Level of Recommendations and Prerequisites for the update: - BIOS version 1.04, or later, must be installed prior to installing this ISMP firmware update. - A full tape backup should be completed and verified prior to running this, or any other system upgrade. - RAID configuration should be saved to a diskette: see the "Hardware Maintenance Manual" for more details. 1.5 Dependencies: - none 2.0 Change History ______________________________________ Integrated System Management Version 1.09, Build ID GE8T22A - changes to build code - fix a problem with incorrect date/time due to leap year Integrated System Management Version 1.08, Build ID GE8T20A - removed the non-redundant alert seen when a single power supply and fan fault occurs - added filter for false power supply fan errors for power supplies Integrated System Management Version 1.07 - removed phantom Ierrors seen in log every hour after a real Ierror is taken in a CPU - removed incorrectly lit ISMP LED when a serial cable is connected Integrated System Management Version 1.06 - added DIMM LED command for BIOS - fans now ramp on a slow analog curve. - corrected diagnostic LED function after a power supply overspec fault Integrated System Management Version 1.05 - added support for power supplies - added ambient/CPU temp control of fans Integrated System Management Version 1.04 - corrected processor fault lightpath error seen on systems with 400 MHz Front side bus Integrated System Management Version 1.03 - Removed unnecessary code to check for processor stepping level. This change does not affect any current operations and was put in to streamline the code. Integrated System Management Version 1.02 - Added support for 533 MHz front side bus Integrated System Management Version 1.01 - Fixed Power Supply false errors - Significantly improved ASM Interconnect quality Integrated System Management Version 1.00 - Original Release 3.0 Installing and Setup Instructions ______________________________________ To install the firmware on this diskette, perform the following steps: 3.1 Make sure BIOS version 1.04, or later, is installed. 3.2 Make sure your system is powered down. 3.3 Insert the diskette in the diskette drive. 3.4 Power on your system to boot from diskette drive. If your system does not boot from the diskette, use POST/BIOS setup utility to configure the diskette drive as a boot device. 3.5 From the main option menu, select "Update System Management Processor". 3.6 When the update completes, remove the diskette from the drive and press Enter to restart the system. 4.0 Unattended Mode _______________________ This update utility does not support unattended installations but there are other ways to incorporate unattended installations of this code. Check 'Advanced users' section immediately below. Check the UpdateXpress CD for availability of unattended installs of this firmware. (The UpdateXpress CD is downloadable from http://www.ibm.com (use the search function to find " UpdateXpress"). 4.1 Advanced users: The contents of this diskette can be used to support unattended installations. Note: Using this utility in an unattended mode will unconditionally flash the server with the firmware from this update. The server will be flashed regardless of whether the currently installed firmware is older or newer than the firmware on this update. To perform an unattended installation, copy flash2.exe and all of the .BIN files from this diskette to a single directory on your drive. Boot the server to DOS and change the directory to the directory where you have copied these files. At the DOS prompt type: flash2 /u /e 5.0 WEB Sites and Support Phone Number __________________________________________ 5.1 IBM Support Web Site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/support 5.2 IBM eserver xSeries Web Site: http://www.ibm.com/eserver/xseries 5.3 If you have any questions about this update, or problems applying the update, go to the following Help Center World Telephone Numbers and URL: http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/YAST-3P2QYL.html. 6.0. Appendix A: Package Specific Installation Instruction This update is packaged as a self extracting shell script. To update your system, just execute the package with the appropriate options. You must be logged on as root, and the package must be run from an ext2/ext3 filesystem. Usage is as follows: packagename.sh [-?] | [-r] | [-s] | [-xd [device]] | [-x dirname] | [-w] -? Shows the command line help -r Install the package and reboot immediately -s Silent/unattented install -xd [device] Extracts contents to floppy disk(s) If device is not specified, floppy device /dev/fd0 is taken as the default. -x dirname Extracts contents to directory specified -w Save track0 to track01.sav and wipe boot sector (assumes -r) UpdateXpress packages use a portion of track0 of the first logical hard drive to store boot information for the virtual floppy environment. Normally, the only data contained on this track is the master boot record (MBR). Occasionally, updates will fail if there is no room to store the boot information on track0. If the update fails, execute the package with the -s -w options. This will erase track0 of the hard drive while preserving the MBR; install the virtual floppy on the drive, and then reboot the system to perform the update. The data contained in track0 is backed up in a file named track0.sav Please Note: The package update for Linux ONLY supports ext2/ext3 filesystems!
