RECOVERY INFORMATION ==================== Please read this entire information file. The Recovery CD will obtain recovery information from your internal CD-ROM. If your ThinkPad computer model does not support an internal CD-ROM, additional external CD-ROM alternatives will be offered. They include: 1) IBM Portable CD-ROM Drive CD-20X 2) Panasonic 783 Portable CD-ROM Drive If an internal CD-ROM is available, it must be used rather than an external CD-ROM. Recovery supports only one CD drive at a time. For ThinkPad 570 attached to the ThinkPad 570 Ultra Base, the internal CD-ROM must be used, if present. 1. Preload recovery limitations when using PCMCIA CD-ROMs --------------------------------------------------------- Only the original PCMCIA slots on your computer are supported. Do not use the PCMCIA slots of any port replicator or docking station to attach the supported CD-ROM drives. Undock the computer to be restored before using the Recovery Boot Diskette and any of the supported PCMCIA CD-ROM drives. 2. How to reset the recovery process ------------------------------------ The recovery program maintains a log of each step completed during preload restoration. If the recovery process is interrupted (for example, if the power is turned off, or if the computer is restarted) before completion, the log must be reset. If you do not reset the log, the recovery program will attempt to continue from the last completed step and unpredictable results will occur. To reset the log, restart the computer with the Recovery Boot Diskette inserted in the diskette drive and press F5 at the "Starting Windows 95..." logo. Then type RESETC and press the Enter key at the DOS command prompt. 3. Recovery limitations ----------------------- WARNING: BACKUP ALL VITAL DATA BEFORE CONTINUING! All data on the hard drive will be destroyed if "Factory Default Partitioning and Format All Drives" is chosen. All data only on the C: drive will be destroyed if "Use Existing Partitioning and Format C: Drive Only" is chosen. If the C: drive (the primary partition) is formatted as FAT32 and "Use Existing Partitioning and Format C: Drive Only" is chosen, the recovery process will fail. THE RECOVERY PROCESS DOES NOT SUPPORT FAT32 ON C: DRIVE (THE PRIMARY PARTITION). If the C: drive has been formatted using FAT32, use "Factory Default Partitioning and Format All Drives" to recover the preload. If after image recovery FAT32 is desired for the C: drive, use Windows 98's "Drive Converter" tool to accomplish this. To access the drive converter tool, choose "START" -> "Programs" -> Accessories" -> "System Tools" -> "Drive Converter (FAT 32)" from the Windows 98 desktop. The recovery process is designed to restore to one (1) hard drive only. Ensure the hard drive to be recovered is located in the ThinkPad and not attached to the Ultrabay or a Docking station. The data on all other hard drives risk data corruption or loss if this condition is not met. Some system resources that are required by the recovery process could be in use. It is advisable to initialize your system to default configuration prior to starting the recovery process. To accomplish this, power off your system and then power it up again. Hold F1 to enter the BIOS configuration panels and initialize your system.
