Flash BIOS update - bootable diskette version for IBM NetVista 6832 and 6833 systems P9KT21A README This package updates the basic input/output system (BIOS) on NetVista(R) model 6832-xxx and 6833-xxx computers. BIOS is programming that controls low-level hardware operations, including interactions with diskette drives, hard disk drives, and the keyboard. The BIOS is stored on a chip. Your computer uses flash BIOS, which can be updated through a program on a flash diskette so that you do not have to replace the BIOS chip to update the BIOS. This update will take 2MB of space on your hard disk drive (C:). Note: Make note of any settings you have changed in the BIOS Configuration Utility. These settings may have to be re-entered after updating the BIOS. Print this file so that you can refer to it during the installation. Downloading the update ---------------------- 1. Click the file link to download the file from the web page. 2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file. Extracting the update --------------------- Installing this update involves creating a BIOS flash diskette and running the flash program from the diskette. Before you begin, have a blank 1.44 MB diskette ready. 1. Click Start, highlight Find, then click Files and Folders. 2. Insert a blank 1.44MB floppy diskette into the diskette drive. 3. Type p9jt21a.exe in the search box, then click Find Now. This will locate the p9jt21a.exe file you just downloaded. 4. Double-click the icon for p9jt21a.exe. 5. Follow the onscreen prompts. The necessary files will be extracted to the diskette. Installing the update --------------------- 1. Close all open applications. 2. Leave the diskette in the A: drive, and shut down and restart the computer to start the BIOS flash program. You are prompted to select your country. 3. Press Enter. The serial number is displayed and you are asked if you would like to update the serial number. 4. Press N. The machine type/model number is displayed. You are asked if you would like to update the model/type. 5. Press N. The current BIOS level is compared with that of the update. If the update is of a greater level than on your system, a message is displayed stating "THE POST/BIOS CODE IN THE SYSTEM IS THE SAME VERSION AS THAT ON THE DISKETTE. PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE. PRESS ESC TO CANCEL." 6. Press Enter. 7. Once the Flash update is complete and you are prompted to do so, remove the diskette and press enter to reboot the system. WARNING: Do not under any circumstance power off or restart the system during the Flash update procedure. Doing so will critically damage your system. Testing for successful installation ----------------------------------- To verify that the BIOS update was successful, do the following: 1. Click Start, highlight Programs, highlight Access IBM, then click IBM System Information. If IBM System Information is not installed on your system, install it using your Software Selections CD. 2. Verify that the BIOS version is IBM BIOS ver P9KT21A.0. Flash Changes ------------- P9JT21A is the flash diskette level. P9KT21A is the binary image level. (BIOS) NOTE: All changes carry forward.
