This driver works with Intel 386, 486, Pentium computers. If you did not receive this file on a diskette or CD-ROM, you must create an installation diskette first. See the section below titled "Installation Overview" for instructions. ====================================================================== 2.0 Change History -------------- 1.0 01/23/2002 Initial Release ====================================================================== 3.0 Device Driver Installation -------------------------- This section describes a procedure for installing or updating a Windows NT 4.0 with tape device driver for the IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE tape drive. The procedure assumes previous tape drive hardware installation. That is, the tape drive is connected to a controller appropriate for the tape drive model. In addition, the drive must be powered. Login with administrator privilege. For Windows NT 4.0: 1. If you are installing from CD-ROM, or hard disc, locate the driver directory containing the file stident4.inf. One way to locate the folder is by using Start -> Programs -> Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Find -> Files or Folders..., then 'Look in: My Computer' for the file 'Named: stident4.inf'. Remember the folder's :\. Otherwise, if you are installing from diskette, insert the diskette, labeled as follows, into the floppy drive: "IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape Driver v1.0 for Windows NT 4.0 Intel Platform" Remember the installation folder as :\ (for example, A:\). 2. Start up the tape device driver installation program by selecting 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel', then double clicking the 'Tape Devices' icon. If you see a repeating sequencing horizontal progress bar -- 'Creating Driver List', that is immediately followed by the 'Install Driver' dialog, click 'Cancel'. (We'll get back to 'Install Driver' momentarily.) 3. In 'Tape Devices', under the 'Devices' tab, select (if not already highlighted) the IBM Tape identifier for your drive model. By way of example, the identifier should be similar to: 'IBM STT3401A (Driver not loaded.)'. Note. If the tape drive identifier is not present, Windows likely did not detect the drive during boot. Power down the system and verify the power and data cables are correctly oriented and securely connected. Also if two devices are attached to the same data (ribbon) cable, verify that the device's Master/Slave configurations do not conflict (see Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape Drive Hardware Configuration). You can verify whether the BIOS is detecting the tape drive by enabling and observing the BIOS's hardware detection display during system boot. 4. Select the 'Drivers' tab. 5. In the 'Installed Driver' box, click the 'Add...' button. 6. In the 'Install Driver' box, click the 'Have Disk...' button. 7. You will see a 'Install From Disk' box message -- 'Copy from manufacturer's files from: '. If you are installing from CD-ROM, set the to the :\ containing the file stident4.inf remembered in step 1, then click the 'OK' button. Otherwise if you are installing from a floppy diskette, set the to 'A:\' (or your floppy drive letter), then click the 'OK' button. 8. In the 'Install Driver' box's 'Tape Devices' list, you will see -- 'IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape (stident4.sys)'. Select the device model number which is the closest match to the label on your tape drive then click the 'Install' button. Note. This choice is not critical. 9. If you see a 'Windows NT Setup' box with the message -- 'The driver(s) for this Tape Device are already on the system. Do you want to use the currently installed driver(s) or install new one(s).', click the 'New' button. 10. You may see a 'Windows NT Setup' box with the message -- 'Please enter the full path to the IBM Tape device files. Then choose Continue. '. If you are installing from CD-ROM, or hard disc, set the to the directory remembered in step 1. To this appended \I386 for Intel computers. That is, set the to :\\I386 then click the 'Continue' button. Otherwise if you are installing from a floppy diskette, set the to 'A:\I386' then click the 'Continue' button. 11. In the 'System Settings Change' box message, you will see -- 'You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?'. Remove the driver installation diskette, then click 'Yes' to shut down and restart the system. The tape driver is now installed and ready to use. You may want to use the Start -> Programs -> 'Administrative Tools' -> 'Backup' applet to verify correct tape drive operation. ====================================================================== 4.0 Supported Tape Drive Models --------------------------- The list below identifies IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE tape drive models supported by the stident4.sys driver. i386\stident4.sys -- IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape Driver v1.0 for Windows NT 4.0 Intel Platform File date: 11-01-01 File size: 5,760 Tape Drive Models ----------------- STT3401A ====================================================================== 5.0 Installation Overview --------------------- Use this general procedure to install a tape drive in the computer: * Create a driver installation diskette from the file stident4.exe. * Configure the tape drive's switches and install the tape drive in the computer. * Install the tape driver from the IBM tape driver installation diskette. * Reboot the system and verify correct operation. ====================================================================== 6.0 Creating an Installation Diskette from the File stident4.exe ------------------------------------------------------------ This procedure creates a tape driver installation diskette. It assumes you have downloaded the file stident4.exe to your system. You also need a formatted, empty diskette. stident4.exe is a self- extracting 32-bit WinZip program. Note. If you already have a driver installation diskette labeled "IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape Driver v1.0 for Windows NT 4.0 Intel Platform", skip this procedure. 1. Label the diskette: "IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape Driver v1.0 for Windows NT 4.0 Intel Platform". 2. On a Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, or XP, open Windows Explorer. 3. Locate the down-load directory containing stident4.exe. 4. Double click stident4.exe to start the self-extractor. 5. You will see a dialog box titled WinZip Self-Extractor [stident4.exe]. 6. In the Unzip To Folder field, set your floppy drive letter (for example A:). 