If you are using IBM Director web-based access, install Real Time Diagnostics on your IBM Director Agent managed system only. Before you install Real Time Diagnostics, make sure that the appropriate service processor device-drivers are installed for the hardware configuration in your system. You can download the appropriate Real Time Diagnostics installation files from the IBM Support Web Site: http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/ 3.1 Installing Real Time Diagnostics on a Windows system with IBM Director installed --------------------------------------------------------- Complete the following steps to install Real Time Diagnostics on a Windows system with IBM Director installed: 1. If "SNMP Access and Trap Forwarding" were installed with IBM Director Server, stop the SNMP service before you install RTD. From a command prompt, type the following command to stop SNMP: net stop snmp 2. Be sure that IBM Director is installed on each server on which you want to install Real Time Diagnostics. 3. Download the .exe file. 4. Start the .exe file. The "Installer" window opens. 5. Click Next. Review the License Agreement. 6. Click Next. 7. Click Next. 8. Click Finish. 9. If you stopped the SNMP service to install RTD, restart the SNMP service. From a command prompt, type the following command to start the SNMP service: net start snmp 3.2 Installing Real Time Diagnostics on a Linux system with IBM Director Server installed ------------------------------------------------------- Complete the following steps to install Real Time Diagnostics on a Linux system with IBM Director Server installed: 1. Be sure that IBM Director Server is installed on each system on which you want to install Real Time Diagnostics. 2. Download the .tgz file. 3. To extract the file, type the following command: tar -xvzf <.tgz Filename> The contents are extracted to the current directory. 4. To install Real Time Diagnostics, type the following command: rpm -ivh RealTimeDiagnostics-server-2.11-1.rpm This command restarts IBM Director Server. 5. Type the following command: rpm -ivh PCDRPegasusCIMProvider-040616-1.i386.rpm 3.3 Installing Real Time Diagnostics on a Linux system with IBM Director Console installed ------------------------------------------------------- Complete the following steps to install Real Time Diagnostics on a Linux system with IBM Director Console installed: Note: To run the ServeRAID component test on a Linux system, make sure that the ServeRAID Manager component of IBM Director is installed. For detailed instructions on installing ServeRAID Manager, see the IBM Director Installation and Configuration Guide. 1. Be sure that IBM Director management console is installed on each system on which you want to install Real Time Diagnostics. 2. Download the .tgz file. 3. To extract the file, type the following command: tar -xvzf <.tgz Filename> The contents are extracted to the current directory. 4. To install Real Time Diagnostics, type the following command: rpm -ivh RealTimeDiagnostics-console-2.11-1.rpm 3.4 Installing Real Time Diagnostics on a Linux system with IBM Director Agent installed ------------------------------------------------------- Complete the following steps to install Real Time Diagnostics on a Linux system with IBM Director Agent installed: 1. Be sure that IBM Director Agent is installed on each system on which you want to install Real Time Diagnostics. 2. Download the .tgz file. 3. To extract the file, type the following command: tar -xvzf <.tgz Filename> The contents are extracted to the current directory. 4. To install Real Time Diagnostics, type the following command: rpm -ivh RealTimeDiagnostics-agent-2.11-1.rpm This command restarts IBM Director Server. 5. Type the following command: rpm -ivh PCDRPegasusCIMProvider-040616-1.i386.rpm 3.5 Installing Real Time Diagnostics using Remote Deployment Manager ------------------------------------------------------------- To use RDM to install Real Time Diagnostics, make sure the RDM Windows Native Install task and the Linux Native Install task include the: o Operating system o MPA driver (optional) o IBM Director Agent o RTD Agent Make sure that IBM Director Agent is installed before RTD Agent. Use the following Real Time Diagnostics unattended installation command to create the RTD image in RDM: -W welcome.active=False -W license.active=False -W preview.active=False -W summary.active=False where is the name of the executable used to install RTD. Note: To use RDM to install Real Time Diagnostics on a Linux system, create a custom install script to be used as the application installation file. For more information on using RDM, see Remote Deployment Manager Operations Guide. 4.0 UNINSTALLING REAL TIME DIAGNOSTICS --------------------------------------- This section contains information about uninstalling Real Time Diagnostics. Note: After you uninstall the Real Time Diagnostics software, you can continue to use IBM Director without restarting the system; however, RTD tasks continue to be displayed in the IBM Director console until the system has been restarted. 4.1 Uninstalling Real Time Diagnostics from a Windows system with Director installed ------------------------------------------------------------- Complete the following steps to uninstall Real Time Diagnostics from a Windows system with IBM Director installed: 1. Navigate to the Windows Control Panel. 