What This Package Does ----------------------- This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the system BIOS program stored in certain ThinkPad i Series systems to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following systems: - ThinkPad i Series 1200 Machine type 1161 - 1**, 41*, 42*, 5**, 61*, 62*, 71*, 72*, 91*, 92* - ThinkPad i Series 1300 Machine type 1171 - 2**, 5** except 5CU and 5X*, 6** except 6MU and 6XU, 7** except 7XG, 8** except 8MU and 8XU, 9** except 9MU and 9X* The supported operating systems for this update utility are as follows: - Windows 98, 98 Second Edition and Me - Windows 2000 *1 1171-21U/2AU/71U supports Windows Me/2000 only. To determine if you should update the system program, refer to the "Summary of Changes" section. To update the system program, refer to the "Installation Instructions" section. Installation Instructions ------------------------- NOTES: - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program. - If your computer is attached to any kind of USB port hub, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Before using this BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends applying the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887. 1. Print these instructions or display them on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows 98/Me/2000 on the target computer. 4. Make the temporary directory on the hard drive (for example, C:\Temp) 5. Download the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the web site and store the file into the temporary directory. (for example, C:\Temp) 6. Click Start, then click Run. 7. In the Open dialogue box, specify the utility filename with the full path name where you stored ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility. (for example, C:\Temp\filename.exe) Then press the Enter key. 8. Follow the instructions on screen. When completed, windows shuts down automatically and the System Program Service Utility screen appears. 9. When prompted press the '1' key to update the system program. 10. Follow the instructions onscreen Warning: Do not turn off the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
