What This Package Does ---------------------- This package provides the Ethernet driver for Windows 98/98 SE and NT 4.0. The Ethernet driver enables or updates the Ethernet function of the following adapters on the following ThinkPad computers. One of the following Ethernet device is integrated into your ThinkPad depending on your ThinkPad model. - Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection (10/100 Ethernet) or - Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection (Gigabit Ethernet) This release supports the following systems: - ThinkPad R40 (10/100 Ethernet) - ThinkPad T40, T41, T42 - ThinkPad X31, X32(*4), X40(*4) Note: *4: Windows 98/98 SE are not supported. To determine if you should update the Ethernet driver, refer to the "Summary of Changes" section. To update the Ethernet driver, refer to the "Installation Instructions" section. Windows 98/98 SE UPDATE INSTALL: To update the driver, 1. Extract this package onto your hard disk drive. 2. Start Windows 98/98 SE. 3. Click "Start", select "Settings", and click "Control Panel". 4. Double-click "System" icon. 5. Click "Device Manager" tab. 6. Click "+" mark to expand "Network adapters". 7. Right-click one of the following devices in "Network adapters" and click "Properties". "Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection" "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection" 8. Click "Driver" tab. 9. Click "Update Driver..." button. 10. Click "Next >" button in "Update Device Driver Wizard" dialog box. 11. Select "Search for a better driver than the one your device is using now. (Recommended)". 12. Click "Next >" button. 13. Select "Specify a location:" only. 14. Specify the path to one of the following sub-directories with the full path name where you extracted the package in step 1 in "Specify a location:". Click "Next >" button. The driver installation starts. 18. Click "Finish" button when the installation completes. 19. Click "Yes" when prompted to restart the computer. CLEAN INSTALL: (Add New Hardware Wizard) If this is the first time to boot Windows 98/98 SE, the OS detects the Ethernet Controller automatically. To install the device driver, follow the instructions below. 1. Extract this package onto your hard drive. 2. Start Windows 98/98 SE. 3. It displays "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box. 4. Click "Next >" button. 5. Select "Search for the best driver for your device. (recommended)". 6. Click "Next >" button. 7. Select "Specify a location:" only. 8. Specify the path to one of the following sub-directories with the full path name where you extracted the package in step 1 in "Specify a location:". Click "Next >" button. The driver installation starts. 12. Click "Finish" button when the installation completes. 13. Click "Yes" when prompted to restart the computer. CLEAN INSTALL: (PCI Ethernet Controller in Other devices) Windows 98/98 SE detected the PCI Ethernet Controller, but was not able to find the correct device driver. In this case, you will see Ethernet Controller in Other devices in Device Manager. To install the driver, follow the instructions below. 1. Extract this package onto your hard drive. 2. Start Windows 98/98 SE. 3. Click "Start", select "Settings", and click "Control Panel". 4. Double-click "System" icon. 5. Click "Device Manager" tab. 6. Right-click "PCI Ethernet Controller" in "Other devices" and click "Properties". 7. Click "Driver" tab. 8. Click "Update Driver..." button. 9. Click "Next >" button in "Update Device Driver Wizard" dialog box. 10. Select "Search for a better driver than the one your device is using now. (recommended)". 11. Click "Next >" button. 12. Click "Start", select "Settings", and click "Control Panel". 4. Double-click "Network" icon. 5. Click "Adapters" tab. 6. Select one of the following devices. Specify the path to one of the following sub-directories with the full path name where you extracted the package in step 1 in "Windows NT Setup" dialog box. Click "Yes" when prompted to restart the computer. Ethernet Power Management Driver (NDIS PM Interface) a. Start Windows NT 4.0. b. Click "Start", select "Settings", and click "Control Panel". c. Double-click "Network" icon. d. Click "Services" tab. e. Select "NDIS PM Interface". f. Click "Update" button. g. Specify the path to sub-directory "NPMINT40" with the full path name where you extracted the package in step 1 in "Insert Disk" dialog box. h. Click "Continue" button. i. Click "Close" button. j. Click "Yes" when prompted to restart the computer. CLEAN INSTALL: Ethernet Device Driver 1. Extract this package onto your hard drive. 