opt/APC/PowerChuteBusinessEdition/Agent, regardless of the directory specified. (8) Issue: When the --prefix option is used to install the RPM on Turbolinux 8.x, the /opt/APC/PowerChuteBusinessEdition/Agent directory is still created. Solution: This is an issue that will not affect the performance of PowerChute. This empty folder is removed upon uninstallation of the PowerChute Business Edition Agent. (9) Issue: During the boot process, the server momentarily pauses and displays messages similar to one of the following: - devfs: devfs_register(): device already registered: "cup" - rc0: RISCom/8 Board at 0x220 not found Solution: This is an issue that will not affect the performance of PowerChute. (10) Issue: PowerChute Business Edition Agent installer generates the following error on RedHat 9.0: - Exception in main class "JExpressLoader" Solution: The package compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.118.i386.rpm is required on the system prior to installing the PowerChute Business Edition Agent. (11) Issue: RPM uninstall reports "error: cannot remove /opt/APC/PowerChuteBusinessEditionAgent directory not empty". Solution: This is a cosmetic issue that does not affect the performance of Powerchute. The directory is properly removed during the uninstall. 1.3 Known Issues on PowerChute Business Edition Agent for Netware (1) Issue: Disabling active scripting in Internet Explorer means that the user cannot login to PowerChute Business Edition Agent. Description: The security mechanism on PowerChute Business Edition Agent will not allow the user to log in when security scripting is disabled in Internet Explorer. Solution: Do not disable security scripting in Internet Explorer. If security is disabled, open Internet Explorer and open the following menu: Tools\Internet Options\Security and enable active scripting. (2) Issue: An ActiveX control in the Login screen is marked as being unsafe while using Internet Explorer. Description: PowerChute Business Edition Agent requires that active scripting be enabled in Internet Explorer. Solution: Ensure that active scripting is enabled by navigating to Tools\Internet Options\Security and selecting the Custom Level button. (3) Issue: A Security Alert appears when you attempt to login to PowerChute Business Edition Agent while "launching programs and files in IFRAME" is disabled in Internet Explorer. Description: PowerChute Business Edition Agent requires that IFRAME be enabled to run properly. Solution: Ensure that IFRAME is enabled by navigating to Tools\Internet Options\Security. (4) Issue: PowerChute Business Edition Agent UI becomes distorted when you enable "Ignore colors specified on Web Pages" in Internet Explorer. Description: PowerChute Business Edition Agent requires certain colors from the default palette to display its UI correctly in Internet Explorer. Solution: Disable "Ignore colors specified on Web Pages" by navigating to Tools\Internet Options menu item in Internet Explorer. (5) Issue: The user is not able to restart PowerChute Business Edition Agent. Solution: To restart the PowerChute Business Edition Agent, first do ONE of the following: A) unload AIOCOMX.NLM and then reload AIOCOMX.NLM for all ports in use, including the one used by the PowerChute Business Edition Agent. -OR- B) unload JAVA.NLM, then reload JAVA.NLM and all other applications that use JAVA.NLM. Then, start the PowerChute Business Edition Agent by typing: sys:\\Agent\Bin\startup where is the location of the PowerChute Business Edition Agent files. (6) Issue: When configuring your Internet Explorer web browser to check for newer versions of stored pages, the PowerChute Business Edition Agent does not support the "Every visit to the page" option. Solution: Configure your browser to check for newer versions of stored pages "Automatically" in Internet Explorer "Internet Options". 1.4 Known Issues on PowerChute Business Edition for Microsoft Windows (1) Issue: Installation Error Message - Could not stop the UPS service. Please reboot and retry setup. Description: Setup failed to stop the native Windows NT/ 2000/ XP/ 2003 UPS service. Reboot the computer before you attempt to install the PowerChute Agent again. (2) Issue: Installation Error Message - Error encountered while installing the service. Please reboot and retry setup. Description: Setup failed to install the PowerChute service. Make sure that no PowerChute files are already installed, and that the computer uses a supported operating system (see System Requirements for Installation), before you attempt the installation again. (3) Issue: Installation Error Message - Error on attempt to load dll: . Description: Setup failed to load the identified DLL. Make sure that the computer uses the correct operating system (see System Requirements for Installation) and meets the PowerChute Business Edition Agent Requirements, before you attempt the installation again. (4) Issue: Installation Error Message - Failed to load necessary resource. Description: Setup cannot load the resources (DLL resources, native InstallShield resources, etc.) needed to install the PowerChute component. Make sure that the computer has sufficient memory available (see System Requirements for Installation) before you attempt the installation again. (5) Issue: Installation Error Message - Password is not 3-16 characters long. Description: Use a Password that has at least three characters, but no more than sixteen. (6) Issue: Installation