IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator Version 1.8a Installation Instructions and Notes Installing IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator ------------------------------------------ Windows installation: 1. Copy the RACKCNFG.EXE file to a temporary directory on your hard drive. 2. End all other windows applications before continuing. 3. In Windows 3.1, click File from the Program Manager menu bar, then click Run. In Windows 95 or Windows NT click the Start icon, then click Run. 4. In Run dialog box type ?:\XXX\rackcnfg.exe where "?" is the drive letter and "XXX" is the name of the directory. Click OK. 5. The program will decompress the installation process will begin. Follow the instructions on the screen. The Setup program will display information screens and option prompts as the IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator program is installed. 6. You may now delete the file RACKCNFG.EXE OS/2 in the WIN-OS/2 « session installation: 1. Copy the RACKCNFG.EXE file to a temporary directory on your hard drive. 2. End all other windows applications before continuing. 3. Open a Win-OS/2 full screen session 4. Go to the File menu on the Program Manager window and select Run. 5. Type ?:\XXX\rackcnfg.exe in the Command Line: field of the Run dialog box to start the installation program, where ?:\XXX is the hard drive and directory where you copied the RACKCNFG.EXE file 6. Follow the install routine instructions displayed. 7. After the IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator is installed, you will see the Win-OS/2 Program Manager group with the icon for starting the configurator. There are also icons for accessing the help file and for uninstalling the product, along with icons which will allow you to read important files included with the installation. 7. Close the Program Manager window to complete the installation. 9. Whenever you wish to use the IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator, open a Win-OS/2 full screen session an d use the icon in the Netfinity Rack Configurator program group to start the program Uninstalling IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator -------------------------------------------- To remove IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator from your computer: 1. Locate the Uninstall icon and click on it to delete all IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator files entirely from your system. Special Note for Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Users ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In the current release, the taskbar might cover the bottom portion of the IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator program screen, depending on your screen resolution or the placement of the program window on the Desktop. To get access to the taskbar: 1. Open the Start menu. 2. Go to Settings, and select "Taskbar." 3. In the dialog box that appears, check "Auto Hide." When Auto Hide is checked, the taskbar disappears when it is not being used. To get the taskbar back, move the mouse pointer to the previous location of the taskbar. The taskbar will pop up over the IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator program screen. Additional Information ---------------------- The BITMAPS Subdirectory ------------------------ The program will not run correctly if the bitmap files in the BITMAPS subdirectory are erased or modified in any way. The subdirectory name MUST be BITMAPS. Uninstallation and Reinstallation --------------------------------- If you have installed the IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator and decide to reinstall it, or install a later version, uninstall it first. Otherwise, a later uninstallation might not remove all the files. Tips ---- 1. Larger configurations require more system resources. With Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 you can create more complex configurations before a warning message is displayed. 2. In IBM OS/2 Warp, if you minimize the IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator, you will not be able to restore it using the Window List. You must locate the application icon on the Desktop or in the Minimized Window Viewer and restore the application from there. 3. To change the position of a rack in a rack suite within the IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator, you must drag the rack beyond the center of the racks on either side. If you drop the rack to the left of center, the rack will be moved to the left side. If you drop the rack to the right of center, the rack will be moved to the right side. 4. In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Microsoft Windows 95, if you want to switch between the IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator and other applications, click on an area in the Picture window other than a rack. If you click on a rack, you may need to click several times before you can switch. 5. With Auto Arrange off, if you have a monitor compartment in a rack, you cannot make it the active component by clicking with the left mouse button. You must drag and drop it, using the left mouse button. 6. In OS/2, to avoid overwriting when printing, select Print Setup, then Options, and set the option TrueType fonts as Graphics. 7. User-defined components with dimensions that are not whole numbers will be rounded down to the nearest whole number. This might cause the rack to be configured with less space than required for the components. To ensure that enough space is available, enter all height dimensions rounded up to the next highest whole number. 8. The rack configurator does not check compatibility for clustering, external storage, networking hardware and communication devices. Exceeding this limit will cause your system to run out of virtual memory and it may need to be restarted.
