Before installing this program, read carefully how to use this program. 1.0 Installation ----------------- To install this program, follow the instruction below. 1-1 Start Windows NT (V3.51 or higher) on your ThinkPad 1-2 Insert this Utility Diskette into your floppy drive (A:) and go to Windows NT "File Manager". Select drive A on the File Manager menu. 1-3 Double click "INSTDRV.EXE" to run this program. ThinkPad Feature NT device driver is installed in your system. When this driver is installed, following message appears on the NT DOS screen session. "Installation complete for ThinkPad Feature NT driver. Shutdown and restart Windows NT. Run INSTALLN to install ThinkPad Feature program after Windows NT is started." Note: If you have already installed old version ThinkPad Features and running Fuel Gauge program, close this program before installing the device driver. If not, "DLL load error" message will appears. 1-4 Shutdown and restart Windows NT. Go to Windows NT "File Manager" and select drive A. Double click "INSTALLN.EXE" to proceed to install the ThinkPad Feature program. Follow the instruction appears on the screen. 1-5 Logoff Windows NT and log on again to start using ThinkPad Feature program. Fuel Gauge program icon will be automatically created and will become active on the screen. 2.0 Using ThinkPad Features ----------------------------------------- This section describes how to use the ThinkPad Features, Fuel Gauge Program and Personalization Editor. Refer to ThinkPad Features Online Help for the general information. This section contains some unique information associated with Windows NT environment which are not included in the Online Help. 2-1 Fuel Gauge program ---------------------- On the fuel gauge screen, clicking the "suspend icon" will let the system going to suspend. But this function is not recommended to use because of the following reasons: Set the system going into suspend mode will cause erroneous situation on NT such as delay of Time of day clock during suspend and erroneous power down for certain internal devices after resuming the system. To avoid this situation, set the system going into stand-by by pressing Fn+F3 key whenever you leave the machine unattended during the battery mode operation. There is a "hibernation" icon on the same menu but using the hibernation function is not recommended because of the same reason of suspend. 2-2 Suspend/Resume options at Power Mode Setting ------------------------------------------------ If you set "Will not suspend even if LCD is closed" as an option at Suspend/Resume options on power mode icon menu, this option is used as the following manner on Windows NT environment: This option allows not only inhibiting the suspend operation at LCD is closed, but also inhibiting ANY suspend condition such as Fn+F4 suspend key, suspend selection at battery gauge icon menu, automatic suspend with suspend timer and low battery suspend. To set this mode effective, click this option on the menu and "save" it. Then shutdown and restart NT. When you boot NT, this mode becomes effective. WARNING: YOU MUST MANUALLY SHUTDOWN THE SYSTEM WHEN LOW BATTERY CONDITION OCCURS. SYSTEM DOES NOT GO TO SUSPEND AUTOMATICALLY AT LOW POWER BATTERY. 2-3 Inhibiting suspend operation -------------------------------- You can inhibit the automatic timer suspend operation using the "Power" mode menu on ThinkPad Features. Unless you specify "Will not suspend even if LCD is closed" option at suspend/resume option, it is required at least to set the following power mode in order to avoid going to suspend: - Set the "Power Mode" to "Customized" - Set the "Suspend time" to "0" (disable timer suspend) Save the above option in the Power Mode menu. - Click "Fuel gauge" icon to open the fuel gauge program - Double click the "Current Power Mode" icon until power mode icon changes to "Customized" mode. Customized power mode is now becomes effective. Disabling automatic suspend will avoid the erroneous situation occurring on Windows NT. This is minimum thing that should be done in order to avoid automatic suspend either in AC power mode or battery power mode. 2-4 Using Personalization Editor -------------------------------- Using the Personalization Editor, you can create your own personal information, editing bitmap data. Windows NT Paintbrush is operational with personalization editor. When you finish creating the personal data, data must be saved in the ThinkPad Utility Diskette 2 which is supplied as a part of set of Utility Diskette. Please make sure that you prepare Utility Diskette 2 which is separately released. This Windows NT ThinkPad Feature install diskette does not include the function available in Utility Diskette 2, such as storing the personalization data into ThinkPad nonvolatile memory. 2-5 Others ---------- Although ThinkPad Feature provide you almost the same menu for device mode setting, it does not mean that all device are supported under NT. For example, enabling Infrared Port by this program does not mean that you can use Infrared port. Without installing the necessary device drivers and application program, it is not possible to use the infrared port. As of today, there is no infrared device drivers/application program run on NT. So, setting this port enabled is not meaningful. Device mode setting menu does not always provide you the all device can be available under Windows NT.