Error Message - PowerChute Business Edition requires administrator privileges to install and run. Please log off and rerun Setup using an administrator-privileged account. Description: You must have administrative access to the computer before you can install any PowerChute component. (7) Issue: Installation Error Message - Setup could not determine if the select path is valid. Please select a directory on the local hard drive. Description: You cannot install PowerChute on a network drive, floppy disk drive, zip drive, or any other drive except the local hard-disk drive. (8) Issue: Installation Error Message - Setup failed to restart the Native UPS service. You must manually restart the service or reboot to enable power protection. Description: Setup cannot restart the Windows 2000/ Windows XP UPS service which Setup stopped in order to install the PowerChute Agent. Restart this service manually or by rebooting the computer. (9) Issue: Installation Error Message - The two passwords must match to proceed. Description: You cannot install the PowerChute component until your Password and Confirm entries match. (10) Issue: Installation Error Message - User name is not 3-16 characters long. Description: Use a User name that has at least three characters, but no more than sixteen. (11) Issue: Setup Does Not Automatically Detect the System's UPS Solution: This section describes how to correct the problems that could cause the setup program to fail to detect the system's UPS. During Setup, a UPS Type and Communication Port screen will appear under the following circumstances: - You clicked No when asked if you wanted to search all communications ports for the UPS. In this case, you can either select the UPS Type and Port settings from the drop-down lists, or, if the system uses a smart-signaling UPS, you can click Run Detect to have Setup search for the UPS. - You clicked Yes to have the communication ports searched, but Setup failed to detect the UPS. - If the system uses a simple-signaling UPS (Back-UPS or simple-signaling Back-UPS Pro), an Interface Expander, or a Share-UPS that uses its Basic port to connect to the system, use the UPS Type and Port drop-down lists to identify the UPS and the communication port, and click Next > to continue. - If the system uses a smart-signaling UPS, click Run Auto Detect to have Setup search for the UPS again. If the system uses a smart-signaling UPS, and Setup fails to detect that UPS device after you click Run Auto Detect in the "UPS Type and Communication Port" display, the following problems can all prevent Setup from discovering that UPS. - Another service, such as a terminal emulator, is using the communications port to which the UPS connects. Stop any service that is using the communications port, or connect the UPS to another communications port, and then click Run Auto Detect to have Setup search for the UPS again. - The UPS is not using the smart-signaling serial cable, the supplied Serial-to USB adapter cable, or a standard USB cable to connect to the system. - The UPS connects to a USB port that is not enabled in the computer BIOS. - The UPS connects to a communications port that uses an incorrect UPS communications setting. - A problem exists in the connection between the UPS and the computer. Check the serial port settings is you use a serial port, as distinct from a USB port. (12) Issue: Order of Upgrading Components solution: When upgrading PowerChute, install the PowerChute compenents in this order: 1) Agent, 2) Server, and 3) Console. This applies to a manual upgrade, that is, when Product Update is disabled (13) Issue: Characters Not Allowed in User Names and Passwords Solution: In user names and passwords, you cannot use a colon (:), a uotation mark ("), a question mark (?), an asterisk (*), an ampersand (&), a space ( ), or double- and single-byte Japanese characters. You can use a single quotation mark ('). (14) Issue: Uninstalling PowerChute Business Edition Soultion: This section describes how to properly uninstall PowerChute Business edition from your system. If you uninstall PowerChute from your system, your native Windows UPS Service will be restored, but you must configure it to start automatically. From the Windows Service dialog box, double-click the Uninterruptible Power Supply service. Set the Startup Type to Automatic if you want the service to start when your system starts. Select Start to start the service immediately. After removing PowerChute, you might need to remove some files and folders manually. Check for the folder called \program files\APC\PowerChute Business Edition and delete it, including its contents, if it still exists. The following message might occur when you attempt to uninstall a PowerChute Agent. Message: Error encountered while removing the Agent service. Please reboot after setup exits. Description: Setup failed to remove the PowerChute Agent service. The service is either hung up or not installed. Note: On Windows 2003 Web Edition ONLY, some files are not deleted when you uninstall. This does not damage your computer system. (15) Issue: Network Communications Issues When a DNS Server Cannot Be Reached Solution: You might experience network communications problems from the PowerChute Business Edition Agent, Server and Console if: - Your network does not have a DNS server OR - Your local system has been recently disconnected from the network OR - There is a network issue between the local system and the DNS server It might also happen if you are running a peer-to-peer network or a stand-alone system. If you are experiencing problems, do the following to have PowerChute use IP addresses instead of attempting to resolve hostnames with the DNS server: 1. Open the PowerChute Console. 