This package is required when you install Windows 98 without the Product Recovery CD. What This Package Does ---------------------- Each of the ThinkPad listed below will have some conflicts or problems when you install Windows 98. This package contains some supplement files to solve the conflicts or problems for Windows 98. The following ThinkPad computers are supported: - ThinkPad 570, 570E - ThinkPad X20, X21, X22, X23, X24 To determine if you should update the supplement files, refer to the "Summary of Changes" section. To update the supplement files, refer to the "Installation Guide" section. Installation Guide ------------------ NOTES: - To determine if you should update the supplement files, refer to the "Summary of Changes" section. - If you use the Product Recovery CD shipped with your ThinkPad to restore the Windows 98 preload environment, you do not need this package. This package is required when you install Windows 98 without the Product Recovery CD. INSTALL: Preparation to install Windows 98 --------------------------------- 1. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive. The recommended directory is C:\W98SUPP. (I) How to install Windows 98 Gold (Version 4.10.1998) ------------------------------------------------------ 1. Copy all the cabinet files and installation programs in Windows 98 Gold retail CD-ROM to your hard disk drive. 1-1. Make a temporary directory (for instance, C:\WIN98) and make sure enough hard disk drive space is available to store the cabinet files and installation programs (the required free space varies depending on the language of Windows 98) 1-2. Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from \WIN98 directory of Windows 98 retail CD. Type COPY src_cd:\WIN98\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir and press Enter. src_cd: Drive Letter of CD-ROM drive ( e.g. D:, E: ...) tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: Drive letter and temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN98). 2. Copy updated INF files from W98SUPP directory to the temporary directory. 2-1. Type COPY C:\W98SUPP\W98GOLD\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir and press Enter. tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: Drive Letter and temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN98). 3. Start Installation from the temporary directory. 3-1. Run "Setup.exe" in the temporary directory. 3-2. Refer to the Windows 98 documentation and instructions on the screen to complete the installation. NOTE: ThinkPad X22, X23, and X24 systems should apply INFINST_ENU.EXE in Windows Supplement File ( 1AOC10WW Version 1.10) to configure INTEL Chipset after Step 3. 4. Apply APM2APM.reg information onto Windows 98. 4-1. Boot the system. 4-2. Click Start and then click Run. 4-3. Type C:\W98SUPP\APM2APM\APM2APM.reg and click OK. Following Registry Editor's windows appears. "Are you sure you want to add the information C:\W98SUPP\apm2apm\apm2apm.reg to the registory?" 4-4. Select Yes. Successful windows message is displayed. 4-5. Select OK to exit the registry editor screen. 5. If needed, remove all the files in the temporary directry and the directory itself after installation is completed to save the hard disk drive free space. (II) How to install Windows 98 Second Edition (4.10.2222A) ---------------------------------------------------------- 1. Copy all the cabinet files and installation programs in Windows 98 Second Edition retail CD-ROM to your hard disk drive as follows. 1-1. Make a temporary directory (for instance, C:\WIN98) and make sure enough hard disk drive space is available to store the cabinet files and installation programs (the required free space varies depending on the language of Windows 98). 1-2. Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from \WIN98 directory of Windows 98 CD. Type COPY src_cd:\WIN98\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir and press Enter. src_cd: Drive Letter of CD-ROM drive ( e.g. D:, E: ...) tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: Drive Letter and Temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN98) 2. Type "COPY C:\W98SUPP\W98SE\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir" and press Enter. tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: Drive Letter and temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN98). 3. Start Installation from the temporary directory 3-1. Run "Setup.exe C:\Win98\APMINST.INF" in the temporary directory. 3-2. Refer to the Windows 98 documentation and instructions on the screen to complete the installation. NOTE: ThinkPad X22, X23, and X24 systems should apply INFINST_ENU.EXE in Windows Supplement File ( 1AOC10WW Version 1.10) to configure INTEL Chipset after Step 3 and install other registry files. 4. Apply APM2APM.reg information onto Windows 98. 4-1. Boot the system. 4-2. Click Start and then click Run. 4-3. Type C:\W98SUPP\APM2APM\APM2APM.reg and click OK. Following Registry Editor's windows appears. "Are you sure you want to add the information C:\W98SUPP\apm2apm\apm2apm.reg to the registry?" 4-4. Select Yes. Successful windows message is displayed. 4-5. Select OK to exit the registry editor screen. 5. Apply IBM LCD Color Profile onto Windows 98. 5-1. Click right button on desktop to open Display Properties tab. 5-2. Click Settings tab. 5-3. Click Advanced... 5-4. Select the Monitor tab and then click Change... 5-5. Click Have Disk... 5-6. Specify the directory where ibm_tp.inf and ibm_tp.icm files exist (under C:\W98SUPP directory) and click OK. 5-7. Select ibm_tp.inf and click OK. 5-8. Select one panel in the list you are using now. 5-9. Click Apply. 5-10. Select Color Management tab to make sure ibm_tp.icm file is loaded. 6. If needed, remove all the files in the temporary directory and the directory itself after installation is completed to save the hard disk drive free space.
