What This Diskette Does ----------------------- This System Program Service Diskette updates the system BIOS program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This release supports the following systems: - ThinkPad 390E To determine if you should update the system program, refer to the "Summary of Changes" section. To update the system program, refer to the "Installation Instructions" section. (New) New Function or Enhancement (Fix) Correction to existing function <1.03 - R00_F4> - (New) Support for ThinkPad 390E. <1.05 - R00_G2> - The default setting of HV Expansion option in IBM BIOS Setup Utility is changed from 'Off' to 'On'. So the video is expanded to fill the whole LCD screen. - (Fix) The system can hang if the AC adapter is attached/detached while hibernation is processing. - (Fix) If the power is off at IBM BIOS Setup Utility, Wake on LAN function does not work. - (Fix) (Windows 95) The system without the internal MODEM can't recognize the EtherJet in the Port Replicator with Advanced EtherJet Feature at warm docking. - (Fix) (Windows 98) If the TrackPoint is disabled in IBM BIOS Setup Utility, the serial mouse doesn't work during Windows 98 installation. - (Fix) After IBM BIOS Setup Utility is called by pressing the F1 key, the IBM Turbo 16/4 Token-Ring PC Card may not be recognized if installed. - (Fix) If neither Modem Ring driver nor CardWorks is installed, the modem function does not work. - (Fix) If the Port Replicator with Advanced EtherJet feature is attached to the system, noises sound. - (Fix) With Wake on LAN feature enabled, the system does not wake up remotely via the LAN after the system is rebooted. - (Fix) The system does not support 'Power-on password update over the LAN' nor 'Setup password update over the LAN' features. However, the system returns incorrect information to client control program as if both features are supported. - (Fix) (Windows 95 Japanese) The system may hang when Fn key function is used. - (Fix) (PC-DOS 2000 Japanese) The system can't enter suspend and hibernation mode when CardSoft software is installed. - (Fix) (Windows 95 Chinese) The system does not turn off the LCD screen when Fn + F3 keys are pressed. <1.11 - R00_H1> - (Fix) (Windows 98) Resume timer function in the scheduled task menu does not work. <1.15 - R00_H5> - Modified displaying the error report from hard disk S.M.A.R.T. function. - (Fix) When the LCD timer is set to 60 minutes, it will turn off the LCD after only 30 minutes. - (Fix) The hibernation function does not work correctly with hard disks over 8 GB. - (Fix) (Windows 98) The system may lock when resuming from hibernation. - (Fix) (Windows 98) During the installation of Windows 98, moving the mouse may cause the system to hang. - (Fix) A password on the second hard disk cannot be set when both the power on password and hard drive 1 passwords are enabled. - (Fix) RPL may fail using the Turbo 16/4 Token-Ring PC card. <1.18 - R00_H8> - (Fix) (Windows 95) When a system without an internal MODEM is warm attached to the Port Replicator with Advanced EtherJet Feature, the EtherJet device in the Port Replicator may have a '!' mark in Device Manager. <1.21 - R00_I1> - (New) (Windows NT 4.0) Support for ThinkPad Fuel Gauge program for Windows NT 4.0. To use the Fuel Gauge program, please get the another package, "Fuel Gauge for Windows NT 4.0", and install it. <1.27 - R01_A3> - (Fix) (Windows 95/98) When the system is attached to the Port Replicator with the Advanced EtherJet Feature, the audio device base I/O address will occasionally change <1.29 - R01_A5> - (Fix) Sometimes the system can hang up at ThinkPad logo screen during booting. - (Fix) (Windows NT 4.0) If the password is set, the system doesn't show password prompt when the system resumes from suspend. However the user still can key in the password. <1.31 - R01_A7> - (Fix) System will sometimes hang at ThinkPad logo screen when it is attached to the Port Replicator with Advanced EtherJet Feature <1.33 - R01_A9> - (Fix) After resuming from suspend, Motorola wireless modem intermittently cannot communicate with the system. <1.38 - R01_B4> - (Fix) Under Windows 98, the system doesn't enter hibernation mode when the hibernation file is created on a partition larger than 8 GB. - (Fix) The 3COM 10/100 CardBus card (3CCFE575BT) is not recognized in DOS when the system is connected to the port replicator. The system may also experience intermittent hangs when booting Windows 95 in this configuration. - (Fix) Cannot use the '+' key to modify the startup sequence in the BIOS setup menu with a non-US Keyboard, so added F5/F6 to have the same function as the +/- keys. - (Fix) If the Supervisor or Hard Disk Drive password is set, applications will not launch after resuming from suspend. <1.42 - R01_B8> - (New) Support for Windows 2000. - (New) BIOS date is now shown in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu. - (Fix) The system will not boot by Wake on LAN (WOL) because the hard drive is disabled with a ! mark in the Network Startup menu. The hard drive cannot be enabled by pressing the Shift+1 key. - (Fix) (Windows 95/98) The system hangs with the Port Replicator with Advanced EtherJet Feature when: 1. Press Fn+F12 keys to go into hibernation mode. 2. Detach the Port Replicator. 