How to upgrade the IBM 20/40GB 8mm Mammoth Tape drive firmware. (Turn on word wrap for ease of reading.) This page describes the process for upgrading the firmware in the IBM 20/40Gb 8mm Mammoth tape drive. You will need to download the 8CM1V41K.i, and Boot8mm.exe files to complete this action. The 8CM1V41K.i file is of binary format which will not be recognized by internet browsers. To save the file to disk right click on the mouse and select the "save link as" to complete the action. Advantages: You can download it from this web site for free. No special cables are required. Disadvantages: You will need to bring down the system. For example, if the tape drive is connected to a Novell server, you must bring down the server, and boot into a DOS environment with ASPI suppport. For convenience a bootable DOS ASPI support diskette has been created and is available as Boot8mm.EXE on the IBM support site. After booting to DOS change to the directory where Expert was extracted and upload the firmware. Eject media from the drive prior to updating firmware. Note: EXPERT does not run under the Windows NT 32-bit operating system. Therefore, you cannot shell to DOS from Windows NT and use EXPERT. To upgrade your firmware: 1. Extract the Boot8mm.exe file to a diskette. 2. Boot to the Boot8mm.exe diskette image you extracted. 3. The Expert license screen splat will display. Read the license information and press ESC to accept the agreement. 4. Select the SCSI controller that the tape unit is attached to. 5. Select the 8900 unit and press the F2 key. 6. Select update firmware and insert the binary firmware(.i) file into the diskette bay. 7. The process will complete accordingly. Exit the application and restart the system. More details are found in the online help within the Expert.
