Please get an additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 (or higher), and update Embedded Controller Program in the system with it if necessary. - If you should update Embedded Controller Program as well as the BIOS, update Embedded Controller Program first. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. What This Package Does ---------------------- This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following system: - ThinkPad X31 The supported operating systems are as follows: - Windows 98 - Windows 98 Second Edition(*1) - Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 or later - Windows 2000 - Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional) (Note) *1: Before using the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends that you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web Site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Summary of Changes section. To update the BIOS, refer to the Updating BIOS section. (New) New Function or Enhancement (Fix) Correction to existing function <1.00b (1QET31WW)> NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 (or higher). - (New) Support for ThinkPad X31. <1.01 - 1.01 (1QET32WW)> NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 (or higher). - (New) The design of Access IBM Predesktop Area screen, is changed to prevent the system from going into suspend or hibernation mode. - (Fix) Models with the IBM Security Chip installed, selecting some items in IBM BIOS Setup Utility may cause the system to hang if the IBM Security Chip option is Enabled. - (Fix) Some of the memory controller settings are changed. <1.02 - 1.02 (1QET33WW)> NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 (or higher). - (New) Pressing F11 key at power-on time can run IBM Product Recovery program, as well as pressing the Access ThinkPad button. - (Fix) (Windows 98) If the system goes into suspend or hibernation mode while it accesses the hard disk drive, resuming may cause the system to hang. - (Fix) The Processor family value in the SMBIOS for Intel Pentium M processor is changed. Updating BIOS ------------- Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - If a USB Diskette drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows 98 or start Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive. 5. Click the Start button, then click Run. 6. Specify the file name with the full path name where you extracted the package. (e.g. C:\Temp\1QUJ03US.EXE) Then click OK. NOTE: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\1QUJ03US.EXE -s -a -s) The BIOS will be updated without any user interaction. 7. Follow the instructions on the screen. Windows will shutdown automatically and the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears. 8. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 9. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 10. Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen. Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Initializing BIOS ----------------- In some cases, it may be a good idea to initialize the BIOS when you have some troubles. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press the F9 key to load the default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. BIOS Information ---------------- Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following BIOS. Supported versions of Embedded Controller Program are shown below as well. The versions of BIOS and Embedded Controller Program can be viewed by entering IBM BIOS Setup Utility. Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by BIOS and others. C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS D0000-D3FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS (Note) *2: This area is free when USB BIOS is disabled. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D4000-DBFFF But certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