3. Power on the computer. 4. Press Fn+F12 keys to go into the hibernation mode again. 5. Attach the Port Replicator. 6. Power on the computer, then the system hangs. - (Fix) The password can't be input with the external numeric keypad. - (Fix) The screen may become pink when playing DVD. - (Fix) (Windows 98 Second Edition) The system hangs with blue screen if multiple hardware profiles are created and when the system goes into hibernation mode and then resumes normal operation. - (Fix) If the AC adapter is removed while the system is in suspend mode, the screen may become distorted or the system may hang while trying to resume normal operations. - (Fix) (Windows 95) With the Power-on Password installed, when resuming normal operation from suspend mode, waiting for a long time and then entering the password, no icons are shown on the task bar and the screen is frozen. - --- Conforming for a new type of 14.1 inch LCD panel. <1.44 - R01_C0> - (New) Power Management Update - enhancement of CPU thermal controls designed to take effect during abnormal or fault conditions of the system. <1.48 - R01_C4> - (Fix) In Windows NT, the IBM 10/100 EtherJet CardBus Adapter does not work. - (Fix) Windows NT may not be able to recognize CardBus PC Card under the dual boot environment with Windows 98. - (Fix) If a partition is deleted from the hard disk and then the hibernation partition is created, the system will hang up when powered on. - (Fix) When the IDT (Independent Display Timing) function for the external monitor option is enabled and the display output is switched between the LCD and external monitor, the screen resolution on the external monitor is changed. The display switching function should not work when the IDT function is enabled or the video output is used. - (Fix) If the system is attached to the Port Replicator with Advanced EtherJet Feature. and has 256MB of memory or more, network functions will not work correctly. - (Fix) When a CD/DVD is inserted into the CD-ROM/DVD drive, the CD-ROM/DVD drive motor may never stop running. - --- Conforming for a new revision of video chip. <1.49 - R01_C5> - (Fix) When the system is using the Xircom RBE-100 network card in battery operation, the performance of network data transfer in 100M bps mode is slow. - (New) Support for Windows Me (added). <1.50 - R01_C6> - (Fix) Double-clicking with the external mouse may not work when the LCD panel is closed and opened. <1.51 - R01_C6> - (Fix) To aid in increasing main battery life. In order to activate this fix perform the following steps after you complete the BIOS update. 1. Power off the computer. 2. Disconnect the AC Adapter, then remove the battery pack. 3. Wait for five seconds. 4. Insert the battery pack. These steps need to be completed only once with the System Program Service Diskette version 1.51 or later. Once you have completed these steps, you will not need to follow these steps for any future BIOS releases. Installation Instructions ------------------------- Notes: - As written on LCCM Compatibility and Configuration Guide, remove the Power-on password prior to flashing the BIOS in LCCM environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS system program. - If your computer is attached to any kind of port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display them on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer. 4. When prompted press the '1' key to update the system program. Warning: Do not turn off the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, do the following to make the changes effective. 5. Make sure the System Program Service Diskette is removed from the diskette drive, then press and hold the power switch for more than 5 seconds to turn off the computer. 6. Turn on the computer with pressing F1 key. The system enters IBM BIOS Setup Utility automatically. 7. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 8. Press F9 key. 9. Select Yes to load default configuration. 10. Press F10 key. 11. Select Yes. 12. The system restart automatically. If you updated the BIOS with the System Program Service Diskette version 1.51 or later, do the following also. 1. Power off the computer. 2. Disconnect the AC Adapter, then remove the battery pack. 3. Wait for five seconds. 4. Insert the battery pack. These steps need to be completed only once with the System Program Service Diskette version 1.51 or later. Once you have completed these steps, you will not need to follow these steps for any future BIOS releases. Refer to <1.51 - R01_C6> in the "Summary of Changes" section for the details.