2. Start Windows NT 4.0. 3. Click "Start", select "Settings", and click "Control Panel". 4. Double-click "Network" icon. It displays "Network Configuration" dialog box if this is the first time to configure the Network. If not, go to step 20. First Network Configuration 5. Click "Yes" button. 6. Select "Wired to the network". 7. Click "Next" button. 8. Click "Select from list" button. 9. Click "Have Disk..." button. 10. Specify the path to one of the following sub-directories with the full path name where you extracted the package in step 1 in "Insert Disk" dialog box. Click "Next >" button. 15. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen. 16. Follow the prompts for any Windows NT installation disks by typing the path to the directory that contains Windows NT files. (It is usually c:\i386 directory or Windows NT CD-ROM's x:\i386 directory.) 17. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen. 18. Click "Finish" button when the installation completes. 19. Click "Yes" when prompted to restart the computer. Add Ethernet to Network Configuration 20. Click "Adapters" tab. 21. Click "Add" button. 22. Click "Have Disk..." button. 23. Specify the path to one of the following sub-directories with the full path name where you extracted the package in step 1 in "Insert Disk" dialog box. "PRO100\WINNT4" (for "Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection") "PRO1000\WINNT4" (for "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection") 24. Click "OK" button. 25. Select one of the following adapters. "Intel(R) PRO/100 Family Adapter" (for "Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection") "Intel(R) PRO/1000 Family Adapter" (for "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection") 26. Click "OK" button. 27. Click "Close" button. 28. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen. 29. Click "Yes" when prompted to restart the computer. Ethernet Power Management Driver (NDIS PM Interface) a. Start Windows NT 4.0. b. Click "Start", select "Settings", and click "Control Panel". c. Double-click "Network" icon. d. Click "Protocols" tab. e. Click "Add" button. f. Click "Have Disk..." button. g. Specify the path to sub-directory "NPMINT40" with the full path name where you extracted the package in step 1 in "Insert Disk" dialog box. h. Click "OK" button. i. Select "NDIS PM Interface". j. Click "OK" button. k. Click "Close" button. l. Click "Yes" when prompted to restart the computer. Intel PROSet II Installation ---------------------------- Windows 98/98 SE 1. Execute "PROSet.exe" in the following folder: \APPS\PROSet\WIN98SEME 2. Click "Next >" button. 6. Click "I accept the terms in the license agreement" and click "Next >" button. 7. Select "Typical" and click "Next >" button. 8. Click "Install" button. 9. Click "Finish" button. Note: In Windows NT 4.0, the device driver installation installs Intel PROSet II automatically. Unattended Installation ----------------------- DOS drivers for unattended installation: For customers who need unattended installation, the following DOS drivers are included in another package (1URDxxWW package). The DOS drivers can be used only for this purpose. E100B.DOS for "Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection" E1000.DOS for "Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Mobile Connection" Unattended installation instructions: The information about unattended installation instructions are included in "APPS\SETUP\PUSH" sub-directory in this package. Windows NT 4.0: E1000NT4.sys Windows 98/98 SE: e1000w9x.sys To check the version of the device driver that is installed on your system, follow the instructions below: 1. Right-click the My Computer icon. 2. Click Find. 3. Type one of the NDIS driver names in Named: field. For example, if you are using Gigabit Ethernet model in Windows NT 4.0, type E1000NT4.sys in the field. 4. Click on the Find Now button. 5. It lists the NDIS driver(s). If it does not list the NDIS driver, the Ethernet device driver is not installed in your system. 6. Right-click on the NDIS driver that is found in the Windows folder. 7. Click on the Properties. 8. Click on the Version tab. 9. Click on the Product Version in the Items name: field.
