BIOS is programming that controls low-level hardware operations, including interactions with diskette drives, hard disk drives, and the keyboard. The BIOS is stored on a chip. Your computer uses flash BIOS, which can be updated through a program on a flash diskette so that you do not have to replace the BIOS chip to update the BIOS. Note: Make note of any settings you have changed in the BIOS Configuration Utility. These settings may have to be re-entered after updating the BIOS. Print this file so that you can refer to it during the installation. Important Note -------------- Installing this update involves creating a BIOS flash CD and running the flash program from the CD. You must have access to a CD-R or CD-RW drive and CD-R software which is capable of creating a CD from an ISO image. Downloading the update ---------------------- 1. Click the file link to download the file from the web page. 2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file. Extracting the update --------------------- 1. Click Start, select Find or Search, then click Files and Folders. 2. Insert a blank 1.44MB floppy diskette into the diskette drive. 3. Type 21jz25usa.exe in the search field, Click Find Now. The necessary files will be extracted to your hard disk drive Create the bootable CD ---------------------- Use your CD-R software's feature for creating a CD from an ISO image; Adaptec Easy CD Creator calls this feature Create CD from CD image. Refer to the help provided with your CD-R software for further assistance. Create a CD from the CD ISO image located in your C:\IBMTOOLS\FLASH\21JZ25US folder. The filename of the ISO image is 21CD25A.ISO. Installing the update --------------------- 1. Close all open applications. 2. Insert the bootable CD into your CD-ROM drive. 3. Shutdown the computer. 4. With the CD still inserted in the CD-ROM drive, power on the system. A menu will appear. 5. Press 0. 6. When you are prompted to select a country, press the number on your keyboard which corresponds to the country in which you are using the computer. For example, press 1 for the United States. 7. Press Enter. You will be prompted with the current serial number of your machine. 8. If the serial number is correct, press N. You will be prompted with the current machine type/model number of your machine. 9. If the machine type/model number is correct, press N. The current BIOS level is compared with that of the update. If the update is of a greater level than on your system, a message is displayed stating "THE POST/BIOS CODE IN THE SYSTEM IS THE SAME VERSION AS THAT ON THE DISKETTE. PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE. PRESS ESC TO CANCEL." 10. Press Enter. 11. Once the Flash update is complete and you are prompted to do so, remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive and press enter to reboot the system. Note: If your system boots back to a 1962 POST error or displays a picture of a diskette on the screen, enter the Setup utility by pressing F1 during startup and change the Startup options to include your hard disk drive.
