IBM ThinkPad June 18, 2000 Utility Driver for Windows 95/98/Me Version 1.03 ======================================================================== What These Packages Does ------------------------ The Utility Driver Disk for Windows 95 provide the following utility programs for Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me with APM: - ThinkPad UltraBay Hot/Warm Swap Driver Supported Models ---------------- - ThinkPad 600, 600E, 600X - ThinkPad 770, 770E, 770ED, 770X, 770Z Released Versions ----------------- Version 1.00 Initial release Version 1.01 Support for new models and new functions Version 1.02 Support for new models Version 1.03 Support for new OS (Windows Me) Summary of Changed or Fixed Items --------------------------------- Where: Package version (for example, 1.00 means Version 1.00) (New) New function or enhancement (Fix) Correction to existing function (Restrictions) Remaining restrictions <1.00> - (New) The ThinkPad UltraBay Hot Swap Driver was regrouped. It was included in the version 4.10 Utility Diskette for Windows 95 previously. - (New) Support for 770E and 770ED. - (New) Support the standard installation and un-installation. - (New) Supported DVD drive. - (Fix) The system will freeze by hot swapping if Control Panel is opened. - (Fix) When the system boots with a CD-ROM drive, hot swapping may not work correctly. - (Fix) When VPOWERD is not enabled, the VxD shows a blue error screen. The resolution and color settings are available. - (Restrictions) When CD-ROM or DVD drive is not installed in the UltraBay and TokenRing card is installed, the hot swapping will fail as a default. To avoid this problem, prior to the hot swapping the TokenRing Card should be set up as other IRQ than IRQ15 (IRQ9 is recommended.) in Resources tab of the TokenRing Properties in Device Manager. <1.01> - (New) Support for 770X. - (New) Support for 600 and 600E, which support warm swapping only. - (New) Changed the driver name to ThinkPad UltraBay Hot/Warm Swap Driver. - (New) Support for SuperDisk(LS-120). <1.02> - (New) Support for 770Z. - (New) Support for 600X. <1.03> - (New) Support Windows Me (APM Mode). Installation Instructions ------------------------- NOTE: If a previous version is already installed, it must be uninstall before installing this update. Use the Add/Remove Program icon in Control panel. Depending on which version of the driver is installed, the driver's name may be different. Please check for both 'Hot Swap Driver' and 'Hot/Warm Swap Driver'. If no item is displayed, follow the << case A >> steps below. (It will happen only when you installed Utility Diskette for Windows 95 V4.10 or earlier, because the uninstall program was not supported at that time.) << Case A >> a. Click 'Start', point to 'Settings', then click 'Control Panel'. b. Double-click the 'System' icon. c. Click the 'Device Manager' tab. d. Select IBM ThinkPad UltraBay and UltraBay Hot Swap Driver then click Properties. 3. Check 'Disable' in hardware profile, then click 'Ok'. f. Restart the operating system. g. Go back to Device Manager and highlight UltraBay Hot Swap Driver, then click the 'Remove' button. h. Restart the operating system. Installing the driver: 1. Start Windows 95/98 2. Extract the drivers onto the hard drive. 3. Click 'Start', point to 'Settings', then click 'Control Panel'. 4. open the 'Add New Hardware' icon. 5. At the 'Begin installing your new hardware window, Select Next. If installing on Windows 95 continue to step 6. If installing on Windows 98/Me do the following: - At the 'search for new Plug and Play devices' windows, click Next. - At the 'Is the device that you want to install listed below?' window, select 'No, the device isn't in the list.' and click on Next. 6. When prompted 'Do you want Windows to search for your new hardware?' choose 'No, I want to select the hardware from a list' and click Next. 7. Under Hardware types, select 'Other devices' and click Next. 8. At the 'Select the manufacturer' window, click the Have Disk button. 9. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\BAYSWAP\. Then click the 'OK' button. The driver list will appear. 10. Select 'ThinkPad UltraBay Hot/Warm Swap Driver' and click Next. 11. Click the Finish button. 12. If you had to follow the steps in << case A >> , you may see the following warning dialog. A file being copied is older than the file currently on your computer. It is recommended that you keep you existing file. .... Do you want to keep this file? Select No to ignore it, and continue the installation. 11. Restart the operating system. DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED -------------------------------------- 1. Start Windows 95/98/Me. (APM) 2. Click 'Start', point to 'Find', then click 'Files or Folders'. 3. Click the 'Name & Location' tab. 4. In the 'Named:' field, type "IBMBAY.VXD". 5. In the 'Look in:' field, specify "Local Hard drives (C:,D:)". 6. Click the 'Find Now' button. Windows will now search your hard drive for ibmbay.vxd. If the file is not found, then the IBM Utility Driver is not installed on your system. 7. In the 'Found' part of the window, select the "IBMBAY.VXD" file located in "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM". 8. Scroll the window to the right and look at the 'Modified' column. The time stamp on the file will be the version number.
