The IPSMON utility program enables you to monitor a ServeRAID adapter or controller for defunct drives, predictive failure analysis (PFA) warnings, rebuild operations, synchronizations, and logical-drive migrations. This utility program can log a message to the monitor, to a file, or to both the monitor and a file whenever activities occur. ____________________________________________________________________ 2.0 Installing IPSSEND and IPSMON ___________________________________ You can use the IPSSEND and the IPSMON utility programs with the following operating systems: o IBM OS/2 Warp Server and OS/2 LAN Server o Novell NetWare 3.12 and 4.1X o Microsoft Windows 95/Windows NT o SCO OpenServer 5.0.X You also can use the IPSSEND utility program with DOS, but this requires the ASPI Manager. 2.10 Installing with IBM OS/2 ------------------------------- To install the utility programs with OS/2: 1. Insert the "ServeRAID Supplemental Diskette" into the diskette drive. 2. Copy the IPSMON.EXE file to the IPSADM directory on your hard disk drive by typing the following at the command prompt: COPY A:\NT\IPSMON.EXE C:\IPSADM\IPSMON.EXE and press Enter. Refer to section 3.0 in this README file for information to start and use the IPSSEND and IPSMON utility programs. 2.30 Installing with Novell NetWare ------------------------------------- To install the utility programs with Novell NetWare: NOTE: These instructions assume that you installed NetWare in the NWSERVER directory.) 1. Insert the "ServeRAID Supplemental Diskette" into the diskette drive. 2. Copy the program files from the "ServeRAID Supplemental Diskette" to the directory where you installed NetWare by typing the following: COPY A:\NETWARE\IPSSEND.NLM C:\NWSERVER\IPSSEND.NLM 3. Press Enter; then, type: COPY A:\NETWARE\IPSMON.NLM C:NWSERVER\IPSMON.NLM 4. Press Enter. Refer to section 3.0 in this README file for information to start and use the IPSSEND and IPSMON utility programs. 2.40 Installing with SCO OpenServer 5.0.X ------------------------------------------- To install the utility programs with SCO OpenServer: 1. Type the following at the command prompt to create an IPSADM directory on your hard disk drive: mkdir /ipsadm and press Enter. 2. Change to the IPSADM directory that you just created by typing the following: cd /ipsadm and press Enter. 3. Copy the program files from the "ServeRAID Supplemental Diskette" by typing the following: doscp -r a:/openserv/ipssend ./ipssend 4. Press Enter; then, type: doscp -r a:/openserv/ipsmon ./ipsmon 5. Press Enter. 6. Change the access permissions to allow 'execute' by typing the following: chmod 700 ./ipssend 7. Press Enter; then, type: chmod 700 ./ipsmon 8. Press Enter. Refer to section 3.0 in this README file for information to start and use the IPSSEND and IPSMON utility programs. 2.50 Installing IPSSEND with DOS ----------------------------------- To install IPSSEND with DOS: NOTE: The ServeRAID ASPI Device Driver must be installed on your hard disk. 1. Insert the "ServeRAID Supplemental Diskette" into the diskette drive. 2. At the DOS command prompt, copy the program file from the "ServeRAID Supplemental Diskette" to your hard disk by typing the follwoing: COPY A:\ASPI\IPSSEND.EXE \ and press Enter. Refer to section 3.10 and 3.20 in this README file for information to start and use the IPSSEND utility program. ____________________________________________________________________ 3.0 Instructions for Starting and Using IPSSEND and IPSMON ___________________________________________________________ This section provides the information needed to start and use the IPSSEND and IPSMON utility programs. 3.10 Starting the IPSSEND Utility Program ------------------------------------------ You run the IPSSEND utility program from the operating system command line. To start the IPSSEND program: o If you are using DOS, OS/2, or Windows NT: a. From within the directory that contains the IPSSEND utility program, type: IPSSEND b. Press Enter. o If you are using Novell NetWare: a. From the console, type: LOAD IPSSEND b. Press Enter. o If you are using SCO OpenServer: a. Type: ./ipssend b. Press Enter. 3.20 Using the IPSSEND Utility Program --------------------------------------- When you run the IPSSEND utility program with no command-line parameters, a list of available functions and their specific parameters are provided. All functions require a minimum set of parameters to execute the command. If you run the IPSSEND utility program with a specific function but without its required parameters, specific help for that function will appear on the monitor. 3.30 Starting the IPSMON Utility Program ------------------------------------------ You can run the IPSMON utility program from the operating system command line. To start the IPSMON program: o If you are using DOS, OS/2, or Windows NT: a. From within the directory that contains the IPSSEND utility program, type: IPSMON b. Press Enter. o If you are using Novell NetWare: a. From the console, type: LOAD IPSMON b. Press Enter. o If you are using SCO OpenServer: a. Type: ./ipsmon b. Press Enter. 3.40 Using the IPSMON Utility Program -------------------------------------- When you start this utility program, it immediately begins polling all ServeRAID adapters and controllers for specific conditions. If a condition being monitored is found, this program logs a message to the monitor, to a file, or to both the monitor and a file. The IPSMON program uses command-line parameters to determine where to log the messages. If you need help, you can type the 'IPSMON -?' command for a list of valid parameters. If you start this utility program without any command-line parameters, the IPSMON program will log the messages to a IPSMON.LOG file, and the messages will not appear on the monitor. The valid parameters for IPSMON are: o -f:filename o -s Use the -f parameter to specify the name of the file to record messages. The default filename is IPSMON.LOG. Use the -s parameter to display messages on the standard output (usually the monitor). After you start the IPSMON utility program, the program will continuously poll the ServeRAID adapters and controllers until you press -C. During operation, the program will log various messages. Each message will contain an alert code and a location specifier. o The alert code begins with the message type and number. For example, INF, WRN, or CRT, followed by the message number. o After the alert code comes the location specifier: A specifies the Adapter or controller number B specifies the Bay number (if required) C specifies the Channel number (if required) The IPSMON utility program can log the following messages, based on the required condition: Information Messages: INF000:A1C-B-- no errors detected INF001:A1C-B-- rebuild started INF002:A1C-B-- rebuild completed INF003:A1C-B-- synchronization started INF004:A1C-B-- synchronization completed INF005:A1C-B-- migration started INF006:A1C-B-- migration completed Warning Messages: WRN001:A2C3B12 PFA Error detected Critical Messages: CRT001:A3C2B04 dead drive detected CRT002:A1C-B-- not responding to ioctl commands 4.0 Trademarks and Notices ___________________________ The following terms are trademarks of the IBM Corporation in the United States or other countries or both: IBM Netfinity OS/2 ServeRAID Microsoft, Windows, and Windows NT are trademarks or registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation.
