Please get an additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher), and update Embedded Controller Program in the system with it if necessary. - If you update Embedded Controller Program as well as the BIOS, update Embedded Controller Program first. - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. What This Package Does ---------------------- This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following system: - ThinkPad X30 The supported operating systems are as follows: - Windows 98 - Windows 98 Second Edition(*1) - Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 or later - Windows 2000 - Windows XP (Home Edition and Professional) NOTE *1: Before using the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility with Windows 98 Second Edition, IBM recommends that you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from the Microsoft Web Site Knowledge Base Article ID Q239887. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Summary of Changes section. To update the BIOS, refer to the Updating BIOS section. The BIOS internal ID is for administrator purpose. (New) New Function or Enhancement (Fix) Correction to existing function <1.00c (1KET39WW)> NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (New) Support for ThinkPad X30. <1.01 (1KET40WW)> NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (Fix) (Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0) A resume password prompt is overridden by the Windows Desktop when the system goes into suspend mode and then resumes normal operation by timer or incoming call. - (Fix) (Windows 98) A resume password prompt on the external display screen is corrupted when the system resumes normal operation from standby mode. <1.02 - 1.02 (1KET41WW)> NOTE: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.00 (or higher). - (Fix) (Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98) After the system resumed normal operation from standby mode with the LCD panel closed, the LCD has a blank screen when the LCD panel is opened. - (Fix) The boot order of 'Network' device in the Startup menu of the IBM BIOS Setup Utility automatically becomes last after the BIOS update. - (Fix) (DOS) Usable memory size for DOS programs become about 40 KB smaller when the system is booted with a USB CD-ROM drive. - (Fix) (DOS) Read and write performance of USB diskette drive will be slow when a DOS memory manager like as EMM386 is installed. Updating BIOS ------------- NOTES: - As written on LCCM Compatibility and Configuration Guide, remove the Power-on password prior to flashing the BIOS in LCCM (LANClient Control Manager) or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows 98 or start Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Extract this package onto the hard disk drive. 5. Click the Start button, then click Run. 6. Specify the file name with the full path name where you extracted the package. (e.g. C:\Temp\1KUJ02US.EXE) 7. Then click OK. Hint: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\1KUJ02US.EXE -s -a -s) BIOS is updated without any user interaction. 8. Follow the instructions on the screen. Windows shutting down automatically and ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears. 9. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 10. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 11. Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen. Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Initializing the BIOS --------------------- In some cases, it may be a good idea to try BIOS initialization when you have some troubles. To initialize the BIOS settings, 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the Press F1 for IBM BIOS Setup Utility message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press F10 key to save default configuration. 7. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. Determining which version is installed -------------------------------------- Each version of the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility contains the following BIOS. Also the supported versions of Embedded Controller Program are shown below. The BIOS version and the date can be viewed by entering IBM BIOS Setup Utility. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the Press F1 for IBM BIOS Setup Utility message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check BIOS Version and BIOS Date. Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by BIOS and others. C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS D0000-D3FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*1) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS NOTE: *1 This area is free when USB BIOS is disabled. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D4000-DBFFF But certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System.