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. The "Add/Remove" window opens. 3. Click Real Time Diagnostics. 4. Click Remove. The confirmation window opens. 5. Click Yes and follow the on-screen instructions. 6. Restart the system to complete the uninstallation process. 4.2 Uninstalling Real Time Diagnostics from a Linux system with IBM Director Server installed ----------------------------------------------------------- Complete the following steps to uninstall Real Time Diagnostics from a Linux system with IBM Director Server installed: 1. From a terminal window, change to the directory where Real Time Diagnostics is installed. 2. To remove PC Doctor, type the following command: rpm -e PCDRPegasusCIMProvider-040616-1 3. To remove Real Time Diagnostics, type the following command: rpm -e RealTimeDiagnostics-server-2.11-1 4. Restart the system to complete the uninstallation process. 4.3 Uninstalling Real Time Diagnostics from a Linux system with IBM Director Console installed ----------------------------------------------------------- Complete the following steps to uninstall Real Time Diagnostics from a Linux system with IBM Director Console installed: 1. From a terminal window, change to the directory where Real Time Diagnostics is installed. 2. To remove Real Time Diagnostics, type the following command: rpm -e RealTimeDiagnostics-console-2.11-1 3. Restart the system to complete the uninstallation process. 4.4 Uninstalling Real Time Diagnostics from a Linux system with IBM Director Agent installed ----------------------------------------------------------- Complete the following steps to uninstall Real Time Diagnostics from a Linux system with IBM Director Agent installed: 1. From a terminal window, change to the directory where Real Time Diagnostics is installed. 2. To remove PC Doctor, type the following command: rpm -e PCDRPegasusCIMProvider-040616-1 3. To remove Real Time Diagnostics, type the following command: rpm -e RealTimeDiagnostics-agent-2.11-1 4. Restart the system to complete the uninstallation process. 5.0 STARTING REAL TIME DIAGNOSTICS ----------------------------------- The following section provides information about how to start the RTD graphical user interface (GUI) from Windows and Linux. 5.1 Starting RTD on a Windows system ------------------------------------- To start the RTD GUI from Windows click Start --> Programs --> Real Time Diagnostics. 5.2 Using Web-based Access to start RTD on a managed system (Windows only) ------------------------------------------------------ If you installed Web-based Access when you installed IBM Director Agent, you can access the managed system by using the following Web browsers: o Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 4.1 or later o Netscape Navigator, version 4.x or 7.01 Complete the following steps to start Web-based Access on a local or remote system using a Web browser: 1. Open a web browser. 2. Type the following address in the Web browser address field: http://: where: o is the TCP/IP address of the managed system or the system name of the managed system, as returned by DNS. o is the port number that is assigned for use by Web-based Access during IBM Director Agent installation. Port number 411 is the default for initial access, and port number 423 is the default for secure access (https://localhost:423/index.html). If you used different values during configuration, you must use those values instead. 3. Log on to the system using the applicable username and password. When Web-based Access has connected to a managed system, the Web-based Access program opens in your Web browser. 4. In the left pane click the Tasks tab. The tasks page is displayed. 5.3 Starting RTD on a Linux system ----------------------------------- Complete the following steps to start the RTD GUI from Linux: 1. From a command prompt, navigate to the following directory: /opt/IBM/director/classes 2. Type "./rtd.sh" and press Enter. 5.4 Starting RTD from IBM Director Console ------------------------------------------- Complete the following steps to start RTD from IBM Director Console: 1. From IBM Director Console, drag the "Diagnostics" task onto a managed system that has RTD installed on it. The RTD window opens. 6.0 USING THE RTD COMMAND LINE INTERFACE (CLI) ----------------------------------------------- The RTD command line interface is supported only on Linux systems. You can use the RTD CLI to run IBM Real Time Diagnostics tasks from a command line. You can use the CLI locally on the server or remotely through a Linux console. The RTD CLI executable file is rtdcli. If you installed RTD in the default location, the CLI executable file is located in the following directory: /opt/IBM/director/CIMOM/bin directory The command-line syntax in this document uses the following conventions: o Commands are shown in lowercase letters. o Variables are shown in angle brackets italics and explained immediately afterward. o Optional commands are enclosed in brackets. o When you must type one of two or more alternative parameters, the parameters are separated by vertical bars. The rtdcli command uses the following syntax: rtdcli [-optional parameters] where is a valid rtdcli command. The following commands are supported: o help Displays the available commands and optional parameters for the rtdcli command. o actions Displays the Common Diagnostics Model (CDM) actions that are currently installed. o components Displays the installed components and applicable CDM actions that can be run against these components. o run Runs the CDM actions that you specify. When used without any optional parameters, RTD will execute all of the applicable non-destructive CDM actions for all installed components in sequence. The following optional parameters can be used with the run command: o -x Runs the destructive actions in addition to the non- destructive actions. Note: Destructive actions potentially modify existing data. For example, a floppy drive write test could potentially overwrite the existing data. o -c , where is a valid component name. Specifies the component against which RTD will perform the command. o -a , where is a valid action that can be run. Specifies an action to be run by the command. Note: If an action name or the path to a component includes spaces, enclose the action name in quotes. For example, rtdcli run -c "/dev/my share/sdb1" Complete the following steps to run an RTD task from a command line interface: 1. Change to the /opt/IBM/director/CIMOM/bin directory. 2. Enter the applicable rtdcli command and press enter. The results of the command are displayed. 7.0 KNOWN ISSUES, LIMITATIONS, AND WORKAROUNDS ----------------------------------------------- This section provides information about known issues, limitations, and workarounds. 7.1 Real Time Diagnostics product information ---------------------------------------------- The RTD product name and version number are not displayed in the IBM Director help panel. To view the RTD product name and version number, open the Task Extension window. 7.2 IBM Director group ----------------------- When you maximize a group icon, the contents of the group might not be displayed. To display the contents of a group, maximize the "Systems with IBM Director" group. Then, drag the system with Real Time Diagnostics installed onto the Real Time Diagnostics Task Extension. 7.3 RTD system is not displayed -------------------------------- Some systems might not be displayed in the "Systems with Diagnostics" group. To ensure that all systems are displayed, perform an inventory collection on all systems. By default, IBM Director performs a mandatory inventory collection during system discovery and repeats the collection every seven days. When you make changes, such as creating a system or adding diagnostics to an existing managed object, IBM Director does not perform inventory collection. 7.4 CD or DVD tests fail ------------------------- CD or DVD tests might fail for Linear, Rand, and Funnel Seeks. 7.5 SCSI disk drive tests fail for BladeCenter (HS20) IDE RAID --------------------------------------------------------------- RTD does not support local IDE hard disk drives that are configured using RAID utilities. IDE RAID disk drives that are installed in BladeCenter (HS20) servers are displayed in the operating system and RTD as SCSI hard disks. SCSI disk drive tests are not valid with these hardware configurations. 7.6 Unable to access RTD after twgreset ---------------------------------------- To access RTD after you run the twgreset command, reinstall RTD. 7.7 RTD does not complete loading when it is started using IBM Director Console ----------------------------------------------------------- When you use IBM Director Console to start RTD, RTD remains in the loading state. If this occurs, restart Director Server or Agent, as applicable, on the system on which you are running RTD. 7.8 CPU tests --------------- If a CPU test does not complete, restart Director Server or Agent, as applicable, on the system on which you are running RTD. 7.9 Scalability and RXE Ports test ----------------------------------- The Scalability and RXE Ports test is not supported on IBM eServer xSeries 365, machine type 8861 or 8862, with RedHat Advanced Server 2.1. 7.10 System-management hardware actions ---------------------------------------- (Linux only) RTD might list an inaccurate number of processors when you run System-management hardware actions against a system that contains processors with hyper-threading support. 7.11 Read/Write Self test on tape drive ---------------------------------------- The Read/Write Self test fails is unsupported on systems that have a tape drive that is connected to a RAID adapter. 7.12 Parallel Port test ------------------------ The Parallel Port test is unsupported on IBM eServer xSeries 225, machine type 8649, with a Remote Supervisor Adapter II installed. 7.13 USB CD Rom tests ---------------------- If a USB CD Rom test fails to complete when run against an IBM eServer xSeries 230, machine type 8658, restart RTD and rerun the test. 7.14 Unable to access RTD -------------------------- RTD is unsupported on IBM eServer xSeries 200 servers, machine type 8479, if a RAID adapters installed. RTD might not start on these systems. Remove the RAID adapter and restart RTD. 7.15 Unable to access Help --------------------------- You might be unable to access the RTD Help system.
