Flash BIOS update - LFJT23A for IBM(R) NetVista(R) 6644, 6645, and 6646 computers README This package updates the basic input/output system (BIOS) on NetVista(R) model 6644-xx, 6645-xx, and 6646-xx computers. BIOS is programming that controls low-level hardware operations, including interactions with diskette drives, hard disk drives, and the keyboard. The BIOS is stored on a chip. Your computer uses flash BIOS, which can be updated through a program on a flash diskette so that you do not have to replace the BIOS chip to update the BIOS. Note: Make note of any settings you have changed in the BIOS Configuration Utility. These settings may have to be re-entered after updating the BIOS. Print this file so that you can refer to it during the installation. Downloading the update ---------------------- 1. Click the file link to download the file from the web page. 2. When prompted, select a drive and directory in which to save the downloaded file. Extracting the update --------------------- Installing this update involves creating a BIOS flash diskette and running the flash program from the diskette. Before you begin, have a blank 1.44 MB diskette ready. 1. Click Start, Find, Files and Folders. 2. Insert a blank 1.44MB floppy diskette into the diskette drive. 3. Type lfjt23a.exe in the search box, Click Find Now. This will locate the lfjt23a.exe file you just downloaded. 4. Double-click the icon for lfjt23a.exe. 5. Follow the onscreen prompts. The necessary files will be extracted to the diskette. Installing the update --------------------- 1. Close all open applications. 2. Leave the diskette in the A: drive, and shut down and restart the computer to start the BIOS flash program. 3. When you are prompted to select a country, press the number on your keyboard which corresponds to the country in which you are using the computer. For example, press 1 for the United States. 4. Press Enter. You will be prompted with the current serial number of your machine. 5. If the serial number is correct, press N. You will be prompted with the current machine type/model number of your machine. 6. If the machine type/model number is correct, press N. You will be prompted with the following message: *************************************************************** * Your system can be enabled to use enhanced security. If you * * enable enhanced security, and you lose or forget your * * administrator password, your system board will have to be * * replaced. Do you want to enable enhanced security on your * * system? (Y/N) * *************************************************************** 7. Unless you know exactly what the enhanced security features entail, press N. You will be prompted with the following message: *************************************************************** * Would you like to change the logos displayed during * * startup (Y/N) ? * *************************************************************** 8. Press N. 9. Wait until you see a message stating ****************************** * POST/BIOS update completed * ****************************** ****************************************** * Remove the diskette from the drive and * * Press Enter to restart the system. * ****************************************** 10. Remove the diskette from the diskette drive. 11. Press Enter. Testing for successful installation ----------------------------------- To verify that the BIOS update was successful, do the following: 1. Click Start. 2. Click Programs. 3. Click Access IBM. 4. Click IBM System Information. If IBM System Information is not installed on your system, install it using your Software Selections CD. 5. Verify that the BIOS version is IBM BIOS ver LFKT23.0. Flash Changes ------------- General Information: Models 6644, 6645, and 6646 BIOS are year 2000 ready. LFJTxxA is the flash diskette level. LFKTxxA is the binary image level. (BIOS) NOTE: All changes carry forward.