2. Select Preferences in the View menu. 3. Select the "Network" tab. 4. Disable (uncheck) the Resolve Hostnames option. 5. Click Apply. (16) Issue: Limited Users on Windows XP solution: The PowerChute Console is not designed for use by the Limited Users mode of operating with Windows XP. Limited Users will not be able to execute the console.exe program (17) Issue: SNMP Service Solution: PowerChute relies on your system's SNMP Agent to send SNMP traps. You have an SNMP option in the PowerChute Console even if your system does not have an SNMP service. (18) Issue: Windows NT and Broadcasting to IP Addresses Solution: There are two limitations for broadcast messaging in the Windows NT environment: - PowerChute cannot send broadcast messages to the IP address of a Windows NT machine. - If your PowerChute Server is on a Windows NT machine, PowerChute might not send broadcast messages to an IP address. Use DNS names if the sender or recipient is running Windows NT. (19) Issue: UPS Self-Tests Not Always Logged Solution: UPS Self-Test events are not always logged in the PowerChute Event Log. Self-tests initiated from the front panel of the UPS are never logged. Sometimes, self-tests initiated by PowerChute or by accessories are not logged. (20) Issue: Console Does Not Clear Event Solution: When connected to a Back-UPS, the Time On Battery Threshold Exceeded event displays on the PowerChute Console after the event condition has ended. Check the Event Log for the current status. You can clear the event from the Console in three ways: 1. Stop and then restart the PowerChute Agent. 2. Reboot the OS. 3. Temporarily change the UPS port. In Device Properties - Communications - UPS Communications, change the port, click Apply. Now change the port back to what it was and click Apply. To configure it to start automatically during server startup, append the startup command above to the sys:\system\autoexec.ncf file after the entry sys:\\bin\startup. 3.2 Installing the PowerChute Business Edition Agent on Linux Launch the PowerChute Business Edition for Linux installer by entering the absolute path to the pbe_agent_redhat_jvm.bin file. An RPM package of the PowerChute Business Edition Agent for Linux is also available. Install the package using the -i (install) option. For example, if the CD-ROM is mounted to /mnt/cdrom, you would enter the following at the shell prompt, rpm -i /mnt/cdrom/Linux/pbeagent-xxx.i386.rpm, where xxx is the version of the product. This installs PowerChute Business Edition to the default directory, /opt/APC/PowerchuteBusinessEdition/Agent. This rpm also supports the --prefix option to allow you to specify the destination directory. For example, rpm -i /mnt/cdrom/Linux/pbeagent-xxx.i386.rpm --prefix /PCBE_Agent, would install the PowerChute Business Edition Agent to the /PCBE_Agent directory. Once the RPM has been installed, you must configure the Agent for login information and the UPS type. This is handled by running the config.sh script located within the PowerChute Business Edition installation directory. This utility allows you to create an account name and password, and to configure the UPS by entering the communication type and communication port. After completing the configuration, you may start the PowerChute Business Edition Agent. After the installation process is completed, the PowerChute Business Edition Agent begins running automatically. The Agent runs automatically each time the operating system is started. To manually start the PowerChute Business Edition Agent after it has been deliberately stopped, you can enter the following command at the shell prompt from anywhere in the file system, /etc/init.d/PBEAgent start. To stop the PowerChute Business Edition Agent when it is running, you can enter the following command from anywhere in the file system, /etc/init.d/PBEAgent stop. To uninstall the PowerChute Business Edition Agent if you used the .bin executable, enter the absolute path to the uninstallPowerChuteBusinessEditionAgent script that is located in the directory where the Agent has been installed. For example, if the Agent is installed to /opt/APC/PowerChuteBusinessEdition/Agent directory, enter the following command at the shell prompt to uninstall the PowerChute Business Edition Agent, /opt/APC/PowerChuteBusinessEdition/Agent/uninstallPowerChuteBusinessEditionAgent. If you used the rpm to install the PowerChute Business Edition Agent, use the -e (erase) rpm option to uninstall Powerchute Business Edition. For example, rpm -e pbeagent. 3.3 Installing the PowerChute Business Edition Agent on Microsoft Windows Launch the setup.exe file in the Windows directory. 4.0 Web sites and phone support --------------------------------- Information and assistance is available through the IBM Web site and by phone. 4.1 Web sites IBM Support Web Site: http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/ IBM eServer Web site: http://www.ibm.com/eserver/xseries/ 4.2 Software service and support Through IBM Support Line, you can get telephone assistance, for a fee, with usage, configuration, and software problems with xSeries servers, IntelliStation workstations, and appliances.