7. Click the Unzip button. 8. You will see "3 file(s) unzipped successfully", then click OK. 9. Click Close This extracts files and creates the driver installation diskette with the following files (where A: is the floppy drive letter): A:\01R1008.txt This document A:\stident4.inf Setup information A:\i386\stident4.sys IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE driver for Intel 10. You may want to write protect the diskette. This completes the installation diskette creation procedure. Return to "Device Driver Installation" above. ====================================================================== 7.0 Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape Drive Hardware Configuration -------------------------------------------------- Please pay attention to these hardware configuration considerations for IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE tape drives: Shut down the system and turn power off before installing or configuring hardware. When an IDE hard disc is attached to a primary IDE cable, it is recommended that, when possible, the tape drive be connected to the secondary IDE cable. When two drives (for example a CD-ROM and a Tape drive) share an IDE cable, one must be configured as Master and the other as Slave. Master is sometimes referred to as SCSI Target ID 0, while Slave, is referred to as SCSI Target ID 1. There are two techniques used to configure Master/Slave -- Cable Select, and Explicit Master/Slave Jumper. The Cable Select technique configures one device as Master and the other as Slave by means of the connector to which the device is attached. Typically the device attached to the end of the cable is Master and the device connected to the middle is Slave. There are two requirements for the Cable Select technique to function correctly. 1) The IDE cable must be constructed to support Cable Select (the CSEL line, pin 28, is typically open for the middle connector and grounded for the end connector), and 2) both devices must be configured with jumpers installed on their CS pins. The Explicit Master/Slave Jumper technique permits the drive installer to control which drive is Master and which is Slave. The installer configures one drive as Master by installing the MA jumper, and the other as Slave by installing the SL jumper. Note that some drive models combine Master/Slave configuration with a single jumper. For example, the device is Master when the MA jumper is installed or Slave when the MA jumper is removed. For a single drive configuration, the best choice is, typically, connection to the end of the cable as a Master device. If you are unsure of the device configuration technique, consult the hardware manuals for both your computer and drives. If you are still unsure, try the Explicit Master/Slave Jumper technique mentioned above. You can verify the configuration by observing the BIOS's report on IDE and ATAPI devices found, during a system boot. ====================================================================== 8.0 Removing the Tape Driver from the System Configuration ------------------------------------------------------ This procedure removes the stident4.sys driver from the system configuration, but does not delete driver files. 1. From the desktop, click 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel', then double clicking the 'Tape Devices' icon. 2. In the 'Tape Devices' box, select the 'Drivers' tab. 3. In the 'Installed tape drivers are listed below' list, highlight the entry that contains 'IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape (stident4.sys)' then click the 'Remove' button. 4. You will see a 'Remove Driver' box message -- 'Are you sure you want to remove this driver?' then click the 'Yes' button. 5. In the 'Tape Devices' box, click 'OK'. 6. Shutdown and restart the system. The IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE tape drive is now installed and ready to use. ====================================================================== 9.0 Uninstalling Tape Driver Files ------------------------------ To completely uninstall the tape driver including deleting the driver files follow these steps: 1. Follow the instructions in section "Removing the Tape Driver from the System Configuration" above. 2. Using Windows NT Explorer or an MS-DOS command prompt, delete the tape driver file C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\stident4.sys. Note. C:\WINNT\ is the directory in which Windows NT is installed. It may be different on your system. 3. In the directory C:\WINNT\INF\ identify, any OEM*.INF and corresponding OEM*.PNF that were created during the stident4.sys driver installation. Where '*' is an integer. For example OEM0.INF, OEM1.INF, etc (and corresponding OEM0.PNF, OEM1.PNF, etc). OEM*.INF files contain ASCII text instructions used by Windows NT Setup to add and remove drivers. For each OEM*.INF, setup creates a corresponding OEM*.PNF file. CAUTION: There may be OEM*.INF (and corresponding OEM*.PNF) files installed for other (non-tape) device drivers. Do NOT delete these files. To identify the OEM*.INF and corresponding OEM*.PNF files associated with stident4.sys from an MS-DOS command prompt, use these commands: cd C:\WINNT\INF findstr /m /i stident4.sys oem*.inf Findstr will display a list of zero or more files. For example: oem0.inf For this example, delete both OEM0.INF and OEM0.PNF. An alternate method for locating OEM*.INF (and corresponding OEM*.PNF) files associated with stident4.sys is to examine the final line of each OEM*.INF file with an editor such as NOTEPAD.exe. If the final line of the .INF file contains the driver file name "stident4.sys", delete the .INF file and its corresponding .PNF file. For example, if the final line of OEM0.INF is similar to: stident4.DeviceDesc="IBM Travan ATAPI/IDE Tape (stident4.sys)" then delete both OEM0.INF and OEM0.PNF. The Tape Driver files are now completely removed. ====================================================================== 10.0 Important Notes --------------- Tape Drive Firmware Version Determination You can find the tape driver firmware revision using the 'Backup' applet. 1. Start the 'Backup' applet using 'Start' -> 'Administrative Tools' -> 'Backup'. 2. From the menu bar, select 'Operations' -> 'Hardware Setup...' 3. This opens the 'Hardware Setup' which looks something like ... 'Tape Drive Scsi 1, Bus 0, ID 1, Lun 0, IBM STT3401A 305F' The final 4 characters in the Tape Drive description (305F in this example) is the firmware revision. Examining Tape Device Driver Start Status If you wish to examine whether certain tape related device drivers are started, use the 'Devices' window.
