What This Diskette Does ----------------------- This System Program Service Diskette updates the system BIOS program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. (New) New Function or Enhancement (Fix) Correction to existing function <1.00 - IRET14WW> - (Fix) Entering IBM BIOS Setup Utility by pressing F1 key is too slow. - (Fix) Incorrect installed memory information at IBM BIOS Setup Utility. - (Fix) Supervisor password accepts more than 8 unnecessary characters. - (Fix) Audio volume setting is reset after reboot. - (Fix) Remove unnecessary debug statement in Power-on Self Test (POST) when Startup screen is disabled at BIOS setup. - (Fix) The battery life becomes worse because the MPU clock throttling function is sometimes disabled. <1.02 - IRET17WW> - (New) Mute key (Fn + Backspace keys) can disable POST beep sound. - (Fix) The LCD display screen intermittently becomes white out when standby mode key (Fn + F3 keys) then any key are pressed quickly. - (Fix) ThinkPad Configuration program displays wrong System Unit Serial Number and System Board Serial Number. - --- New type of LCD display panel. <1.04 - IRET19WW> - (Fix) (The U.S.A. keyboard model only) Powering on the system immediately after attaching a battery pack or AC adapter may cause the system to intermittently reboot. - (Fix) (The Japanese keyboard model only) The key of @ (at mark) does not work as the Enter key when the numeric keypad is enabled. <1.05 - IRET42WW> - (Fix) (Windows 2000 Beta 3) Cannot use the Hibernation Timer. - (Fix) (Windows 2000 Beta 3) Cannot access CardBus cards. - (Fix) (Windows 2000 Beta 3) Cannot print out any data after resuming normal operation from suspend mode. - (Fix) (Windows 2000 Beta 3) Cannot access the diskette drive after resuming normal operation from suspend mode. - (Fix) (Windows 2000 Beta 3) No audio sounds after resuming normal operation from suspend mode. - (Fix) (Windows 2000 Beta 3) Cannot use the standard game port. <1.06 - IRET60WW> - (New) Support for ThinkPad 240 3xx model. - (Fix) The system enters standby or suspend mode by depressing the Ctrl+Alt+F3 or Ctrl+Alt+F4 keys, respectively. - (Fix) Redi-Safe function is slow. - (Fix) The system hangs without any warning message when additional memory is installed and the system enters hibernation mode. - (Fix) When the system boots with a PC-DOS's non-system diskette, the system will prompt to replace it with a system (bootable) diskette. But the system does not boot from the bootable diskette (and will boot from the drive C). <1.08 - IRET62WW> - (New) Setting for Modem for Legacy OS is added in Advanced Setup menu of IBM BIOS Setup Utility. - (New) Support for Command Prompt Utility (PS2.EXE). - (Fix) (Windows NT 4.0) The system intermittently hangs with blue screen error if PowerProfiler for Windows NT 4.0 (Power Management support software) is running. - (Fix) L2 Cache remains disabled when the system resumes normal operation from suspend mode. - (Fix) Startup order of boot devices in IBM BIOS Setup Utility could be changed only by the + or - key of the U.S.A. keyboard layout. Now F5 and F6 keys can be used, instead. <1.10 - IRET64WW> - (New) Power Management Update - enhancement of CPU thermal controls designed to take effect during abnormal or fault conditions of the system. - (Fix) Screen Blanking option in IBM BIOS Setup Utility has the opposite result of the setting; If enabled, the screen should be turned off by LCD off Timer, but it does not. If disabled, the screen should not be turned off, but it does. <1.11 - IRET70WW> - (New) Support for Windows 2000. - (New) The duration of interruption of video and audio playback is improved when Fn+F7 keys are pressed to change the display switching. - (Fix) The help message of Screen Blanking option in IBM BIOS Setup Utility is partially wrong. - (Fix) Some of SM (System Management) BIOS information is invalid. - (Fix) The resume timer does not work with the date specified. - (Fix) (Windows 98) After the LCD is closed to let the system goes into the suspend mode and the system resumes normal operation from the suspend mode by ring indicator, the system never automatically goes into suspend mode again. - (Fix) The improper error message, "previous boot incomplete", is displayed when the system goes into hibernation mode and the hard disk is replaced. (The system indicator may remain blinking after the system enters hibernation mode.) <1.12 - IRET71WW> - (Fix) (Windows NT) Microsoft Outlook on the screen flickers when PowerProfiler for Windows NT 4.0 (Power Management support software) is running. - (Fix) PS2 TPoint Disable command for disabling the TrackPoint also disables the keyboard. <1.13 - IRET72WW> - (New) Support for a way to discharge the battery completely to preserve battery operating time correctly. (Information) Previously, there was no way to discharge the battery pack completely. This is occasionally necessary for the smart type of battery to be able to preserve battery operating time correctly by adjusting the remaining battery life. Now, with this release of the BIOS, you can let the battery adjust by discharging it completely. If you feel the operating time for a fully charged battery pack is short, please try to do the following; 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Connect the AC adapter to the computer and let it charge until the battery status lamp becomes green. 3. Detach the AC adapter from the computer. 4. Turn on the computer and press the F1 key while the message 'Press F1 for IBM BIOS setup Utility' appears. The system will enter IBM BIOS Setup Utility automatically. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 5. Leave the computer powered-on until the computer is shut down. 6. When the computer is shut down, connect the AC adapter to the computer. 7. Use the computer as usual. - (New) Support for Windows Me (added). <1.14 - IRET73WW> - (Fix) (DOS) Reboot by BIOS-call function causes the system to hang. <1.15 - IRET74WW> - (New) Add the option to hide "Press F1 for IBM BIOS Setup Utility" in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility during the system boot. (IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu -> Startup -> BIOS Setup Prompt (F1 Key Message) : Enabled/Disabled) <1.16 - IRET75WW> - (Fix) Circular images may appear at the lower right corner of IBM BIOS Setup Utility screen. - (New) Support for Windows XP (added). <1.17 - IRET76WW> - (Fix) When the LCD panel is closed, power management function may not work correctly. <1.18 - IRET77WW> - (Fix) (Windows 2000/XP) DTR and RTS signal levels in the serial port are always HIGH. Updating System Program ----------------------- NOTES: - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program. - Make sure the System Program Service Diskette is write-protected. 1. Print these instructions or display them on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer. 4. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 6. Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen. Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed and system has restarted, do the following to make the changes effective. 7. Make sure the System Program Service Diskette is removed from the diskette drive, then turn off the computer. 8. Turn on the computer and press the F1 key while the message 'Press F1 for IBM BIOS setup Utility' appears. The system enters IBM BIOS Setup Utility automatically. 9. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 10. Press the F9 key. 11. Select Yes to load the default configuration. 12. Press the F10 key. 13. Select Yes. 14.
